I usually try to find some cons to go along with the pros.. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxnkYCgssg4ZO858cyBdD1JPEaUJ9Up1C_ but it really is a good knife. The blade sits centered in the handle when closed (photo added). It opens effortlessly. Unlocks and closes easily with one hand. It’s a great size for EDC. I wish this exact knife came in one of the premium steels to satisfy the knife snob in me.. but it’s a great tool at a great price as it is. Would buy again.
People will complain about anything, show them a scalpel and they will complain it cant pry open a car door. Show them a fire axe they will complain it sucks at slicing tomatos.
Probably one of the most professional videos I’ve seen about replaceable blades. I’ve used the gerber vital because of you and just found the folding version. It works fine but I always wanted to get my hands on the fixed blade version which they seem to have discontinued. I finally ordered one today. Than you for your advice and great video!
I've been using a outdoor edge razor blaze for several years now. Done whitetail, black bear and moose. I've never had any problem whatsoever with it. I wash it ever time I use it though. If I'm at home I take the blade off and run it through the dishwasher. In the bush I soak it in hot water for a few minutes. One thing I really like is, if I forget the replacement blades I can sharpen the blade that's on it easily. Nice video, thanks
I haven't used the other two but I have the outdoor edge razorblaze and the razor lite. Had the blaze for 3, maybe 4 years and the lite for a year. I have never had trouble with either knife. You do get a little fat in the blade area but I've never had trouble getting a blade out or cleaning it. Also never had a blade come loose when using. If you use it and take care of it and clean it when you are done you should have no trouble with it in my experience.
I just got back from a successful mountain goat hunt with a buddy who has a Razorlite. He has had the other two as well and the blades are so short that personally I didn’t care for them for elk and other big game. However, the Razorlite was just big enough to feel like a decent size knife and also had the hand feel to be used comfortably. The shape of the blade is decent but what impressed me the most was how friggin sharp this thing was the whole time we skinned and bone out the meat on his mtn goat. It made my professionally sharpened hunting knife look dull and worthless. We had no system failures at all with it. Excellent review! Pros and cons for everything and you mentioned them. Perfect.
I have the Gerber vital. I used it last year on both my antelope hunt and deer hunt. I was fortunate to harvest and fill both tags. That being said, I did have an issue with the blades releasing during the the field dressing method. (gutless). It happened during my antelope hunt on my own antelope and also with a camp friend who also harvested an antelope. On both animals half way through quartering them, the blade would release. I figured i would give it one more try during my late mule deer hunt in December. Again i had problems with the blade releasing. If you notice @ 10:40 in the video notice how the release stay depressed until he locks it back in. This is what the problem is. I will not be using this knife again. I also bought the blade dispenser/container. I really liked that. This is my personal experience with this folding knife and my opinion. Hope this helps.
I used the havalon and the outdoor edge and still use both. I use the outdoor edge for big game, mostly deer and moose, because it has more of a belly. I think it works better when skinning and when doing long cuts. I keep the havalon for bird, the skinny blade are really good to pull the breast out on grouse and ducks.
I've been carrying a Gerber EAB for everyday carry lately. For skinning, I like the Wyoming knives. First few hunts I had a conventional knife. Ended up having to sharpen it so much, I hated it. Started carrying the Wyoming Knives and several spare blades, a bone saw, and a small axe.
I’ve used one of those outdoor edge knives as an edc for a Blount a year now. It’s actually pretty good for that purpose, being able to replace the blade and all.
Bobby great review I have been using the Havalon Piranta and Barracuda for all my field dressing. The Piranta has the standard 60 XT blade and the Barracuda has the bone saw. They work great together and make field dressing quick and easy. As to the problem of the knives getting dunked up a trip through the dishwasher without the blade has worked wonders for me. I'm going to try the new gut hook blade this season as well. Thanks for the review.
