Hey John , Nice touch mounted on the skull 😃👍 my first brick laying was in the BACK garden 😂on a bbq.. took my probably 10 times longer than a brick layer would .. it’s since been scrapped, but I learned a lot .. mainly leave it to the pros 😂 great video, cheers Rob
John, this brought good memories of my paternal grandfather. For the latter part of the war, he was the Civil Defense leader for a 20 mile stretch of the Oregon coast which was still unpopulated then. He, my father, and my uncles and others in that area provided 7x24 search and look out duty. People today might not appreciate that the concern of sighting enemy ships, or submarine and espionage activity was very real then. I have their medals for thousands of hours of volunteer work. There were also blimps from near Tillamook that did similar work over the first few miles of ocean, especially over inlets, bay, and harbors. All those boys went on to serve during the Korean war. Proud of them.
Those clean up tips would have saved me much effort restoring a vintage Stanley thermos picnic jug. Simple steps several of which I completely overlooked. Thanks once again for such useful information!
Nice helmet work. I had forgotten about the two marks on radio dials for CD. Did lots of duck and cover drills during Cuban Missle Crisis, living right next to a major USAF base and the Norfolk Naval Base just across the bay from us. I recall having nightmares of nuclear holocost.
You did the helmet justice, nice save. I remember grammar school (camp Koehler grounds) where we got under our desks and the teacher closed the food and closed the drapes. Our neighbor had a bomb shelter under there garage that the government built. Oh I remember a big tower close to the school to detect unwanted aircraft. That was yesteryear.
The helmet looks great and i am impressed that all it took was soap and water, Comet and paste wax! Thanks for sharing this and the speech by President Kennedy and the Civil Defense.
Another great show, Scout. It really hit home for me as I grew up in the late 50's and thru the 60's and remember the duck and cover drills we practiced in school, the CD signs and instructions found in public buildings, and our next door neighbor who was a mason and built a fallout shelter behind his home. It fascinated us kids no end watching him build the structure from start to finish. It's still there today and the current owner uses it as a combination workshop and man cave.
I'm old enough to remember (clearly) all of the History Buffs portion. I was an Army brat (very early teens) in Germany during the Berlin crisis, the Bay of Pigs crisis, the Kennedy assassination, and of course the nuclear war silliness which included sheltering under school room desks, etc.
It’s amazing the history you experienced through life- We are going through some amazing history right now too. I was only a year old when Kennedy was assonated but I remember everyone knew where they were when they heard the news. Similar to 9-11. When we look back at life so many events that happened… 😃👍
The under the desk routine, I remember that, about all it accomplished was saving us from the steady death drone of the listening to a teacher I had at the time, you had to fight to stay awake in the class! 😮😊. Nice job on the helmet, came out nice. As far as welding, well, I spent many hours under a weld helmet/shield, it is an art, it requires a lot of knowledge and a good skill set, with a want to improve that skill set, when people tell me they can weld, well let’s just say I give them the look like that little dog you show periodically, you know the one “yeah right, what ever you say” look!!😂😂😂 thanks for the video, enjoyed watching sir.8
Nice job on the helmet it looks real nice. I remember when I was in school they used to test the air raid sirens every so often and we had to get underneath the desk when they did that.
Another great episode, I’m was in elementary school and middle school in the 2000’s and we still practiced the bomb routine in the hallways with out hands on our heads. We also had a teacher that would demonstrate the effect of a bombing by having us hide under our desks, as he threw heavy textbooks on the top.
What an awesome video! I can remember being quietly terrified over the colored tags we were shown @ school. Each color signified a particular neighborhood, imprinted with your address. They were to be tied on our clothing in case we had to leave school in an emergency. We were directed to go straight home, by the shortest route, and to go to any house if we couldn't make it home. We were trained for things dropping out of the sky, unlike today where the kids are trained for mass shooters. Crazy stuff, for sure.
Awesome job on the helmet. I recall having to climb under my desk at school during the air raid drills back in the late 1960's and early 1970's. While in elementary school.
I remember seeing the Fallout Shelter signs in each of the schools I went to. Nice job on the CD helmet, Scout. Looking back, it is amazing what the state of our country was like in the early cold war days. 😀👍
Hi John, sounds like our weather is similar. We went down to 28 last night. Burrrr. It was cool over the weekend with highs in the low 40’s. I remember doing the duck and cover drills in second grade. We did them under our desks and in hallways with windows where we had to duck under the window part. Nice CD helmet job. It goes perfect with your Geiger Counter. I guess when the SHTD, you are all set. Best Regards, John
Thanks John, this was very interesting to me, the cold war always seemed to us more prominent in Europe (despite the obvious issue of Cuba) so it's an education to see the real concern of ordinary people in the US and the authorities, scary times for many ! My wife and I have been watching a series about the Reagan era and the real threat of escalation and it was a big part of our lives in the mid 80s ! Your restoration was spot on, great tips on assessing products and going easy with the cleaning up, the result was excellent !
Nice restoration on the CD helmet. Those pics of the kids under their desks brought back lots of memories from the fifties. I never was quite sure why we were doing that drill but enjoyed missing math! My father had me and my two brothers digging a fallout shelter in the side yard but eventually gave up on it and had us cover it up. I realized he was just keeping us out of his hair!
WOW!! great work on the Civil Defense helmet. In addition, that you for the historic recordings and the saying from Theodore Roosevelt. The temps here have been down to 18 at night.
Nice job on that helmet. I have a bunch of transistor radios with the marks on 640 and 1240. I have one of those yellow CD transceivers that was part of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service.
Nice work on that helmet john. I believe we are the same age. I can remember doing the duck and cover under our desks and in the hallways at school. Fun but scary times, like now. 😃👍🏻🇺🇲
Your civil defense helmet reminded me of a time around 1956 or 7 I was 13 years old and living in California on the coast. It was shortly after WW II and the threat of an attack from offshore was real. The OCD, Office of Civil Defense, had a watchtower I my neighborhood. I volunteered to man the tower one day a week. It was my duty to observe and report any aircraft or ocean going vessel. I had to give descriptions, headings and speed as best as I could judge. After a year I was awarded a set of wings as a lapel pin. I'd forgotten all about that. Thanks for reminding me.
Nice job John. You are spot on about trying something new as well. I learned the hard way that when taking on a house repainting job, that it is better to start at the back yard side first. I am a carpenter/builder, not a painter but I thought I could save my grandparents some money by painting their house for them. By the time I reached the front, it was quite good looking. The back, not so much.
Greg- It always takes a little while to get into the groove. I used to joke that when double brakes or ball joints the first one takes you 50 minutes and the second takes 15. 😂👍
@ John, so true. My challenge has always been that I am impatient. My current solution is to stop, take a break for a coffee or something and then go back to the task. Sometimes bit might need van overnight break. If I don’t, I am likely to get cranky and break something. :-)
Nice job on the helmet John! I really enjoyed the last part too. I remember having to get under our desk at school too lol😂. ( Like that was really going to save us )😂😂😂 Thank You for sharing
