watched this story years ago and find myself returning to it every so often. lulu is an inspiration. I like to think she's still diy-ing it and living her life well with her daughter
I applaud her for not waiting on the government. She maybe poor, but she is self-sufficient and carving out a good life for herself and her children. Great mom! :-)
This Woman is AMAZING!!! She is so grounded and so down to reality, so aligned with herself, her family, nature, and so many other things. The concept of NOT living beyond your means and acknowledging that everything is on lean to us, nothing truly belongs to us forever is so beautiful. I wish I could know her in real life, Id love to have her as a friend :)
I loved the interior in her bedroom. Their home may not be as luxurious or glamorous, but it is made by her, with creative and innovative thinking. And it's amazing to me how a person can literally create all of that with a small budget. I love it.
It's our Pre program'd conditioning that makes us think we have to buy into the " American Dream " that more often than Not lead's to out of control Debt Stress and ill Health in our lives turning that dream into a Night Mare ! , People forget we lived like this up untill the beginning of the last century and its wall street's Brain washing that has us believing we can only be happy if we do better than the those rich Nee' Boob's that sell us daily on this over priced life style they they Not us Profit From ! Daniel Kremer You're right. I am not in that much debt, comparatively, but I stayed in a job for 18 years that I wanted to leave around year 8. But, with a family you have to keep up with the debt from all of the crap we seem to think we "NEED". My son and I both would like to live in the woods, with two nicely self-built cabin homes for our families with a small river in the vicinity for canoeing/kayaking/fishing, etc. But, you first need to make sure that you marry a woman that is willing to do the same and hope that she agrees to raise your children off grid w/o all of the "CRAP" that only perpetuates that "American Dream". I am waiting for the day that the power goes out by a hacker group...maybe then people will realize that we set ourselves and our children up to not be able to cope.
Great mom and philosophy. She is a wonderful example for people to look up to. The idea behind many small home owners is working less and enjoying life more. That is so liberating I have to say. I use to be like that always wanting bigger and nicer things, the latest gadgets and toys, etc. Watching these videos has helped me appreciate what I have more and to strive for less in order to achieve more. Wonderful lesson in humility if anything.
This is probably the best tiny house video I've seen on UA-cam; there's just so many nice little things, like the beautiful willow tree, and the many references to Japanese culture, like bathing, drinking tea, wabi-sabi, simplicity, transcience, etc. It really makes me want to build a small house of my own.
I know this is 6 years from upload date but you get it woman! Hell yea! Growing up with a single mother, you mates are legends. Don't stop doing what you do.
I totally Love this lady , ,She is very smart ,resourceful and knows what she is doing I like the fact that she spends little money on things but makes the best of what she spends,,, great job ! Lulu
Was in building for 40 years in Australia and Indonesia . Proud of you - Great job - And a great woman's touch to design - great to see the kids are all happy little vegemite's.
i love the way this woman talks, moves, thinks. she's so down to earth and has her priorities clear. wow! and, yes! I rather spend time with my kids than working to pay rent. love it! Thanks for sharing.
I have to say, I have so much admiration for this lady I can't even tell ya. She made a real home out of nothing. And I wouldn't mind visiting her at all!
Love her can-do attitude, and her Buddhist philosophy on non-attachment and impermanence. Seeing life for what it really is..it's about the journey. Oh, and I'm super impressed with her building skills :) Kirsten, you're led to most interesting people and their wonderful stories..thank you!
This is great:) She saved so much money over the rest of her life that she can feed her family real food:) She doesn't need to slave away for 30-40 hrs a week either. And she gets to be there for her kids a lot more than most parents:)
Wow! what a wonderful, creative and positive person...and the ideal woman- she has great priorities and is obviously a great mom and very happy. I wish there were more people like her here in america.
Kirsten, this is one of your most inspirational videos right here... I would love to see a follow-up and see the japanese style addition, as well as the greenhouse walkway... Love it.
Something that I really love about watching this videos about tiny houses is that it proves a good and old point. That you don't need much to be confortable and have a happy and meaningful life. As long as you really take care of the most important things, like your family you'll be pretty danm good...
