Written in 1979-1980, it appeared as the lead single and albumopener on the 1980 album Never For Ever. The bass in this video is just a prop to use for the choreography. It represents the husband who is tricked into betraying his wife, by his wife, testing how faithful he actually is after years of marriage. The shattering glass gives away how it all ends.
Love the video to this song, it really tells the story so well with the double bass playing the part of her husband. The shattered glass effect to the end was made using the new Fairlight CMI synthesiser which she and Peter Gabriel both pioneered, they apparently cost as much as a small house back in the day.
Lovely reaction Bry, lots of interesting stuff. You're uncertainty over the timing is spot on, she was at the bridge between the 70s and 80s, first off her 3rd album and the introduction to Kate as producer as well as singer/songwriter. I'm not sure why she has the double bass, I suppose it's just an anonymous dance partner for her, playing the part of the man/music. Your idea of filming 1st listen then listening again and reacting is a good one, I think you'll find the 2nd listen will take you to your 3rd and 4th listens easily. My partner is a huge Madonna fan, every time he sees this video he says that Madonna never ever wore as 'sexy' an image and costume as the Babooshka video, (he says this approvingly) and you can imagine how eye-catching that costume was in 1980, she blew our socks off with that Warrior Woman look. Kate was a pop music 'groundbreaker' in many ways. It actually caused Kate a bit of a problem in the early 80s when she was being promoted as, very obviously, the very sexy woman that she is, while Kate herself was more interested in promoting the music than her 'image', and that led to her withdrawal from 'public life' more or less, not joining the 'celebrity carpet bandwagon' and gaining a reputation as a recluse. (All she was doing was preserving her 'normal life' as much as possible, and bringing up her son away from the spotlight) I think you're enjoying Kate's earlier output a bit more than the 80s stuff, perhaps the 80s production isn't to your taste (I get that, it was a 'sound'), but don't forget Kate's 2005 and 2011 albums, (the Summer (Aerial) and Winter (50 Words For Snow) albums) they have some of her most beautiful compositions on. Keep going, this goldmine isn't empty yet...
Kate said in an interview that when she wrote the song, she was not aware that Babooshka meant Grandmother. She just loved the sound of the word so she used it for the wife's incognito character. As others have said the double bass is a prop here to represent her husband who she is testing for infidelity. Kate's main instrument has been the piano and keyboards (she was a pioneer in the use of the Fairlight CMI, which she used for the first time in "Babooshka" when she sampled the breaking glass). Kate also did play electric bass and lead guitar on her song "Big Stripey Lie" from The Red Shoes album
Very Interesting! It wasn’t as easy to verify things back then, and maybe it wasn’t that important to her anyway at the time she wrote the song. I wonder what Russians thought 🤔
I was born in 1973, the three music videos that were seared into my brain were; Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall (part 2) And this one. Recently I was talking to an old school friend who is in a band about Kate Bush. Yeah Kate is stunningly attractive, but she has the talent to back it up.
Kate is not using the word “Babooshka” in its literal sense. She just liked the sound of the word and thought it would be a good pseudonym to use by his wife in signing “scented letters” (from a secret admirer) to test her husbands faithfulness. A big mistake!
@@Dyrla67 it was the name of a friends cat, but I don't know if Kate knew that before she finished writing the song. What she did say is that when she did finish the song is that she kept encountering the word Babooshka in different contexts....
Another term for Babooshka (with a slightly different spelling) is a headscarf tied under the chin worn by Russian peasant women, hence the scarf Kate is wearing when she's portraying the wife here.
I'm not sure if anyone's ever cited this -- I'm not sure even Kate Bush remembers -- she said a few decades ago that she thinks she got the idea from one of the BBC's showing of an old movie -- I believe that movie is THE GUARDSMAN -- starring the famous theater couple Lunt and Fontanne -- in which it is the husband who disguises himself as a Russian Guardsman and woos his wife to test her fidelity -- the exact plot of Kate's song, except with the sexes reversed. And since he's a Russian Guardsman, maybe that's why Kate came up with the nickname of "Babooshka" for her alter-ego -- an older woman getting back in touch with her younger self.
Love your reactions, next you might like to check out "The Ninth Wave", it's a series of songs on her Hounds of Love album that tells the story of a woman abandoned at sea, and she falls asleep and starts having dreams/nightmares about various things. My personal favorite from it is "Hello Earth", it's a cinematic masterpiece imo. Kate herself says she sees the project as a movie
Also, "Hammer Horror" is another good song to check out and it has a music video as well. The Ninth Wave doesn't have any music videos but it's still amazing
She was actually a sex symbol too, although I couldn't have been aware of that at the time. It really couldn't have penetrated America at the time because it didn't have that kind of soul. Which makes me more amazed really that it does now. Her earlier work, in particular, highlights the gap between the cultures.
She tested him and he lept..she couldn't have made a worst move...ie mature woman pretends to be a younger woman fawning over him and he bites..now she knows and must accept her vulnerability Please, gushing over Kates looks every video isn't necessary
I suspect that Babooshka is being used, not in the sense of grandmother, but in the perhaps not strictly correct sense of babooshka dolls (="Russian dolls"). So, the husband "unwraps" the new woman to find his wife inside!
@@BryPazReacts According to Wikipedia, "In the West, matryoshka dolls are often referred to as babushka dolls, though they are not known by this name in Russian ..." It is also a bit ironic that Kate uses the spelling Babooshka instead of the equally valid Babushka, as in Kate Ba-Bush-ka!
a comment from a russian viewer - I still have the full collection of an Ex-singer KB but today this music is not what I would usually listen. By the by KB does a wrong stress on Babooshka word and for a russian ear it sounds rather like Padushka ( a pillow ) Listen to the other idols, fe - Siouxsie & the Banshees tracks like Candyman, Forever, Kiss them for me...It's much better, highly recommend. + A russian clip from that time with balalaika here - ua-cam.com/video/xvP89XyMUKk/v-deo.html
@@BryPazReacts I've noticed that as well, when you're listening, the video is usually slightly out of synch. It doesn't bother me, I'm so familiar with the songs anyway. Kates Brother plays the Balalaika , he plays instruments from the dawn of time , and loads of countries

Babooshka is a term of endearment as well. She uses it as her name as she pretends to be her husbands secret admirer. See if he will cheat.
Rocket's Tail and The Ninth Wave - all at once, the whole thing LOL 🙂
