Sierra RS500 in stock form is gabage compared to the Escort. The turbo on the RS500 is way too big. It takes ages for it to kick in, and the Sierra 2wd chassis will never be good for handling.
One big difference between these cars is affordability. The Escort was a very expensive car in its day ~£24K which translates to about £45K at least now. The Focus RS seems to be exceptional value really
Part of what made the Cosworth so desirable was its exclusivity. Ford needs to be careful not to make too many Focus RSs and go after global sales volume like VW for instance, as that will kill its desirability and long term value.
Hi Henry, Nice review as ever, but just FYI the bag in the boot was not for the intercooler per se, but the car needed to come with the ability to run water injection for the gravel rally stages (where the car would spend a lot of time sideways, so not getting sufficient airflow across the air to air part of the charge / intercooler),, so it came with a jet in the cold side of the intercooler and the bag in the boot (with just some headlight / screen washer pumps) was supposed to be for water supply, so that the rally car could be configured for WI with only minor hardware changes (as was the homologation rule requirements of the day that the rally cars could only have what the road cars had).
One day when I was a kid. I heard a loud vacuum sound. I look up and I saw a big blue car. Then i looked back at it. And saw the giant wing. That’s when I feel in love with the Cosworth
Once I've driven an Escort Cossy and still miss it. It was just for 6 months, because it costs too much, but I loved it and it was worth the fun. What a beautiful car. I'm still dreaming of it some nights ;-)
Escort Cosworth in a heart beat.. the Mk3 RS is a capable car, but it misses the RS mark by quite a distance.. It’s missing the aggressive RS looks that the marque demands.. Wide arches, big wings, 2 doors..
Nice comparison and Henry is always good at conveying his experience :) I love my Mk3 RS and even the criticism of the sometimes bouncy ride can be addressed by the fitment of aftermarket progressive springs to give even better handling and ride :)
My first time seeing a ford escort was on NFS prostreet, thought it looked bland at first but then I started learning about, drove it in game, now I know why this thing is dope
I absolutely love mine, that rear driven feel is always there and as said in the video it's so easily adjustable on the way out with just a hint of oversteer or a whole load more if you want it. No other current hot hatch has that involving feel! Bravo Ford 👍👍👍
Great vid, great Henry, too. @Carfection, Are you also preparing a video of the new RS5? That would be the last of the competing bunch (C63/M4/Guilia QV) that you have not covered yet.
I wanted a Escort Cossie when it first came out but wasn't making enough to afford one when the stopped making them and evening secondhand prices were high. Now I am 50 years old still want one and secondhand immaculate ones are rare and demanding big money ahhh well.
Had an RS Sierra Cosworth 3 door then A RS Cosworth sapphire Then 3 door RS 500 Cosworth great cars in their day. Drove a couple of Escort RS Cosworth's Got my arse in a mountune Focus, different beast. Made all the Cosworths feel like dinosaurs. No need for nostalgia especially with the prices cosworths are fetching, madness! Easy to say i'd rather one over the other when you have driven neither!
Legend car. Would have a large turbo variant in imperial blue though. Closest I got was a 4x4 Saph Cos in Moonstone Blue. Had both Mk 1 and 2 Focus RS's as well. Not a Mk3 though yet!!!
Ford messed up with the Focus...5 doors? wtf! its so it can be made out of a standard one so its cheaper for them....Its a shame really, back in the 80/90's when a car was a sports version you could tell instantly when compaired to a standard version.....All cars look the same now, dull and boring!
It really winds me up that the only way to get a Ford without rear doors now is to buy a Fiesta or a Mustang. Even the likes of Renault Clios all come with 5 doors. What is wrong with people? When did aesthetics become so unimportant?
I drive a focus ST and the subtle styling is my favorite thing. I pass a cop and they just see a regular commuter car. Then i turn on the back roads and i can unleash the ridiculous torque super quick steering and drive like a freaking hooligan haha!
if you want a 2 door go buy an actual sports car. So confused by you Europeans prattling on about "hot hatch practicality" and then bemoaning the fact that the newest RS is a four door - aka a practical car!
I really wish Ford would've allowed Cosworth to develop the engine. Probably wouldn't have made any difference in performance, but it would allow Ford to slap a Cosworth badge on it.
well i own the black version shown here with upgraded recaro rally bucket seats which I intend to bring with me in the hearse! and i beg to differ with the majority, I wouldent swap it for the cosworth or any other, including fiesta st for that matter which I also had! I love my black rs!
I would of thought the Ford SVE car would not of had the non OE Max Power 'down grades' fitted. The gear knob and steering wheel are awful. Would of been a lot cooler in OE spec. I would say there are better cars around.
25 years on, and with all the advanced technologies the focus 'should' drive and feel better on the road than the Escort. Plus it's got 100+ more bhp. BUT it's fu*king ugly compared to the Escort. Not to mention the deprecation.
I'm a huge fan of the Escort Cosworth and always will be but, I have to be honest, I don't think that banana milkshake yellow colour suits it at all. Just my opinion :)
The Ford Escort RS Cosworth ALL DAY, EVERY DAY... until the end of time. There literally is no comparison!!!
The Cosworth was a homologation car. Something that doesn't happen nowadays and makes the Cosworth so much cooler.
storck08 exactly
storck08 homologation ? A 22b isn't homologated so can't be important ,I mean who cares about it ??
I don't care which channel Catchpole is on. I see Henry I hit like
Escort Cosworth is a best car product of Ford
second to sierra rs500
Sierra RS500 in stock form is gabage compared to the Escort. The turbo on the RS500 is way too big. It takes ages for it to kick in, and the Sierra 2wd chassis will never be good for handling.
its funny bc we dont get them in america :)))
The RS200 is best fight me
@@jOoomOooo you missed out on one of Ford's greatest cars, The Greatest being the RS1600 mk1 escort....unfortunately.
The Escort Cossie is my all time favourite Ford.
It still looks fantastic after 25 years.
You need to add Henrys name in the titles, I almost didn't watch - But would have instantly if I saw him mentioned.
One big difference between these cars is affordability. The Escort was a very expensive car in its day ~£24K which translates to about £45K at least now. The Focus RS seems to be exceptional value really
This hit right in the feels, sir! Great techy info, sleek camera work and nice transitions made it a repeatable gem. Keep em coming!
My uncle, John Wheeler (chief engineer) was involved with the Cosworth RS rally car and the Focus RS (the real souped up one)!
The Cosworth is way cooler.
Glad to see Henry back, missed him when EVO stopped doing reports for some reason.
Part of what made the Cosworth so desirable was its exclusivity. Ford needs to be careful not to make too many Focus RSs and go after global sales volume like VW for instance, as that will kill its desirability and long term value.
Ford don't care about value later on.. once it's out the door sold thay are happy...
Gotta pick the Cossie.
Glad to see the UA-cam return of Mr Catchpole. Great presenting as ever.
Love the Escort RS Cosworth (not in yellow as much ) .
Love my Focus RS.
2 great cars from different eras . You simple can not compare them.
Hi Henry,

