Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

To start, I want to say this is my very first UA-cam comment ever. The reason I’m commenting is because this gentleman and scholar not only seems to be very well educated and informed on a Stihl chainsaw, but he also is a master at making an informative and easy to understand video on how repair something. I’ve actually watched several of your videos of you repairing a few different things and I just wanted to say THANK YOU SIR for taking the time to make these AWESOME videos for us to learn and maybe even make a video ourselves one day showing our skills. Again, this is my first UA-cam comment EVER!! You deserved my comment and I give you an A+ on your videos. Please keep em coming and never stop!
In general there are two or three types of "you tube comments" with many are not accomplished mechanics and pose difficulties due to smooth fluid use of words and writing but for the mechanic it is how to do it · 15 Pages of "Warnings" all of which are correctly worded but not once did I ever see "clean the spark arrest" and now with great effort found that is what the problem was … I get accused of poor wording posting style so the thing here is these machines are not "Wordsmiths" they are inanimate … developing efficient machinery ability is decades of work and being naturally interested
Thanks for the quick overview. My Stihl has been sitting for years and I was a little intimidated to give it an overhaul.
Cheers!
really clear and easy to understand video thanks for your help!
I was confused from other descriptions about clutch removed especially the vague reference to rope. Very good straight forward how_to on removing the cluch. Thanks
Excellent clutch removal technique. Its what i was looking for.
The tip about the oiler worm gear lining up with the notch is so valuable a bit o knowledge. I've watched other videos where they didn't know that,,, then had to retear down machine when no oil circulation. Good video.
Wow! Amazing video! Thank you for slowing down and showing the details one needs to know to do it correctly. God bless you sir
thanks for taking the time to make this video ! real informative. I have read if you run the chain saw over some clean cardboard, you should see some oil drips, which indicates the oiler is flowing free.
great advice dude , saving me a fortune in maintenance costs. Many thanks..
A great video, informative, easy to follow, even for non-mechanics.
Thank you once again I have been trying all day to take a part off I am glad that you showed us the trick with the rope
A skinned knuckle and some pinched skin later, I wish I'd seen this video sooner. Thanks for the share.
Thanks buddy. You helped me get my buddy saw running
Great video, clear concise and very helpful
Thanks so much for your clarity and focus upon what's important instead of hitting us with a barrage of time-consuming chatter. You would be perfect as an instructor for students studying to do maintenance on these machines. I'm going to confess to my own stupidity and thank you for calling it to my attention. I'm pretty sure, after watching this video, that I neglected to line up the notch with the wire when I replaced my clutch drum. Duhhhhh. I'll know for sure in the morning. Just in case, I've watched your other videos on oil feed issues just in case it's something else.
Thanks well done you always do a great job of explaining
no problem, i'm getting my garage roof done this month
donyboy73 This is a great video! Thanks so much for posting this on UA-cam. Now I'm able to replace my clutch! Again thanks so much!
I repaired chainsaw thanks to your video i thought it was seized excellent instruction. Wally Australia
Thanks for making this video very HELPFUL and educational 👍🏼👍🏼
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO. IT HELP ME TO REPLACE THE CLUTH ON MY "STHIL MS310".
THANK YOU.
Thank you. I have the same chain saw, very usefull video :)
Clear and concise video.
Myu MS 180 is different though. The chain is held on by two nuts.
Awesome. great vid. Now have my oil pump working again. Thanx a million :)
Great channel, very informative, thank's
Very thorough and nice video.
Simply good!
Dony. Great Video. Thank you..
Thanks, just what I needed.
Thanks for your quick response...
You are the best, thank you so much.
@Archie7878 yes a piston stop or nylon rope works for me. if the roller bearing needs to be replaced the clutch drum will be loose
many thanks for your guidance all peoples
Great video. Although on mine the brake plastic cover and the brake itself needed removing also.
well explained thanks
Thank you, so much for essential information.
Thank you very much. Done and fixed.
Thanks you very much it’s help me a lot.
This has helped a lot.... thank so much
Excellent video.
yes the band goes over the clutch drum, it is not recommended to install it without the brake handle
nice work don
Good info thanks
Thanks great video.