I'm in love. The perfect blend of mentality and ability. I want an astronomy lesson. lol. This house represents the best philosophy for a healthy future. Living light with less is the only way to save the planet. Thanks this is the greatest thing I've seen on utube in a long time.
She is one of the most imaginative and creative a person as I've seen here on youtube. A great person with an enviable perception of what living happily is all about. Kudos...
Oh my God!!! I have 30 year mortgage and living in a crappy old house, which I am constantly working and putting ton of money into fixing along with paying monthly mortgage payment. The sad thing is my house doesn't even look this good as this mini house this lady single handedly built. I am jealous. I would switch houses with her any day. I love it. She did all this with stuff from dump yard and spending couple of hundred dollars. Meanwhile, I am spending thousands of dollars every year constantly maintaining my old and crappy house. Amazing..... Good luck to you sweet and pretty lady. Heck, I would marry her any day. I love smart ladies like herself.
Even under those conditions that most of us would deny, she is secure and happy.. Much respect and love from Portugal to this fighter and beautiful woman.
Wonderful, she's a lot richer than some of these landowners in London for example because she actually lives her life and is aware of the transitional nature of material wealth, she's rich in the more important stuff! Love her home!
I think this beautiful Lulu is my dream girl! I just Love how she's embraced her personal and financial challenges with the utmost dignity and how creative and positive and how happy she truly is. You can see it in her demeanor , her testimony, eyes and smile. I'd be happy with a true soldier like her anyday. She's astonishingly beautiful inside as well as outside 😍🌲💪❣️
When I was planning on moving out of my mothers house with little money I though of a way to convert a shipping container into a home. Now seeing how someone has done it makes me really happy to know it's possible.
I admire her FREEDOM. Interestingly MOST of US are UNWiLLiNG to be free. We complain about our drudgery but we're CONViNCED that we want to live in 1000+ Sq Feet, 2 cars, dry cleaning, eating out for 4 hours of our labor. It's a CHOiCE like this beauty says.
You are incredible to make it all work in such simplicity with so many kids...truly...I'm at awe. Thank you for reminding me again of what's important.
Very interesting! I do love that she won't compromise on high-end tea and immersion baths. This shows that you can still allow for luxury whilst living frugally and lightly.
i don't understand why people leave negative messages here. she seems very happy and content. and she is there to raise her kids and not hand them off to some nanny.
That's totally gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your creativity with all of us. Godspeed with you and your beautiful children. I'm going to try some DIY myself.
I love the pace of these KirstenDirksen videos - they are so calm and relaxing. Not the rushed 2 minute soundbite you seem to get on TV. Love what Lulu has done too.
+Penelope416 Yes, I agree with you as well. Also by living in a smaller home you fill it with only what you need, you save tons of money & that allows you to have a more fulfilling life, you don't stress about bills or stressing to be in some imaginary competition to have a more bigger fabulous home, you're more relaxed & free, you become more aware as the days pass of what's really important, you become more conscious all together. And you can have a small 800sqft home it doesn't have to be too small but it doesn't have to be extremely big either, it's all about having what you really use verses having because you can afford it. My tiny home journey has just begun, you can see my little piece of land on IG at mslatishabrown801, right now I'm in the process of clearing the land & leveling it out. Lucky for me it was willed to me by my Grandparents, I'm even scaling down my Cadillac & getting one of those really small smart cars. I have a friend that has one & her gas bill for 1 month never exceeds $20.00US & that's filling the take a few times, it's also electric.
