I practice Islam on a personal level but I do think any religion that becomes organised in state form can lead to repression and an abuse of power over basic human rights. This is fundamentally why a state MUST be secular. The Americans' withdrawal in Afghanistan has led to one of the most repressive steps backwards for women in that country. Limited education and prohibiting speaking outside together for instance. I saw the Afghan youth music orchestra in Birmingham and these kids were literally refugees from that regime because the Taliban banned music and no doubt the girls in this orchestra would be unable to play instruments if they they were still in their home country. Religion needs to be found on an individual level not thrust upon people. I went on a date with a Somali woman recently and she was estranged from her family because she could not wear modern clothes (just traditional dress) or listen to music at home. Furthermore, the Mother and Baby Homes Scandal saw many women become victims of forced labour for having children outside of marriage (the Magdelene Laundries being one of them - the basis of a new movie with Cillian Murphy). This policy was organised and institutionally run. The whole system was set up to keep thousands of birth mothers and their children apart.
What a ridiculous proposal. Can Cambridge do any debate that isnt concerned with identity politics and framed by Leftists. Religion is incompatible with a lot of things to different degrees depending on the cultural progression. In the UK, clearly Church of England is very compatible as much as it can be considering the antiquated texts its based upon. Islam not so much. Why does this deserve a debate. Probably to try and cover up this last point casting all religions the same.
5:58 “But couldn’t God have banned domestic violence or for that matter slavery, like he remembered to ban alcohol?!”
