He's on such another level that he's able to get all kinds of sweet nuances in his tone--all because his right hand is soooo relaxed. It's as if he was born with that bow in his hand. His playing is incredible!!!

I was so relieved when I left the world of "classical" music. In some instances I understand wanting to portray music precisely and 'in period' but there comes a point when musicians are free to do whatever works for them. This guy plays the hell out of the double bass while sitting in chair, who cares what his technique looks like haha!
I once read something some one said about the bass, and listening to this, now I know why. This is what he said; "The Cello shines in music that's emotional feel is happy with a slight hint of sadness in it, like a parent watching their child graduate high school and going to college, proud of their child and hopeful of the future, yet their heart breaking from their child growing up and become their own adult. The Bass, however, is the king of pure sorrow. It's lows are so dark and colorful and it's highs are so soft and light, it's like the weeping of a mother who's lost her child. The lows resonate loudly the moaning of pure grief and the high range sounds as if the instrument's voice is crying and unable to get it's voice to speak. I'm a brass player but I'd chop my left leg off to have grown up in a school system with an orchestra program to become a bass player."

I’m currently in an orchrestra at my school, and i can proudly say that Rinat has persuaded me to keep playing the bass. I hope to find this comment years later, hopefully becoming a true; bassist (rather than a school-kid). Rinat is most definitely going to be missed, but his lasting impact will change my musical life forever. Thank you Rinat, for providing such beautiful pieces such as this one. We all miss you, 💗.

I think the problem is not that the bass can't sing as an instrument. It is just fiendishly difficult to achieve. That's why most people don't bother to write for it, because the number of people being able to play that is small.
Hi Andrew914, the sound that you can mainly hear in this video and the Dittersdorf was recorded using an AB spaced pair of DPA 4006 microphones, about 5m from the players and about 4m high. The bass has a Neumann TLM103 and the piano a pair of Schoeps MK21 capsules as close mics, but as I remember there isn't a great deal of these used in the final mix. It was recorded into Pro Tools through preamps in an RME Micstasy and a pair of Focusrite ISA 220s. Hope that answers your question!
There are many beautiful things in life, but few compare to listening to a virtuoso play their instrument. It becomes impossible to say where the performer ends and the Instrument starts, and vice versa. The dedication, time, and talent that melds player and Instrument is truly amazing.
WOW! I'm actually a guitar luthier, but in my shop the last couple of days, has been a double bass by Meisel in w Germany. I am charged with carving a new bridge and fixing the myriad of problems arising from 35 years of use. I've spent 30 hours on it so far and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I tell you this because I probably won't charge the musician for what's it's worth. Now I know why! My efforts are trivial when compared to performers like this! Crazy coming back to this video every year or so. It feels like yesterday I was 8 years old watching this almost everyday so amused by how versitile the double bass could be. Sounds I never thought would be made on the instrument and now I am here studying the same instrument in college and watching the same video.
This is so lovely... the sound is incredible, and watching Ibragimov play is, as always, like a dream. He makes it look so flawlessly effortless. I can only hope to one day reach this level of musicianship.
Check out how his middle and ring finger (right hand) are just hovering, not even touching the bow most of the time. He's playing so relaxed/lightly and drawing (pulling) such a great sound. Fantastic stuff, Rinat.. bravo!

He as well as for instance Bozo Paradzik are very deep in the art of contrabass, which is the most diffucult instrument to play classical music solos, specially those which are written for smaller and easier instruments like cello and violin. Listeners remember: every single contrabass instrument has its own sound and nature and the result is always a combination of the player and the instrument. Like the rider and the horse. At times I often question why I chose the bass to play. I started off as a viola, but after three weeks I was begging my mom to switch my instruments, and she did. I have been happily playing the bass for 6 years now, and though I'm talented people like this inspire me to work so much harder, because I want to be more than what I am. Thank you for all your wonderful music, soon I will be playing songs like these for my senior year as a memory to imbed into my highschool. @@jayw8726 lol I joined the marine corps. I was going to try out for the marine Corp band but realized quite quickly that what I had was a hobby. Had I put in the effort I think that it's possible that I could have gone down the path of a professional, but I didn't want to put in the effort and I went into a tech field job. Looking back it's kind of sad that those dreams died off, but I'm married and have a kid now and things are ok, so I couldn't really ask for more.

Makes no difference whether its a german or frenvh bow we'te striving for the higher reasonance emanating from the style of wood we're playing on learning on. He´s really playing in a class of its own...! I love playing and listening to the bass (upright and bass guitar) because it can so deep and low yet it can sound so high pitched like a guitar or viola.
Because technically playing a double bass requires more technique domain than a violin to achieve a good and clean sound, so it’s not a “popular” instrument

Bobby and Johanna, you're taking a really misguided point of view on the bass as a solo instrument. The high-register bass has a very unique timbre that couldn't be replicated by any other stringed instrument, and that in of itself is good enough reason for its solo repertoire to make use of it. And that's not to mention the fact that a low-register bass would be extremely difficult to hear over an orchestra. Cellists play in the register of violinists all the time, but I'll bet you wouldn't go saying that Saint-Saens Cello Concerto 1 should never have been written because it's 'trying imitate the violin'.

As a cellist, it's really striking me how much more physical effort it takes to make routine shifts on the bass. This is a phenomenal performance.

This performance gets infinitely more impressive after you try playing a string bass. It's easily one of the most difficult instruments to tame.

I'm not going to comment on the bass playing, but the pianist is worth her weight in gold!
I love playing and listening to the bass (upright and bass guitar) because it can so deep and low yet it can sound so high pitched like a guitar or viola.
That has to be the best sounding upright bass I have ever heard! And the player has perfect pitch too, well played.

Gakupo Murtagh violin is just limited with it's note range. Unlike bass, if you can shift good, you can go up to violin e string range

Because technically playing a double bass requires more technique domain than a violin to achieve a good and clean sound, so it’s not a “popular” instrument

Musique de ce concerto pour contrebasse est un concerto d'une vivacité( où des aires de repos sont aménagées ) , pleine de joie , d'entrain et l'aspect grave de la contrebasse , si difficile à jouer en dehors des parties d'accompagnements , a un effet tout à fait bénéfique pour l'auditeur , car si vous voulez retrouver en vous le pays calme du sourire , écoutez ces morceaux en qui rien , je vous l'assure n'est anodin si bien que Amadeus Mozart appréciait cet extraordinaire petit maître qu'était Vanhall .

This man is a genious. I play the violin and once in the orchestra tried to press a bass string.. woow... its so hard! he has talent... incredible!
Bobby and Johanna, you're taking a really misguided point of view on the bass as a solo instrument. The high-register bass has a very unique timbre that couldn't be replicated by any other stringed instrument, and that in of itself is good enough reason for its solo repertoire to make use of it. And that's not to mention the fact that a low-register bass would be extremely difficult to hear over an orchestra. Cellists play in the register of violinists all the time, but I'll bet you wouldn't go saying that Saint-Saens Cello Concerto 1 should never have been written because it's 'trying imitate the violin'.