+Dereka Heath I wanted to tell you that my journey started because I realized one day that I was so unhappy because I'm one of those people that wanted to see different parts of the world but I didn't because I was working to live in a really great, quiet neighborhood & shop on the weekends but I wasn't traveling because after working my weekends were spent resting up due to being overly worked, I even had stopped shopping & just buying online so basically....I DID NOT HAVE A LIFE. And I simply can't do that anymore. I was given 1 life not 2 so I felt the need, THE MUST, to give myself what I NEED & I NEED A HAPPY LIFE & since I started, I effing love it. I'm going to have a small home but I'm going to also have a jacuzzi tub & I've bought an above ground pool that's sitting under my Mom's deck but I got it on sale. I'm so thankful for the wonderful world of social media & the exchange of information that's being done now, without it I would have never known that scaling down was really upgrading but it depended on the choices that were made. I watched my Grandparents do nothing in their retirement, because my Mom watched too she was able to retire at age 52, she'll be 55 in October but if I can go a step further then that would be a true Blessing.
latishabrown801 that is a beautiful testimony. when you buy a house like this... you pretty much are halfway there to retirement. you have a big gun, something to fall back on and also, like this woman, she can expand and rent or expand for the children when it comes time for them to go to college and want to save on dorm room expense in college unless they go out. Ideas like this, saves money... I am currently wracking ideas. i look forward to featuring my own video once mine is complete and i look forward to your as well.
This video made me feel so happy! Thank you for showing your house, it is beautiful! It reminds me of the house i had thirty years ago when my daughters were children. I was very satisfied with it, and your house is like an oasis!
im a single dad with only one kid to raise.it is very hard work.i have raised him myself for he last 13 years and he will be 18 this winter.never in truoble and a very nice person.this and all woman have my respect. giving your kids a place to call home is the hardest job you will ever love.i love how creative she has been with what she was able to find here and there.we should all recycle more "things" i like old stuff .it has personality
I watched the video and realized it was made in 2011. I would like to know how Lulu is doing now in 2016. do you have any updates on how she and her daughter is doing?
This is what America once was and needs desperately to be again. People solving their own problems in their own common sense, down to earth way. No need to beg permission from officious bureaucrats who never had the right to tell us what we may or may not do in the first place. Well done Madam, well done!
ideally this here is the American Dream (or it should be) but instead the governments have us by the balls slaves to debt. They keep us like hamsters in wheels that are constantly turning. It's time to get off that wheel.
This is many years old now...wonder how she is doing now. She is just the type of woman I wish my boys would bring home! Love her "high end tea drinker" line. It would be an honor to share tea with her. :D
I think what he meant was construction and heavy duty stuff, you wouldn't normally think of a woman. but she is very strong, I would imagine being a mother makes any woman strong, same with being a father. since you have these kids you would want to protect with your life and you would want to give everything you have for the sake of them, i mean stereotypes right? People hate them but they're real. She's one of those people that leaves commoners in awe to build something like this, and maintain a family of 5, whilst being a single mother is nothing short of awesome
+Mike Lucas I love comments like this. When somebody sees a genuinely cool person and recognizes them for how cool they are. I really hope you get to cross paths with her.. Really do.
@@TheJacLangheim It USED to be like that all over America! A homeless family could move into an abandoned home and claim it. If there were no complaints from the neighbors in the first 6 months, and you did something to make it more presentable, it was yours!
It's been 3 years now. Have you raised the bedroom ceiling? Did you connect the rooms so everything was under one roof? It would be fun to see a follow-up. e
I don't think of her as a squatter. I think of her as someone who's sick of paying a mortgage that strengthens the fractional banking system that is designed to make most people poor.
You've built an awesome little home Lulu! Much respect to you! When your kids grow up they will appreciate all this time they got to spend with their mom. :)
Lady you have made my day!!! This women is 100% inspiration!!! She has 4 kids and is living in a CONTAINER!!!! I my self am living in a 2 story 4.5 bedroom appartment with my wife and 2 daughters (alomost3, and almost5) and we feel trapped.... Looking at her and her kids almost made me envy her, weird thing in society these days she should be the one enviying me.... I live in Switzerland, I mean how better could it get? MUCH better!! I have done mission work in Afghanistan and Siouth Africa and during the time I was there I realised one thing, the less you have the happier you are! This video here reminded me of that, and I thank you for that! I wish you all the best and hope your are doing well, just remember you are inspiration for a lot of people out there! God Bless
"material things we don't own them, we just borrow them. We hold on to them for just a while, eventually we just pass them on or give them away to someone else." 8:58
Applauses to my compatriota Argentina . She got the idea very clear , the enjoyment in life does not come in expensive things , but in the apreciation of the simplicity and creativity ...
