I don’t think it’s fair to attract the audience with a performance of Jonas Kaufmann from at least 15 years ago and who won’t sing in that return on stage at the ROH. It’s also not fair for the other singers who will take the part of Cavaradossi.

"Recondita" doesn't mean "subtle", it could be better translated "hidden"

True, and it still doesn't quite convey the full meaning. In fact it would be best to just use "recondite", as this word exists in English, alongside many other Latin calques. I would say it is quite impossible to translate word-to-word otherwise. The closest I can think of in this context would be "inscrutable and somewhat elusive in nature".

He artificially darkens his voice, which makes the singing very unnatural. Also his high notes lack power and squillo. If you want a better rendition of this aria, then should listen to Franco Corelli or Salvatore Fisichella.
