  • Amazing footage of the last trolley buses in service in Bournemouth. The system was finally to close in April 1969 after only 33 years in existence, but in that time it had developed 22 routes to become the second largest network outside London, in the South of England. The buses were unique to in that they had two stair cases to the upper deck. Some great street scenes for those that are familiar with Bournemouth and Christchurch or remember visiting the area on holiday. Of course we must not forget the famous Christchurch turntable that allowed the buses to terminate in the narrow streets at the end of the High Street, now preserved as a listed building and last but not least enjoy the many shots of the Mallard Road depot, now a retail park.

Thank you for making me feel very old, I remember these - there's nothing like a Trolly Bus ride to Bournemouth West Station passing the Pier Approach Baths, being stopped by the Policeman on point duty at the Pier Approach Zebra crossing (No Flyover back then), pass the Winter Gardens on the left and around the Square and up Commercial Road.
All gone but I'm still here to moan about it all.

Great footage, loved it, such a shame these trolleybuses anc trams were removed from our towns and cities, what asset these systems would been today

So true. The Swansea and Mumbles Railway closed on the 5th January 1960 opened in 1804 as a horse drawn tramway.

Amazing footage thank you. I wasn't born until 1967, but have lived in Bournemouth all my life. I love footage of old Bournemouth, before it was wrecked. With the accelerated destruction of the town over the last 25 years or so, I find that footage even much older than this has more in common visually with my 70s childhood. I especially enjoyed the footage at Kinson Road/ Wonderholme Parade, which I still pass a few times a week. I've seen plenty of footage, but not so close to the area I grew up in. I was born in the wrong era I think. Many Thanks!

My grandad used to drive for Hants & Dorset. Mostly between Parkstone and Bournemouth. I think it was the number 23 route. Terminating at the old underground bus station bournemouth. He also used to drive the Royal Blue coaches. I often remember looking forward to going on the big yellow trolley buses. Especially the open top.

Only trolley buses were allowed up Richmond hill as diesel buses couldn't make the incline. Trolleys were smooth, fast and quiet and quite entertaining on a frosty morning with the overhead tracks sparking.

Surely we took a backwards step in many ways. This could have, with some adjustments made, been a greener solution to public transportation.

I lived in Ensbury Park from 1948 to 1957, and travelled on route 30 or 31 many times. I was sad to see the demise of trolleybuses throughout the UK. Here in NZ the last trolley bus system in the capital, Wellington, were discontinued in October 2017, even though the three axle single deckers were less than ten years old. Typical vandalism by those in authority!

Very nostalgic. I didn’t travel on the last trolley bus but I did travel on them earlier that day. At 12.10 it’s the castle in background, not the Priory. In 2021 the turntable is STILL there but now in the courtyard/private car park of a retail/residential development and is difficult even to see. You certainly wouldn’t see the castle from it now.

An interesting film of this well-known system, but unfortunately a very poor video transfer-the yellow skies are particularly frightening!

Trolley buses where classed as light rail ie trams and I understand exempt from a lot of highway code rules

I dont know why we don't see anymore use of generator trailers Trolleybus, this would enable them to showed off more especially in their home system.

why on earth did they take the trolleybus lines down, who paid who to kill of the greener system to replace it with far less relibile and toxic system ?

Incompetent local Councillors and National politicians - Look at the way Beeching had already destroyed the Railway branch lines. In about 1900 you could sit on an open top tram from Christchurch high street through Westbourne and Parkstone to Poole - What a great trip that would have been if you could still do it today!

British and French women boasted the biggest bra cup sizes as they ate real butter, full cream milk and raw dairy. Sadly as european women too (like their American counterparts had done decades earlier) also embraced the low fat mantra and they became too flat chested. Now thanks to low quality dairy women have to resort to surgery to get bigger bosoms. Raw milk is the best bust enhancer!!