+dojistar I would hardly say this is a touchstone for proof of that. Very few people, men or women, can manage this level of independence. I'd say the fact that most women in civilized countries ARE independent might be a better metric...
Sheltered people can be happy; some may just be sheltering pearls of wisdom this world has been hungering for. But entitled, shallow, judgemental, insecure divas are no one's cup of tea....
Yea, exactly and I am jealous in case you didn't notice. Her home looks very nice and fancy compared to my $100,000 crappy old home. I really hope stupid local government doesn't hackle her with "PROPERTY TAX." That's the worst thing that can happen.
I grew up with my parents slowly building their own brick house . i grew up on a building site.. sometimes i loved it.. other times I hated it.. but a learned so much. I feel confiident about building my own home
If you're tiny house is on wheels(most are, if you're smart you built yours on a trailer) It's not hard to get someone to let you park in their backyard for a few bucks a month. Land isn't really an issue if you can put your house anywhere.
It important to know that you don't HAVE to be a certain way to be normal, or achieving or acceptable. There are choices in this life to be made. I'm sure there are hard things about living this way, but there are probably some really beautiful things too. And she's teaching her kids certain things about what is to be valued. Very cool.
Yes we are just in transition and nothing in life is permanent. You have created a beautiful living space that is functional and has style, I have built a shack/house in the forest bit by bit and appreciate the effort required to get it done.
I sold my $290,000 house and am typing this from the comfy bed of my '76 Airstream camper , turned tiny house on wheels. I only use about 1/3 of the money I make as a travel RN. It can be done
Maybe a silver-colored reflective tarp stretched across the roof with some ventilation room between the tarp and the roof would reflect the sunlight and prevent the house from heating up as much.
I am pretty sure she is still in it. Who would leave such a beautiful place like that and move into expensive apartment or buy a house with 30 year mortgage. Then, suffer your whole life. Unless one of the UA-cam viewer reported her to the local government, I am pretty sure she is still there.
vasanthmuthu Thanks, this is the first video I really got me looking into small homes and tiny homes with shipping containers. So an update as to what she has done since would be cool ya know?
I have seen this channel for a while now and this episode is by far my favorite, this lady is a special person, I wonder where she is now after all this years
At first, I saw a crappy little shack and thought her child should be taken from her for lack or proper parenting. After viewing the whole thing, I saw how honest and genuine this type of living was for her and her family. She created a loving and stable enough home and I thought she should be left in peace. Beautiful.
Its really nice..later you can put another container next to the other one and intergrate the middle with wood ,,frame it...and got wider space....poco,poco.... 'a prisoner to the banks' you couldnt have said it better.....I live similar on an island....vive the green hippies!
There aint nothing wrong with it at all,of course the structure is the easy part, where Im at the price of land is the big problem, plus theres the county I will have to bootleg in everything, but I think as long as Im not on grid theres not a whole lot they can do. .When I get land the shipping container will be my starter house, til I can afford a Home Depot shed with a loft, and then I will connect them. I want to get off the grid, and live a simple life.Good job lady, its a nice place to live..
I really enjoyed your video but most importantly the fact that you realize what is important for you and your young family. You think outside the box and you have your priorities in check. Not that it matters but I grew up in Argentina and I find your native country to be an amazing place.
This is great thank you Lulu for sharing your home with us and inspiring me to make something simple straightforward and make the most of this time ,,,so impressed that you sorted this out yourself ...I think I would be thinking about this for years before actually doing anything !
This is awesome!! Curious, how did she come across the land to settle on? where does the waste form the toilets go? is it connected to a waste disposal system?
She sounds like there is a happiness in her speaking. Wants simple things to keep her life clear and gives more time to be who she wants. We all could benefit from doing as she did. Live with what is considered the basics of comfort to give us more time to breathe and think.
"When you don't have money, you just get creative." She is 'rich' in talent, creativity, & enjoying life!
WELL said!!
dont forget the land the house is on
Indeed, sometimes I wonder how money can deprive us of creativity, since money can buy so many stuff. Kudos to this brave mother.