Since when is Henry with Carfection?
kingphiltheill was just thinking exactly that.
He was recently made redundant by Drivetribes so he's doing freelance work now I believe.
Since Alex left.
Subi_fan Last thing I knew he was with Drive Tribe. How Come?
Hes a freelancer
One day when I was a kid. I heard a loud vacuum sound. I look up and I saw a big blue car. Then i looked back at it. And saw the giant wing. That’s when I feel in love with the Cosworth
'good to drive' a Ford tradition thats why I have always liked their small cars
RS cosworth all day long, the new car won't make 25yrs old because simply computers don't live that long!
>Implying The Escort doesn't have any computers
25 years ago that same statement would have been made comparing, say, a mk1 RS1600 to the Escort Cosworth! 90s cars had plenty of electronics.
Nonsense. My 1985 Porsche 944 has an ECU, and is perfectly reliable.
The old centre-mounted gauges of the Cosworth are more pleasing aesthetically than the newer RS which seems like an aftermarket Amazon purchase.
The world is a better place when Henry reviews an oldtimer.
Focus RS, I will own you in a few years. I Promise.
VXR_Nathan highly recommend one man 👌
Me too, seems to be best performance for money in the class and it looks great!
manufaktur Its a piece of shit Ford. The block goes shit and coolant gets into the cylinder and the car brakes down at 10000miles.
VXR_Nathan me too
Rich Piana's Oil Distribution Manager 13,000 miles on mine and still a beast. Don't hate papas
Good to see you here Henry...😊👍
No mention that the Escort Cosworth was on a shortened Sierra platform and built by Karmann.
Brilliant video with I think great narration and style which Henry has in spades. Keep up the great work.
Henry's voice = Like

When he cuts to describe the driving style @3:56, it sounds like poetry.
This reviewer is fantastic. Hope to see more from him.
Oh the orange peal on the back of that focus.
My first time seeing a ford escort was on NFS prostreet, thought it looked bland at first but then I started learning about, drove it in game, now I know why this thing is dope

