    I believe Chris Degarmo (Lead Guitar) did many of the high vocal back up tracks. He did them live as well.

      Yep, Tate's natural voice is a mid level baritone that can be pushed fairly high, but Degarmo's voice is softer and higher.

    Eddie Jackson is one of the most underrated bassists in metal much less in general. His Spector NS-2 with EMGs sound set the tone for heavy rock ever since.

    • @donaldwrissler9059
      @donaldwrissler9059 3 роки тому +1

      Don't forget his background vocals too. Many Ryche songs would not be what they are without his harmonies in the low/mids and then Chris's high harmonies. I always lusted after a Spector and never could afford one BITD, but then it would have been wasted on a guitar player.:)

    • @lockstar169
      @lockstar169 3 роки тому

      Chris DeGarmo has called what Eddie does as "Ed World". Spector through an Ampeg. You can't lose with that combo. Rivals early Geddy Lee or Gene Simmons for tone \m/

      @rogerj7327 3 роки тому

      Back in the day, I would've sold my soul to have his bass sound. I actually contacted Spector to see how much it would cost to build me a left-handed version of his bass,, and (if I remember correctly) the quote was close to $6,000.

    Such a great track and amazing album, start to finish. Really Geoff Tate, Chris DeGarmo & Michael Wilton at the peak of composition as a band. While i love Empire, the feel of this album just never gets old and is the one i go back to the most often. Chris doesn't get enough credit for his vocal harmonies with Geoff, especially live. My college roommate and I had the deal on this one that I'd buy it on vinyl, since it was available first at Tower Records and then he bought the CD a few days later, just so we didn't have to wait to hear it. Such a hard album to pick one track from with it being such a great concept with most tracks leading into the next. I guess I'll have to listen to it again on my drive home tonight! :) A favorite deep track off the QR EP is The Prophecy, if you are looking for other QR down the road - ua-cam.com/video/AxVmkmNcAi4/v-deo.html Thanks very much for the reaction!

      Let's talk about how prophetic this album was. As I told my nephew this month, this band described the intersection of fake news, cult of personality and anarcho-revolution driven by a generation lacking vision and turning to drugs and violence and demagoguery. They literally described our current state 30 years before it happened.

    The Wall.
    Operation: Mindcrime.
    Scenes From a Memory.
    and pretty much anything from Ayreon / Arjen Lucassen.
    These albums and their stories will always evoke memories of various decades of my life and my music progress. I've played guitar for 30 years. Lots of Gilmour and DeGarmo / Wilton in the early days, then Petrucci and the limits of my fingers after that. Through Dream Theater side projects, I found Arjen, who inspired me to buy a Hammond and a Moog to squabble / twiddle on. Always been a fan of prog and albums that tell stories. These are the ones I've listened to on repeat for months at a time until I knew them forwards and backwards.
    I'll never forget learning the opening riff to this song. My nubby fingers did not like that 5 fret stretch. 30 years later, ehhh... it's still a stretch.

    Saw them for the first time as an opening acf for Metallica. We all sat there with our jaws open when Geoff Tate started singing. One of the best bands I've ever seen live!!!! For REAL!!!

    This was needed when it came out haha. I like The Mission" and Suite Sister Mary" the best probably. They used to have videos that looked like a movie they were doing soundtrack for, or maybe they thought like that when writing.

    First - love that you did some 'Ryche. Awesome band. Awesome album. Second - would love to see some Zappa but it doesn't surprise me that they block his vids. They won't even let Dweezil use the name.

    This album and Scenes From A Memory by Dream Theater are 1A and 1B for me in terms of concept albums that I became emotionally invested in. The skill it takes, the imagination it takes to create concept albums, especially those as great as this one, is mind blowing. 🤯

      Dream Theater isn’t even close to this band or three other Prog Metal bands. 1. Savatage, 2. Queensryche, 3. Fates Warning, 4. Marillion, 5. Dream Theater. Dream Theater had Pull me Under and that is it. They are no comparison to any of the bands I listed.

    ZZ Top’s La Grange would be an awesome throwback, if it’s possible. A lesson in how to write songs without a chorus with a fade out on a solo that may have gone on for hours.

    Great album! Check out the track Suite Sister Mary for something in less of a pop song format and more of a long-form progressive arrangement, complete with creepy choral chanting! Awwright!

      No, that would be Streets by Savatage, also a rock opera (The proper term for this type of undertaking). It is also by a Prog Metal band, but a slightly better one.

    Chris DeGarmo was the primary background vocalist of the band and was responsible for almost all the higher notes in their vocal harmonies. Just phenomenal vocals from top to bottom during that era.

    Ah yes Queensryche. Such a distinct voice... love these guys. And a great breakdown as always.
    A one to add to your suggestion list which is a bit diffierent to this... it would great to hear a breakdown of Magnificent (She Says) by Elbow. It is a lovely emotive, quite chill bit of music with some lovely strings you may enjoy.

    Eddie and Chris actually do most of the high harmonies. They both have very distinctive voices and can get really high, especially Eddie. I've seen them live MANY times. I'd give anything for a copy of the separated tracks of their songs.

    The comment you made about a well rehearsed solo made me think of Bob Rock busting Kirk Hammett in the studio about is very unremarkable solo on Unforgiven. It is HILARIOUS. As a guitar player, I about schitt when he said what he said. It was SO on the money. You will relate, as well. If you haven't seen it, it's definitely worth the 5 minutes.