Someone please give her another container.. This reminds me of living in my last flat.. Have 2 you have what you need.

Loving this heroic mom🏆

Very impressive lady doing extraordinary things for her family! I'm WOWWED!
Fantastic! I envy you, what a beautiful home! Mucha clase, poca pobreza, mucha riqueza. Tu hija te recordará siempre!
im a single dad with only one kid to raise.it is very hard work.i have raised him myself for he last 13 years and he will be 18 this winter.never in truoble and a very nice person.this and all woman have my respect. giving your kids a place to call home is the hardest job you will ever love.i love how creative she has been with what she was able to find here and there.we should all recycle more "things" i like old stuff .it has personality
I watched the video and realized it was made in 2011. I would like to know how Lulu is doing now in 2016. do you have any updates on how she and her daughter is doing?
Fck its been almost 10 years.
She's probably married living in a big mansion.
@mike boultinghouse jesus christ man don't say things like that
@mike boultinghouse nice one Mike.
Oh my goodness it is already 2020!!!
She did a good job. Have you considered going back to see how she has progressed?
Ms. Lulu has wonderful creative ideas on building things. it's amazing how she transformed this compact home out of something so beautiful & humble.
This is many years old now...wonder how she is doing now. She is just the type of woman I wish my boys would bring home! Love her "high end tea drinker" line. It would be an honor to share tea with her. :D
wow i am a man and i don't think i could have pulled that off. This woman is a genious
what does you being a man have to do with anything?
genius*
I think what he meant was construction and heavy duty stuff, you wouldn't normally think of a woman.
but she is very strong, I would imagine being a mother makes any woman strong, same with being a father.
since you have these kids you would want to protect with your life and you would want to give everything you have for the sake of them,
i mean stereotypes right? People hate them but they're real. She's one of those people that leaves commoners in awe
to build something like this, and maintain a family of 5, whilst being a single mother
is nothing short of awesome
Then man up, stop acting like a white night!
That's a very nice compliment.
thats a great salvage yard everything fits so well. i have tons of admiration for this. i want to build a house. i hope it turns out like this
god damn! i love this woman, the way she thinks excites me...
+Mike Lucas I love comments like this. When somebody sees a genuinely cool person and recognizes them for how cool they are. I really hope you get to cross paths with her.. Really do.
😊
+Mike Lucas She truly is a very special woman. And I also think you are a very special person as well, for the simple reason of liking her ;-)
Cheering for ya mike to find her.. so what happened?
I like her positive attitude, and her life style.
Its been many many years, she keeps on inspiring me. Wherever you are Lulu, I wish you and you beautiful child the very best!
How do you find the land to do something like this? Im intrigued.
Where I live the city would no way let you live like that . I’m wondering if it’s reservation land ?
All about making connections with people
some states have counties with unrestricted land/building codes where you can build anything you want :)
@@TheJacLangheim It USED to be like that all over America! A homeless family could move into an abandoned home and claim it. If there were no complaints from the neighbors in the first 6 months, and you did something to make it more presentable, it was yours!
any updates on her? does she have a website?? beautiful spot.. ive watched this many times. :)
Absolutely great initiative on her part!
Love her will, creativity and attitude towards life.
I envy her! She is super smart, super creative and brave! Best of luck to her!
It's been 3 years now. Have you raised the bedroom ceiling? Did you connect the rooms so everything was under one roof? It would be fun to see a follow-up.
e
amazing! so pretty and airy and great. i'm currently looking at apartments and this makes me sooooo want to live off grid!
I don't think of her as a squatter. I think of her as someone who's sick of paying a mortgage that strengthens the fractional banking system that is designed to make most people poor.
AGENTARMES you don’t know what squatting means
mike boultinghouse moron
AGENTARMES
Don’t we all get tired of paying a mortgage. But we still have to have a home.
God Bless
she has only one daughter.. the other kids are probably their neighbors.