This guy knows how to do a review. Great production of the video too.
Brilliant video! And great to see Henry in front of the camera ;)
That orange peel paint on the focus
Why didn't we get this performance gem, back in '93? Europe always had the fun stuff...😟
Great vid, great Henry, too. @Carfection, Are you also preparing a video of the new RS5? That would be the last of the competing bunch (C63/M4/Guilia QV) that you have not covered yet.
Really well put together video, I rather enjoyed that!
Wow wow wow! Poaching Evo! Nice! More of this guy and Alex please!
Great review on my next dream car. Thank you Ford engineers for keeping the passion for this great car through the years.
7:10 you can see the Escort in the reflection of the Focus. Camera operator must have been sitting in it.
@Carfection i want a video like this about the E39 M5 !!!
I wanted a Escort Cossie when it first came out but wasn't making enough to afford one when the stopped making them and evening secondhand prices were high. Now I am 50 years old still want one and secondhand immaculate ones are rare and demanding big money ahhh well.
really good review nicely done mate!!
Fabulous review. Henry has real charm and can drive.
It was actually build on a shortend Sierra Platform and it was build by Karmann.
You are wrong about the color, it is zinc yellow and there are few of them
I like it how this car has a longitudinally mounted engine rather than the normal transverse.
It's based on a Sierra floor pan. A car was made when longitudinal was normal:)
Had an RS Sierra Cosworth 3 door then A RS Cosworth sapphire Then 3 door RS 500 Cosworth great cars in their day. Could have cleaned the alloys for the beauty closeups lol. Nice balanced comparison though, love both cars.
Is that a Williams Grand Prix Engineering logo on the steering wheel? Was there a link?
Legend car. Would have a large turbo variant in imperial blue though. Closest I got was a 4x4 Saph Cos in Moonstone Blue. Had both Mk 1 and 2 Focus RS's as well. Not a Mk3 though yet!!!
Manual gearbox is the way to go.
I love these old v new Henry Catchpole reviews. Mclaren p1 v f1 was awesome, this too. Top Gear needs to sign him up to work with Chris Harris

totally agree, especially with hot hatches look at the golf r,cant tell the difference from a gtd model lol

@@dungareesareforfools its because people like to pop out sprogs on a daily basis... and want something "family centric" fuck that. fuck families..

Very good video!
he looks like Wolverine played the role of spiderman and then got old...
kinda good though...hehehe
I know its not true to the original but I really wish they'd kept the Volvo 5pot, what a glorious sound..
Whats this prat's problem with the sound of the YB seriously, how can you not like that sound
And i wish he would take the cossie closer to the redline so we can properly hear the YB
Great review 👍🏾
Williams on the steering wheel, Williams Renault was of the period, very successful too.
I really wish Ford would've allowed Cosworth to develop the engine. Probably wouldn't have made any difference in performance, but it would allow Ford to slap a Cosworth badge on it.

Lovely. What a treat. Thank you.
Nice comparison thanks.
The kind of video you first click "like" for and then watch.
With cable operation on the focus, the gearbox will never have anywhere near the feel of the Escort RS Cosworth's.
Henry is my favourite care reviewer!
That escort fords best moment .... Sierra was a legend too
isn't Henry from drivetrbe??
they got rid of him
Sam Lee he was at evo back in the day.
Sam Lee ay up Sammy..you still at Bolton ??.. no Harry potter want this geeza bsck
Yes but he made his name with evo
Nice vid 👍👍
7145 Escort's produced in total vs mass production basically says it all.
Cool outro
25 years on, and with all the advanced technologies the focus 'should' drive and feel better on the road than the Escort. Plus it's got 100+ more bhp. BUT it's fu*king ugly compared to the Escort. Not to mention the deprecation.
Michael Catalina What depreciation ?
K9 JSB I went into a dealer recently they had 5 outside !! Selling well are they? Time will tell......
So you're claiming depreciation when in reality you're preempting it
They sold 2 in just 10 minutes? Thats incredible!
K9 JSB I originally said, not to mention the depreciation. So why are you mentioning it?
i wish my Cosworth 190E came with a turbo, or all wheel.
Hold on so the Cosworth RS is not now the Focus RS?? Relax guys I'm not from the U.K I'm from the states we didnt have the Cosworth RS.
So am I and I'm kinda pissed that we don't have it..... we also don't have to 2010 Focus RS..... In fact we don't get any good cars
@@_cam- Now Ford will stop selling them smh
the throttle felt heavy in a lot of ford performance cars back in the early 90s. my 89 tbird sc has a heavy throttle.
Is this the bloke from big cook little cook
I like this fella. Looks like the Guy Martin of cars haha
the old one still looks good today,
the new ones look like they're designed in the tastelles '80s
Still rather have the Escort Cossie.
Don’t be silly the escort cosworth feels like a double decker bus compared to the focus rs
Brilliant. Loved that .👍
Sorry, but there is also an original Zinc Yellow in Holland!
Good video
If I could only get one here in the states. I'd put my hard earned cash into one for sure
7:25 That needs to be a new dance
nice ,, looking at the camera while street driving , at speed
I'm a huge fan of the Escort Cosworth and always will be but, I have to be honest, I don't think that banana milkshake yellow colour suits it at all. Just my opinion :)
Very nice, amazing motor!
Henry, what are you doing here?!
the guy in this looks like my old driving instructor
I wish I had them both
Where's Alex?
Peter Sarwan another channel
Escort Cossa!!! Memories!!!