Great videos - you really helped with a complete cylinder/piston rebuild. I have a question about the clutch on my MS180C - when I took everything apart I'm not sure if I have a part that should be included in the clutch assembly. Its a concave washer - not the big washer that says top. It seems to go on top of the worm drive just beneath the large washer. When I put everything together I can still attach all the parts of the clutch and clip the circlip. Allows for 0 play. Is this OK?
Thanks!
Good explanation thanks
Good job Don, thanks and cheers from Bracebridge 😊
Hi Dave
Thank you!
thank you for your great videos ...
I picked up a 180 from eBay and while it oiled it did not do so to my standards, so I replaced it. When I got it out it had goober coming out the shift, so I replaced the oil line and cleaned the tank too. It is best too insert the new oil line in the tank, first. I also replaced the worm gear and cleaned up the clutch side. It worked when I got it from the seller but it left a lot to be desired. Now, it works great but I have replaced a lot of things on it and repaired other things. It is not brand new but it thinks it is.
Loving the rope trick. Not seen that berore.
I have a stihl saw that needs a clutch. Now I know how to do it. Thank you.

THANK YOU !!!!!!
Hello great video!!!! I recently purchased a 056 super and want to replace the rim sprocket, but don't want to break anything doing the job incorrectly. Do I just pull the spark plug and use either a piston stop or piece of nylon rope to keep the clutch tight and turn my clutch nut clock wise to remove it???? I am guessing it is similar to your video, but want to make sure. Also if I need to replace the roller bearing what am I looking for or listening for as I run the saw???
A clutch spring went on my Stihl 024AVS. I mighta ran the saw this way for several cuts. Upon clutch removal, I noticed the outer diameter had a slight lip. This is clearly not normal, right? I'm assuming since a spring went (1 of the 3) it put unequal pressure on the 3 shoes, causing the lip. This could cause slippage right?
thanks dude
Don I got a question? why on some replacement Oregon Replacement bars are there no oil holes ? How can they work?
Thanks you bro..,👍
This is exactly the same chainsaw I have, but mine is 180c. I have replaced old fuel and air filter, i have cleaned carburetor just like you said, and now it works like new one. But now the chail oiler doesn't work, so I have to fix it. Thanks a lot!
@Mueiwark i saw SAIL 2000 in Amsterdam, i was there 2 weeks
I always remember what ways the parts come off and go back on messing with small engines is like a puzzle to me
Wonderful. Thank you so much for this instruction!
i have to say thank you ..i let the belt loose for about 5 minutes and it now has loosen up a great deal.. bu i would like you to know i am greatfull. if you ever have a roofing or building question i would be glad to oblige you monamie.. i hope i spelled it close enough.. thanks...
thanks man
they are pretty equal in terms of quality, Stihl dealers are more prevalent here so i get to work on stihls more often
Nice info
question: i broke one piece of the flywheel do you think i need to replace it? thanks.
As usual another precise great video. I however have another problem. My chainsaw is a MS 180 C, with not many hrs on it. I was looking at my chain brake bc it wasn’t working properly. Thinking it was going to be a simple fix. After closer inspection it seems it was not properly used and either left engaged or being engaged while still at a higher rpm. Either way the result is the plastic housing being damaged from the heat. After watching a few of your videos, I was finally able to get the clutch drum off and then pieces/parts of the roller bearing came apart, mostly the pins on the roller bearing. Unfortunately, the springs to the clutch were also off. I was finally able to get the chain brake off, prying it gently from the melted housing. Can the Springs be put back on the clutch assembly? I would imagine the Oiler worm gear is prob damaged.
While I did purchase this saw new, I did let someone borrow it and he took it to “his guy” to replace a chain and also “tune it up”. I do not know how in depth “his guy” took apart the saw.
However his tune up made it run worse, especially idling. I was able to tear down the carburetor and got it running back properly. I am also properly guilty of not keeping it as clean as I should have. Being this. What is the proper way to clean the housing & clutch assembly? I heard brake cleaner or carb cleaner. Will it hurt if it gets in/on the oiler? I was going to take some very fine sand paper & clean up/smooth out where the chain brake goes. Is this chainsaw worth fixing or should I get another and keep/sell it for parts? Can you also provide the replacement part info for the following parts & anything else you think I may need:
1. Chain Brake
2. Roller Bearing
3. Possibly Clutch
4. Possibly Oiler Worm Gear
Is it ok to buy from Amazon or other 3rd party or should I get the parts directly from Stihl? I can provide any pics that may be useful as well as my email/other.
