I've had a successful, full time Etsy POD shop since 2020, and I wanted to comment on some of the things being said in this video. When I started, I had zero design experience, and my designs weren't good at all. However, I didn't shut down my shop and give up, I simply practiced and studied design on my own. The strategy of finding a bestseller and creating something better is still viable and I use that strategy paired with coming up with my own ideas and taking a chance with completely original design ideas. If you decide to just do the latter, you will find yourself creating hundreds of untested designs to land on the one or two that could take off. It's a lot more work than studying popular niches/best sellers and improving upon them, because you don't want to recreate the wheel every time you list. Albeit, my version of a best selling niche is WAY different than what's out there, and in my own style. I don't just slightly change an aspect or two. I've gotten better at spotting what will sell and what won't, so I'll also find an already made design that I think will do well, purchase the rights, and create a listing from that too. I just don't want folks who aren't good at designing to feel that they won't have a chance, and to completely give up on the idea. You'll become a good designer by trying, and doing! Combine all the strategies you learn from youtube, or purchased classes, and you'll be successful.
I agree… I was a graphic design major 20 years ago, and I find myself loving designing brand new things that I have never seen before. With that being said, I am also re-learning a lot of the newer graphic design trends, and educating myself from other major graphic design artists on UA-cam… I actually feel guilty to copy someone else’s work, even if it is to improve it for the better, but I only do it when I really feel I see some thing that I know 100% I can make look 1000 times better I don’t do it with everything.
Wow, hearing your story about putting your saw in your truck and driving to a road to do the work for your orders, brought tears to me eyes just because I know that struggle myself and it shows how determined you were about your business. You stuck through every challenge and look where you grew to today!! And look how you are helping others achieve that. You are very inspirational. I was so glad to come across your channel. Im pondering between the two (print on demand vs physical product). It just feels so much more personal making it yourself. ❤️ Thanks for helping guide me in the right direction. 😊
I have a POD store and... it really grinds my gears that so many Etsy sellers seem to copy other people's popular designs.. It seems like since all these Tik Tokers have been promoting POD as an easy/quick side hustle people have been making sketchy shops just to make money.
I create all my designs, and I created a really pretty butterfly image. I looked on Etsy after I posted it, and realized it’s a very popular butterfly and there’s several similar images. I promise I did not copy anyone’s art, but I still worry about it :( I think I might update the design, cause I should probably stand out and be more unique.

My Mom is a painter and has painted 100s of paintings. I told her, you know what, we should digitize these and sell them as print on demand images...so here I am...learning how thatd all work lol
@Dylan Jahraus thanks! Her and my Dad are retired and needing supplemental income so I thought hmmm...I bet we could use all these paintings she's done and crop the images different ways and make cute designs for shirts or cute canvas bags w the paintings in full form etc. Thanks for making the video! One plus is she mostly paints mythical figures, animals, under and above water landscapes so literally 0 concerns about copyrights or anything cause it's all from her own mind. Really hoping once I help her get it all going and set up that it'll be a good small source of passive income that'll help my parents get by wo having to go back to work at their ages!
Yay! So I guess I can do POD! I am a professional fashion designer and have a unique point of view and a good understanding of sales. Let’s see how it goes
Eh, there's a real misconception about POD b/c people still associate it with shirts, sweatshirts and mugs. There are SOOO many Etsy shops and Shopify stores that are POD and people don't realize it b/c of the products they are selling and the mocks they are using - it's not hard to get mocks or video for POD w/o doing actual photography by the way. Many of these POD "gurus" aren't really doing people favors.
I have been selling digital products and it is great. Love it. Today I thought about a physical product I have access to that could sell for high ticket prices. They are physical products. As I was doing my research on selling these physical products, I then realized that along with those physical products, I can also sell spiritual posters, meditation bracelets, and workout templetes. There are so many templetes and hand bags, and tshirts and mugs that all go with the phyical products. I realiszed by putting these in one store with a varitey of items I an sell, it is perfect. It son't need to be one or the other. If someone sells puppy clothes, they can also sell mugs, tshirts and hand bags that also go with the doggy clothes.
Just found your channel very interesting video. There are so many influencers out there hyping up POD and how much money you can make from it. However alot of those videos show how to take clip art and images online or how to find inspiration from other's designs that sell well. And then basically copying the fundamental idea, altering it, or making something similar to sell more of. Sadly some of them do well by doing this But it's still all the same copy cat designs repeated over and over again. The only things I ever bought on Etsy were handmade so you are right about that.
I love your videos, they are so informative! I will definitely keep moving forward! This video has me a little discouraged😢 I know I can do this! Thanks for all you do!
You inspire me so much! I really want to be able to quit my corporate job even though it allows me to work from home, it is not fulfilling and the creativity is being snuffed out of me.

Either way pod or physical your gonna need a little bit to get started...for pod You still need a way to have some type of card on file because for example when somebody orders a shirt for me I pay for the shirt. I pay for the shipping up front and then after the sale is when Etsy pays me. So you're going to have to have a way to cover that until you can get money built up and start making profits and then same with physical. You're going to have to have enough money to create your products. Also to look into shipping I use pirate shipping makes it cheaper. It's usually 30 to 40% off what you would take it to the post office or UPS to save money. And also if you have things for instance say like Canva at paper canva pro because it gives me more options and then also for my print on demand. I pray the premium because it's saving me money in my profit margin. I started as a physical store and just recently started adding POD for shirts because I felt that everybody around me was doing the sublimation printing and I wanted to be able to offer a high quality print versus something that I'm going to bleach and they're going to have holes in within the next year
Perfect. I did try pod but I couldn’t figure out to fulfill an order. Not info. I am going to make stoneware products and developing a couple Loss of Leader products. Still in the development stage. Great tips!
I am a graphic designer and have started a digital print store - I would love to hear your advice on selling digital on Etsy. Thank you for all the great content so far!

