Does Bullying Cause Anxiety?

  • Bullying often doesn't end when school does. It has a way of seeping into every area of our lives, affecting our relationships, careers and overall well-being.
Childhood bullying can be a form of anxiety and trauma that carries over into later life and adulthood, often repeatedly showing up as generalised or social anxiety, and it can even lead to PTSD and panic attacks. The pain and distress sufferers experience impacts almost every aspect of their lives leaving them feeling lonely, isolated, vulnerable, helpless and anxious.
Bullying is victimising, shaming and humiliating, and it is a hurtful way to make someone feel rejected. When someone is bullied, they become ostracised, dismissed and isolated, and often go on to develop feelings of unworthiness, guilt and inadequacy.
Bullying can be a combination of emotional or physical abuse and someone who has been bullied as a child, may continue to be bullied long after their school days are over.
If this sounds like you, understand that what happened to you was not your or their fault. Bullies often do what they do because they are struggling with something in their own lives.
Bullies are often insecure and trying to fulfil a need for control.
What skills would have helped you back then? If it was confidence, work on building up your confidence. If it was resilience, how can you build on this?
Bullies thrive on undermining self-esteem. Rebuild yours by focusing on your strengths, achievements, and positive qualities.
Techniques like mindfulness meditation and deep breathing exercises can help manage the resulting anxiety.
What coping strategies did you use when you were younger? See if you are still applying those same strategies today. Are you still hiding away and playing small so you are not noticed?
Learn to identify and challenge the negative thought patterns that fuel anxiety. Replace them with positive thoughts and self-compassion.
IF YOUR CHILD IS STILL BEING BULLIED AT SCHOOL:
Keep a written record of every event you are aware of. Keep communication open with your child so they know you are supporting them and listening to them.
Speak to the safeguarding lead at school so you understand how they are protecting your child.
Talk to the Head of Year, then escalate to the Head of School.
Ask to see their bullying policy and your child’s school record.
If you are still not satisfied with the way the school is handling your complaint, escalate to the Board of Governors, and finally escalate to Ofsted.