"material things we don't own them, we just borrow them. We hold on to them for just a while, eventually we just pass them on or give them away to someone else." 8:58
@mike boultinghouse So much hate... no wonder why your eyes cross lol
This ladys rich in a beautiful land setting your right im tired of paying high prices i want to do this god bless you lady.
Such an inspiring intelligent woman.
Applauses to my compatriota Argentina . She got the idea very clear , the enjoyment in life does not come in expensive things , but in the apreciation of the simplicity and creativity ...
This women is nothing less than inspirational. Wow *mind blown*.
Proof women can be independent.
dojistar Being sexist much? Who says women can't be independent? Why bring this up?
How did you take offense to that?
dojistar Who said I did? Why bring this up at all?
Petty......
+dojistar I would hardly say this is a touchstone for proof of that. Very few people, men or women, can manage this level of independence.
I'd say the fact that most women in civilized countries ARE independent might be a better metric...
It's really important that this lady and I get married as soon as possible.
agreed, me gusto su espanol tmb =)
***** How does she compare to the types you usually encounter?
I'm just curious 'cause I see 26 likes (marriage proposals) under BlueArmy's comment.
Sheltered people can be happy; some may just be sheltering pearls of wisdom this world has been hungering for. But entitled, shallow, judgemental, insecure divas are no one's cup of tea....
***** LOL!!!!
She is fine alone
if she love her home and her kids, whose to judge?
Yea, exactly and I am jealous in case you didn't notice. Her home looks very nice and fancy compared to my $100,000 crappy old home. I really hope stupid local government doesn't hackle her with "PROPERTY TAX." That's the worst thing that can happen.
I grew up with my parents slowly building their own brick house . i grew up on a building site.. sometimes i loved it.. other times I hated it.. but a learned so much. I feel confiident about building my own home
What a lovely simple home! And what a lovely family! Thanks for sharing.
I love this, I would love to be in tune with nature away from the materialistic things of life and be in tune with nature and my soul...
people keep talking about tiny house all day, but they forget to talk about "land"
If you're tiny house is on wheels(most are, if you're smart you built yours on a trailer) It's not hard to get someone to let you park in their backyard for a few bucks a month. Land isn't really an issue if you can put your house anywhere.
Exactly .
You should do an update of this Lulu's editted house! I'm so anxious to see her 'japanese tea' looking room and green house! :)
You have created a beautiful living space that is functional and has style, I have built a shack/house in the forest bit by bit and appreciate the effort required to get it done.
i crave every day to leave my "high pay" (can debate based on hours) job, get out of the rat race and spend more time with my boys...Well done you!
I sold my $290,000 house and am typing this from the comfy bed of my '76 Airstream camper , turned tiny house on wheels. I only use about 1/3 of the money I make as a travel RN. It can be done
elizabeth barrett I am jealous
elizabeth barrett how do you have internet?
Maybe a silver-colored reflective tarp stretched across the roof with some ventilation room between the tarp and the roof would reflect the sunlight and prevent the house from heating up as much.
I think we would all LOVE an update on what she has done since the video, if she is still in it.
With a false roof installed on top to absorb the sun rays and painting the container with a ceramic coating the house will be cooler .
Is there a recent video showing her progress and if she finished her green house, other "Japanese" style room, etc?
i definitely like the location. nice scenery
All I have is 30 years mortgage, surrounded by crappy neighbor's houses and run street to drive my car. :(
it's pretty desolate, wheres town?
Rita Doyle
its some where in California, Rita. Rita, you are beautiful as this lady is. Your husband must be taking good care of you.
Ty, yeah, somewhere in CA i get that but im thinking east of los angeles & south of barstow can you tell us?
Rita Doyle Absent of people, yes, but bleak and dismal? Heck no.
This is awesome!!
Curious, how did she come across the land to settle on?
where does the waste form the toilets go? is it connected to a waste disposal system?
Where is this in California?
This lady has such a beautiful soul you can hear her peace and calm in her voice. true happiness is found in the heart. I am so happy for you : )
She sounds like there is a happiness in her speaking. Wants simple things to keep her life clear and gives more time to be who she wants. We all could benefit from doing as she did. Live with what is considered the basics of comfort to give us more time to breathe and think.