I won the gerber vital foleder. First elk, the front blade retention tab broke in half. Gerber sent me another one and used it the next year on a deer and the same exact thing happened. Both times all i used it for was to cape the elk and deer. All the heavier cutting was done with a fixed blade. Figured the scalpel would work better for all the fine little stuff on the head, eyes, and nose. I submitted another claim recently. Was hoping they had mabe beefed up that fixed front tab, so its a little more robust than just the tiny pin that holds it on.
On the Gerber it appears to be a lot hardware to gunk up with crud between the handle and the blade. Reviewer said it was easy to clean up, but looks like a lot of nook and crannies.
its seems Gerber has addressed the concerns i have with the havalon with blade removal and installation. With the havalon i have to carry my leatherman to remove the blade safely which defeats the purpose of a lightweight knife.
I'm a first time hunter. I was looking for an entry level hunting knife at the Grand opening of a Canadian Tire. I was fortunate enough to have three different experienced hunters to advise me. I was told by one hunter with years of experience that he and all his hunting friends have been using the Razor Lite EDC for years. So far this is the only semi bad review I've seen...
awesome review. Before I saw this video i thought I was the only person having problems with my outdoor edge razor lite getting fat and gunk in the blade channel and causing the blade to get stuck. I ordered the havalon knife hoping to stop stuck blades. I saw the gerber one but after the junk bear grylls crap they have been making im sceptical.
I had them all the Gerber folder is the best in my opinion for a skinning boning knife. The blade removal is very easy and safe. You can buy 100 blades on amazon for around $30.
I've cleaned many game animals, never had a Razor lite edc blade accidentally come off. Never had a problem with the blade holder getting clogged either , gotta keep knife clean - but you should be keeping any knife clean
The channel in the Piranta handle is designed to be big enough to be able to get in there and wash all of the debris out with a hose/faucet/dental tool.
I do underground utilities working in mud, dirt, and sand every day and the outdoor edge razorlite is my edc and i have had no problems with the blade not locking in place but the tip of the blade will break if your not careful but hey just stick another blade in and keep going
Had the Gerber and it broke within a year and 3 uses. It will no longer hold the blade on. Just bought the outdoor edge. Much sturdier and has the zipper blade. Think it is going to hold up much better.
I just use the havalon. Basically because it works for what I need. I just know to let the knife do its job, and don't force it into cutting through joints etc. I have a fixed blade Falkniven F1 for the tougher cuts. And just throw it in the dish washer to get the gunk out. Might try the Piranta. But gear costs money, and I have other gear needs that are ahead of that for now.
Haven’t had a blade come loose on my razor lite yet, or any other failures 🤞🏻. Been using 2 yrs hunting and construction. granted I am left handed. Does get dirty but cleans nicely with hot water.
I bought an outdoor edge and the blades popped off right from the start. I been meaning to take it apart and see what the problem is with it. I suppose you can always have one that’s a dud when it comes to anything.
I wish I had watched this video before I bought a Razorlight EDCI used it to clean fish. I had to use a razor blade to clean out the ejector before I could replace the blade. A real bummer.
My outdoor edge lasted a season. The locking mechanism stopped working so the blade wont stay attached. I clean it ritually yet it still failed. Also collects way too much debre and rusted.
I used a friends Havalon only once to clean a pig. The blade came loose and I could have sliced my hand. Not sure if I was using it wrong or if it was my fault, but I would not buy one of those after having that experience. The Gerber is nice but I'd rather have full use of the blade. It covers half the blade basically, as you mentioned in your video. The outdoor edge looks nice, I will try one some day.
I used one on my recent moose hunt. After simply field dressing a single moose the blade was rolled over and dull. No I did not cut and bones. Just hide and soft tissue. Skinning the moose burnt up a whole second blade. It was also a pain to clean. I was not impressed. I'll stick with my buck 110 or carbon steel mora.