Thanks in advance
gracias por el video, saludos desde México.
De nada
HI i have a question, does the chain brake band go over the clutch drum? And is it possible to reinstall the clutch drum even if the chain brake (plastic) lever is off?
Ver para creer que capooo👍👍👍👍👍
Have you done an engine replacement video for MS180C?
awesome trick with the rope in the cylinder...
my cord got stuck ,any idea
I had problem with my MS170 today, The clutch cover is hung tight as can be, I did get it to turn some , But I stopped short of getting it off, I wanted to check here first before going farther with it, But I see I was doing what i needed to do in order to get it off. I'll need new clutch and cover You think?? Or get it off clean it good if no damage , Put it back on if its free? Appreciate the Help & Video!!
Hi I have ms440 macnum & the chain won’t stop I clean everything and they still don’t stop which piece I have to replace it thank you
☺thanks👍
make sure the coil isn't rubbing on the flywheel
yes
Wow this is great. My MS251 saw smoked up and now the center shaft spins but the gear that turns the chain does not. I am trying to figure out what is wrong. At first the break was stuck but now that is clicking properly it seems. I'm hoping that it won't be too expensive of a repair at the dealer. This video gave me some hope but I'm still not positive why the chain won't turn. If you have any ideas I would be grateful to hear what you think I did to it? I won't be able to go to the dealer till Monday. Your video is great. Thank You for sharing!!!
When you add the rope make sure you don't push into the exit hole 👍
@rookie0674 unfortunately the ms180 is only self oiling and no adjuster
Excelente explicação
gracias
I would agree with the comments below with one exception. I followed everything you said but now I cannot get the rope out of the spark plug hole. Do you have a video on that? Or do I now have a $200 paper weight?
another great video - since the Carb is such a common issue - how about a video on how to replace the carb on the 180, Thanks
@pulsar46 thanks for the tip
watch my new video on how to replace the sprocket on this saw here;
ua-cam.com/video/OHXD3Zfdyx4/v-deo.html
Done how do you relace a clutch on a ht131 pole saw
Thx for the disassembly. I used an impact to remove the clutch. But I know many people don't have that.
I have a MS250 with an engine stop/ kickback brake . I had a lot of trouble trying to get the hub back over the clutch because the brake was engaged which makes the brake band tighter. Be sure your brake is not engaged.
Do you grease your roller bearing sleeve?
Hi,
I watched a few of your videos last night and today. Very straight forward, very well done.
Silly questions, but do you rebuild the clutch or simply replace the part? thank you, dwc
the clutch is serviceable
Is there a way to inspect a clutch and tell if it's worn? My saw clutch occasionally slips when cutting tough wood, but I disassembled clutch and don't know how to tell if it's worn and needs to be replaced. It's not like my car clutch with an organic material. The clutch seems to be all metal. Maybe you could make a video on how to inspect a clutch and know if it should be replaced? Thanks for your great videos!
super
I LOVE your videos!!! I sure could benefit from a video showing how to do all the work to replace the oil pump... Is it similar to the MS250 video?
It's basically the same oil pump system tbh. Except the 170 & 180 don't have an elbow connector and separate oil line like the 250. 170-180 has a removable oil tank (don't need to remove it), one oil line that acts like the elbow on the 250. Donyboy has a 170-180 oil line replacement video. I also think Donyboy has one for the 250 oil pump, so does Taryl Fixes All (he replaces the entire system). It's just a long M5 threaded screw to pull the pump.
Well what kind of roof is it? Maybe I can help you pick a better material. I'm just glad for your help. And you make good videos. You take the pain and cost out of the learning curve.
can you do a clutch removal and installation on a cs 3450 echo chain saw? thanks
Thanks...
One question,
Is it critical to have that clutch drum lined up with the worm gear wire underneath the clutch in order for the oiler to perform efficiently???
yes
I have a MS290 - Is there a trick to getting the clutch to lift off?
just getting shingles installed, mine are finished, they will be fiberglass shingles, can't afford metal at this time