For POD you said ~500 listings for 1st month or so, do you still suggest making multipile listings for the same item or was that more for the other types of sellers?

What would you suggest on how much inventory to list on etsy? I would have a very substantial upfront cost in leather alone if I had to carry to much inventory, that may not sell quickly, or at all.... (depending on my stores ranking)... What would a minimum number of items to carry per listing??... It takes 2-3 days for a leather item to be manufactured when you factor in drying time for the dye and the waxes... Which isn't long, but would add shipping time....
While I don't begrudge someone making good money from POD, it slightly bothers me for anyone to encourage doing knock offs and copying someone else's idea and trying to steal profits from the original person. It's not exactly noble and yes, it has flooded Etsy with too many shops doing POD who expect to make a quick buck without any work. And with so many sellers on Etsy the true handmade products are buried, I miss the days when Etsy really had specialty items. I also wonder if the POD products are made in US or in China? Thanks for making these points that not all POD is glamorous or such a great thing.
I sell supplies and it is taking a lot of space but I am finding space. Hopefully if I list a lot more items then I’ll get more sales. I have about 230 listings but it seems like supply sellers have like 600-3,000 items. I hope one day to do my shop full time. 😀(so if I’m a supply shop, should I list 100 items just in the first month or 100 items every month?)
I would LOVE to sell physical products on Etsy, and I like shipping things - but I live in New Zealand :( And the prices are ridiculous to send overseas (and would take forever to get there). Would love to hear what you think about digital products. Love your videos
I am really trying to understand how a physical product based business is better, if it relies on you physically manufacturing the items you sell. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick entirely here? If you need to build those items, you’re only able to build so many in 24 hours… I don’t understand how it can be scalable. It just seems to be labour intense and once you hit your limit then you can’t provide more than that unless you hire help/ an employee, if that makes sense? Please tell me if I’m totally confusing strategies… I’m considering starting Etsy but it all seems a bit confusing!
Hi Joanna! There are quite a few nuances to physical products and ways to play in this space where you're not personally doing much physical production. You can spend 10 minutes on an item that you can charge $150 for and make $100 profit on (and yes, this is after your COGS/shipping/Etsy fees). If you do 6 of those per hour your hourly wage is at $600/hour. You can certainly outsource to scale faster and I do teach when/how to do this and where to find your first employees as well. If you're interested and want to chat more I definitely recommend scheduling a free call with me sometime. Here's a link to my calendar if you'd like to talk more: calendly.com/dylanjahraus/program-strategy-call?month=2022-09
what are your thoughts on the etsy free shipping guarantee? i know that when you go to turn it off it says you wont be placed in placement ect but this could make the seller eat their own costs and have no profit? i have some items that are free shipping with a decent margin and others i have they pay shipping or else i have to add 7-8 to the listing for free shipping and people may not purchase due to higher costs then another listing?
It all depends on where you sit within the competition and if you already have a market leader listing or if you are struggling to get visibility in search! Etsy doesn't prioritize the free shipping guarantee as much as we sometimes think they do-- don't stress too much about having this!
@@dylanjahraus I was going to turn it off and then today one of my listings is on the first page search for magic mugs!!!! I was so excited only had two sales but apparently doing something right to get on first page ....I went through and seen my prices and if they did hit for free shipping what could I list them at and still make at least $1 profit. Took your advice from other videos and lowered prices to cover my costs and make 2-4 profit..after 100 sales I'll go up some depending on how many sales getting
I have a couple of different options depending on how much support you're looking for! If you'd like to chat more send me an email at team@DylanJahraus.com or schedule a call with me to learn more about the course: calendly.com/dylanjahraus/program-strategy-call?month=2022-10
My husband had the same question about if these people are so successful, why are they teaching people on UA-cam making videos to do the same thing? And I explained to him they have made $$$$ and teaching is an outsource to more $$$$$ and If you look into the statistics of opening a Etsy shop, usually people within the first 3 months they're motivated and then they just stop because I don't seeing the thousands of dollars coming in and then they say oh this is a scam. This isn't what I was promised. How did they do it? Well the answer to that is these people are giving up or they're not putting in enough work to do this. I started as a physical item store on tumblers Just on my Facebook only. Just last Christmas I made 5K and one week just for making tumblers. So now I'm looking into an Etsy store which I just opened mine and hopefully with physical and POD I can sit in this woman's shoes....it won't happen overnight and you gotta treat it like a job and put in the work to reap benefits

Took your advice from other videos and lowered prices to cover my costs and make 2-4 profit..after 100 sales I'll go up some depending on how many sales getting
thank you for the infromation god bless
Our pleasure!

So I just relized You speak about multimillion dollar busines. Are you borred while make money and started youtube chanell 2 month ago?
It's all about outsourcing production to scale further. Bored? No! Do I love building businesses? Yes!
