    Beautiful as always. Was chatting to someone about my trip last Sept and they were happy I missed all the horrible things happening. When every thumbnail is titled "Disaster Iceland", you can imagine what an image that projects to potential tourists, who think the whole of Iceland is under siege from volcanos! I see one of the local Icelanders got totally fed up with her, and started putting out videos calling her out on her BS. Well done, would be great if more did that!

    • @JustIcelandic

    1:10 the outbreak to the north of the crater is mentioned. This was a highlight, but temporary. A small pooling occured near the crater. The stream flowing to the south didn't seem to be effected and it continues unabated. The major lava flow is still toward the defences of Grindavik. Where the earthworks have not relented. Presumably this is the engineer's response to careful monitoring of the actual accumulation. Good luck and thanks.

      For sure Iceland isn't cheap, but it is waaayyy better than it used to be & if you are coming from somewhere like the UK or USA then the prices aren't really that bad. The HOT tap water can be a little smelly at times in some places - you soon get used to it. If you COLD tap water is smelly then you have a problem! Some of the best tap water to drink in the world!

    Your superb videos and those of Shawn Willsey, Izac Finnbogason and others will hopefully attract more of the discerning tourists to Iceland, to take the place of those put off by those fake fearmongering-for-clicks videos.
    Maybe in August 2026 Iceland will combine two amazing wonders of the world at the same time - an erupting tourist volcano and a total eclipse! Izaks video of the partial eclipse and lava bombs is the highlight of the year so far for me. I can dream of seeing both, but I suspect that week in Iceland will be extraordinarily expensive, so will remain a just a dream, and is probably already getting booked up just for the eclipse.

    I just landed in Iceland for the first time. Iceland air is fantastic!!! I had such a good quick visit and flight. On my return trip passing through in July I’m planning a stopover to explore Iceland. It’s a fantastic opportunity to stay over before my final destination in Sweden. I highly recommend travelling with Iceland Air.

    I've had a number of people ask why am I going to Iceland in August with the volcanic eruptions that are going on. I've told them that it's only the local area around the eruption site that is being affected by the eruption. The rest of Iceland isn't affected by the volcanic activity. I can't wait to come back to Iceland in August. 4 months today I fly to Iceland.

    I was fortunate enough to come and see Litli Hrutur which was a magical experience and actually ate in Grindavik. This current eruption is so different as it has affected the lives of so many people and I can totally understand why it is not classed as a tourist eruption. My heart goes out to the people of Grindavik- but Iceland has so much more to offer so please go and see it - it is a wonderful place.

      Pends on your expectations of course, if you have a rental I would do the ring road with twists here and there, but if you want more of the culture, I would instantly say Akureyri, Húsavík or owner around the fjords Eyjafjörður,and Skagafjörður and the troll peninsula between them. Seen in the last bit of the video, to the left. But feel free to ask me via mail

    Some background "fun" facts about that alarmist youtube channel you refer to - I've followed her a bit as an interesting case study of misinformation and echo-chambering.
    The maker, called Silki, has now also taken to making videos about Campi Flegrei in Italy; e.g. on May 13th she made a video claiming that a supervolcano eruption is imminent (with dramatic pictures, music etc) and that a leading scientist Roberto Scandone (she spent 10% of her video showing random screenshots of his publication list and similar) said he would like to evacuate the region if he had the resources.
    I then checked the original video of Scandone and a summary thereof in a news paper, with the following results:
    - Scandone did not mention a supervolcano (eruption of VEI8 or more), the worst scenario he came up with (of a list of 3) was an explosive eruption of VEI4-5, which means 1000 times less than a supervolcano. To be clear, this would still be very dangerous regionally (Eyjafjallajökull was VEI4 and you don't want that in your backyard) but not the global catastrophe that Silki was trying to sell.
    - Scandone mentioned evacuation, but the context was more subtle: He got asked by the audience what research he would do on the topic if he had unlimited resources. He answered that if he had unlimited resources, he'd evacuate the area because "it's absurd to have a situation like this" (people effectively living in a caldera). He did not say, however, that he recommends an evacuation, with all its tradeoffs, in a more realistic world where he does not have "unlimited" resources.
    As often, Silki manages to just about avoid lying outright. In particular, she did not say explicitly that Scandone had predicted a supervolcano. But by not clearly stating that "Scandone said X, but I think the eruption could even be a supervolcano" she still implies that all her content is backed by Scandone's expertise.
    I tried to call her out for this nonsense, as well as prior nonsense on Iceland, but have the impression that she made my comments invisible (it does not appear when I open youtube in another browser in which I am not logged into my channel). If this suspicion is correct, she makes it nearly impossible to contradict her and point her fans, or people who stumble across her stuff by accident, to her inaccuracies and errors. I also think hiding criticism is very cowardly - if she thought she's right and I'm wrong, she should reply (or hope her fans will defend her).
    So now the situation is that many critical-minded people leave her channel as too alarmist, but those who like alarmism join and applaud her, so she obliges by becoming even more alarmist, whips up even more fear and distrust, etc, and at the end, she kind of creates a little room, or echo-chamber, of alarmists nodding to each other, impervious to factual information on the topic. And along the way, these people are given the impression that scientists "just don't know" (of course, volcanologists are not perfect and cannot predict this system well but this doesn't mean they "just don't know"), that governments are all about greed (again, governments are not angels but where's the nuance) and even that climate change doesn't matter ("so there's a supervolcano going to erupt and people get upset about what car you drive or whether my cow farts!").

      @JustIcelandic  21 день тому

      The channel is all about to dive into strong subjects and pretend to know something, such channels limit their options a great deal and will never grow big plus the risk of being exposed.

    • @KatlaJokulsdottir
      @KatlaJokulsdottir 19 днів тому

      @@JustIcelandic Well I hope for the best that her channel doesn't grow big - some tens of thousands of followers is not exactly nothing. May it shrink and shrivel up!
      But to my annoyance, there seem to be few options to "expose" her. Apparently she can block my critical comments that I left to make her viewers doubt. I also contacted Roberto Scandone to let him know she's misusing is material, but I don't think this has had any effect (I also cannot blame him in case he has other stuff to do). Some others have reported her to UA-cam but to no avail. Laufabrauð made some videos to expose her nonsense but gets much much fewer views than she - and probably he too has more to do in life and not enough resources to keep doing this and build a viewer base, and even if he would build a viewer base, he'd not necessarily reach her fans.
      So I don't see an effective way of "exposing" her / letting her people know she is bullshitting. You know much more about UA-cam than I do so maybe you have a better idea :-) and of course, you are in a way doing it indirectly by providing much better English-language information than she does.

    Thanks for another thoughtful and thought-provoking video. It makes sense that the government does not have the resources to protect people who might do stupid things with the active lava flows and protect the town of Grindavik, the Svartsengi power plant and other facilities in the area. The Blue Lagoon should have their own security guards, but the rest of the area is not safe for a large tourist influx.

    Good to see you have something to say about "her" who has become one of the most prominent gas-lighters on YT regarding Iceland. I hope we get to a point where people intentionally misrepresenting the truth get to become liable for ALL the damage they do, and not get to hide behind 'opinion' while they are requesting people "buy me a coffee". Unfortunately she's got a small army of people with too much time, and too little common sense shilling for her.
