Hey thanks! Depends on what you're growing. If growing fast crops like lettuce & spinach, when harvesting you'd pull the root out and leave the coco and just top up with a bit more coco.... We'd recommend doing this a max of 3-4 times with the original coco before replacing. For larger crops like capsicum, kale etc, the root system will completely take over the planter so there won't be much coco left to salvage. But yes, coco can be re-used. It's worth flushing with water between plantings...
G'day, coco/perlite is a wick, so it actually only needs one drip point at the top of the tower for all sections to be adequately hydrated :-) Coco is awesome stuff
You want to replace the water every 1-2 weeks. You can top up in the meantime, but yes you want to replace the water as the build up of salts increases the ph which is not good for plant growth. always remember, that healthy water = healthy plants. A 60 L tank every couple weeks is not a big deal....
Just got this and have done a dry run by assembling it sans water or plants Looks good and seems sturdy Question regarding flushing the system. You can drain the water using the plug hole at the bottom. But, how do you refill the reservoir when you’ve got 20 plants stacked on top?
Thanks Gaurav for the feedback and glad you like it. To refill it there are holes at the top of the reservoir. Simply run a hose or fill with a watering can. No need to dismantle the system to refill! Make sure you get it in full sun for best results.... happy growing :-)
In hydroponics, clean water is healthy water. The mineral salts from the nutrient build up over time and so do various bacteria such as algae etc. Flushing the system is really easy. There's a plug at the base of the unit. It's fitted with a standard 13mm hose inlet so you can connect it to any garden hose to drain it if on a balcony or indoors.
G'day, there is a solar option available here www.mrstacky.com.au/vertical-gardens/hydroponic-smart-farm-20/?attribute_pa_colour=stone&attribute_pa_configuration=solar-powered To refill the tank after draining, simply use a hose or watering can at the top of the reservoir there are holes :-)
Hi, we use a pump with head height 2 meters and flow rate 2000 liters p/hour. The unit stands 1.5 meters high so you can add 2 more stacks (7 stacks total) with existing pump if desired
I used hydroton in my setup because I was afraid that the coconut peat and the perlite might ruin the pump or clog the dripper head. Should I stop worrying about that and go ahead and use the coco and perlite?
Yes! Once the coco/perlite settles in, none will fall through, and even if some does initially, there's no mesh inside the tubing so it just gets carried up to top and dispersed. The coco/perlite wicks the water to all parts of the tower as opposed to clay balls which don't wick so you need to ensure constant water is supplied.... :-) If you're really worried about it, we have mesh bags that go around the pump, they're about $5 or something
@@mrstackyaustralia I have it on-off in 15 min intervals with the clay pebbles but if I do it with the coco-perlite mix, how often should I water the tower and for how long?
@@TarponChamp All it truly needs is about 3 min per day in 1 minute intervals (morning, noon, night), however the beauty with coco is you can't really over water it. It holds 22% air even when fully saturated. Water flowing in the system is healthy so run it 15 min on / 45 min off during the day (about 4-6 hours on total p/day).
No, every 2 weeks is standard for most hydro recirculating systems. Some will flush and replace weekly but when plants are full grown they'll suck up a good 50 litres of water in a week anyway!
Just installed our Mr Stacky and a little confused with how long to water. Do you run it for 15 mins per hour, so off for 45mins over a 6 hour period in winter months?? so this would total 1 and half hours of watering per day.? Is it normal for it to just drip slowly or should the water be flowing fast or freely?
Hi, thx for the query. So technically, the system only needs about 2 to 3 minutes on p/day. Just enough to wet the coco which then wicks to each planter. However, water recirculating through the system is healthy as it adds oxygen. Also, because the coco holds so much oxygen even when fully saturated, you can have water flowing often. So, we recommend a 15 min on / 45 min off cycle during the day then off at night. The water should be flowing freely out of each of the 4 outlet valves. If it's not, then with the pump running, unscrew the top 4 outlet manifold and then screw it back on. This should dislodge any coco.....
Hi there, yes you can use vermiculite instead, would just need 4 extra drip lines on top tier to water the 2nd tier, and you'd want the system running for approx 8-12 hours each day. You not a fan of coco/perlite for any particular reason?
No I am just having trouble finding the coco peat to mix with the perlite. I wanted to try and get these all set up so my classes could start planting but I may just have to order and wait for it to get delivered. I have a big bag of perlite but none of my local greenhouse suppliers have the coco
We recommend about 4-6 hours on p/day in 15 min min intervals. Water circulating keeps things healthy. Technically though all it really needs is 3 x 1 min feeds p/day to keep the tower hydrated.
Hi there, you can purchase here www.mrstacky.com.au/vertical-gardens/hydroponic-smart-farm-20/ but shipping to India will be quite expensive! Sorry :-)
Yes, but I would recommend using an air filter in the reservoir and cutting back the feeding program significantly from 4 hours on p/day down to 1 minute or so (just enough to keep tower hydrated) as soil can become too wet and cause root rot. The air pump in reservoir is needed to keep the water oxygenated with less water moving....
hey, pretty much anything will grow in this method. (Even tubours like potato and beetroot).... The planters are large enough to sustain large plants like tomatoes and cucumber. Most people grow fast cropping plants like lettuce, spinach, herbs etc.... :-)

With this system the reservoir maintenance can be rather inconvenient. Just to name a few, how do you measure and maintain the optimal PH level with limited access to the nutrient? 60L of nutrients won't last very long on hot summer days. every time you top up the water PH level will drift.
Great video. How long does the coconut coir last until needs replacing?

Wait... once you drain it, how do you refill it?! Lifting all those pots off first?!
How does the second pot get water? When the top pot get water the lobes ( plant area) overhangs to the third pot skipping out the second pot.
G'day, coco/perlite is a wick, so it actually only needs one drip point at the top of the tower for all sections to be adequately hydrated :-) Coco is awesome stuff
This is nice ..I would think that the first step is to know where you want to place it ..water is heavy to move ...does it come with wheels ????
Hey thanks and yes we have optional heavy duty trolley's that are rated to over 120kg! www.mrstacky.com.au/vertical-gardens/pot-trolly/
looks great for an herb guardian. just need to know wear to get one (or more)