I jumped when you dropped the Havalon! I’ve used the Havalon for 4 seasons. Never broke a blade and they are cheap to replace! Every animal toss the blade
Very nice review. I'm looking at the Gerber Vital as a skinning knife primarily for small animals up to whitetail deer size. It looks like it should do very well for this work. Keeping each blade totally sterile isn't a huge concern for me as I can use wipes when needed. My work will be done at my skinning rack not in the woods so many things just are not a big concern. I do worry about a tendency to grip too high on the knife and come in contact with the blade. Some design improvement to reduce that possibility is needed, I think.
The 60A’s will fit on the Gerber Vital, but the are a TIGHT fit. They are difficult to seat the blade and difficult to remove. I wouldn’t recommend installing or removing them without pliers.
A couple things about these knives should go without saying: they do not make good pry bars and if you gut an animal with it you have to thoroughly clean and dry it.
Dude you praise havalon and fully expect everyone to carry around an extra set of pliers just to change the blade, but you wildly speculate the outdoor edge will be rendered useless if you happen to drop it without a blade installed?
Dude, did you watch the video? I praise the havalon? I have used these knives more in a single year than most hunters will in years. I say the havalon has a better locking mechanism, while the outdoor edge is the worst. This is based on all my usage.
WRONG INFO ON THE OUT DOOR EDGE KNIFE. THE HOLE IS NOT THE ONLY WAY THE BLADE IS HELD ON. NOTICE THE FRONT OF THE BLADE. The hole is the only way the blade is attached to the knife, the hook on the end does not keep the blade on, it only keeps it in place. If you cut the tab the hole is on off the blade it would not stay on the knife.
@@BoudreauxBoswell YEAH YOU'RE RIGHT. I'M JUST REPEATING WHAT OUT DOOR EDGE TOLD ME. For how thin these replaceable blades are the overall thickness of the handles is quite ridiculous. The weight is acceptable but there is no sensible reason for the all the rubber and thickness. I want to be able to edc these blades but I’m forced to use a Gerber eod? I think it is. The one with the utility blade you can swap out. Yeah, only that one because these things are too damn fat to fit in my Jean pocket.

Your comment of “they are all fine choices and well designed” shows your lack of experience with these knives. All of the issues I have with these are knives are first hand experience that I have had using hundreds of blades.

No, they take 60's only. Keep an eye out for a updated video soon going in more depth about blades

Outdoor edge doesn't hold edge longer while Havalon is great in that department.
nice vid, good tips!!!
that wont rust on if you oil it
No one uses the razor lite like that, it has jimping specifically so you don't have to hold it like that.
Another reviewer says that the piranta blades will work on the Gerber vital. Can you confirm that they will or will not work on it?
The 60A’s will fit on the Gerber Vital, but the are a TIGHT fit. They are difficult to seat the blade and difficult to remove. I wouldn’t recommend installing or removing them without pliers.
Great Video! Have you tried Tyto??
I suppose you could grind away at that Gerber to expose the blade more like you mentioned.
This is a good point, I might have to look into it. It might weaken it structurally though.
I did with a dremel and it works great!
A couple things about these knives should go without saying: they do not make good pry bars and if you gut an animal with it you have to thoroughly clean and dry it.
Great Video! Have you tried Tyto Knives?
I have not tried them yet.
Havalon makes a fixed model, cheap, simple and sterile. Plastic or SS...
Seems like the Gerber is a better version of the havolon
melvin sacromentoe j
So...none of them suck? Damn. I was hoping this would tell me which one not to buy...instead it makes me want all 3.
Don't buy outdoor edge! I think the Gerber is best, followed by Havalon
Great video. Thanks !
Seriously is anything made in America anymore??
Pairing/caping knives arent meant for prying either.
Havalon Evolve + gerber vital sharps container CHEERS
Will the havalon replacement blades work on the Gerber?
The 60A's will fit, but they are VERY tight. You probably won't be able to install them by hand. You will need some type of pliers to install them.
I'm sure he likes the last one but to me it's the most unsafe knife there.
Havalon uses standard scapel blades - cheap.
