i honestly looked at one of these and then since i didn't see you endorse it or a direct video about it... it sits in my amazon cart... but now... Thanks again Scott!
I picked up two of these a couple months ago. I have one on my pedal board and one in my mixer rack. My pedalboard has an hxstomp with extra 2 button switch, a BTS500S-6, a dual channel direct box, the CME U6MIDI Pro, and a USB power supply. In my mixer rack, I hook up my XR18 and my laptop (for lights) to the CME U6MIDI Pro. Use a WIDI adapter on each of the CME US6MIDI PROs for the long haul connection. I also carry regular cables as a backup. I use BandHelper on an android tablet hooked up to my pedal board's U6 to send patch changes, light controls, XR18 changes, etc. These solved a big problem I was having trying to only use WIDI adapters and looping back from my tablet. It worked fine on everything but the XR18. The XR18 sends the same midi commands out when you move any fader, etc as it listens for to do the exact same thing.....so I got into a nasty loop twice setting up for a live gig when we first started using it. Using a true router/joiner/splitter solved the headaches. Definitely worth the purchase.
Great video as always, Scott. CME keeps putting out great stuff. I've been looking for something like this for controlling all the pedalboards we have on stage
I got this a few months primarily for MERGING (combiner) since most mergers were nearly the same price and this unit can do so much more! The software is simple but extremely powerful. I appreciate you showing some of the filtering, as I haven't used that yet. I do a "noisy" Yamaha YPT-400 (lots of MIDI chatter) and was hoping maybe to filter out some of the MIDI messages it sends (need to use MidiOX or similar to see what messages its sending). Another great review, I always learn something when I watch your excellent videos!!
Is it a coincidence that I'm literally on Amazon right before you uploaded this video to look for cheap midi splitter? I think not! Looking forward to learn something new on today's video!
Another great video on to take our performance control to the next level! I'm using BandHelper right now and reviewing what it offers as I consider StageTraxx3 as you've documented so well. Apple-only is a concern for my groups for now, but we may pull the trigger as our expectations grow and we find current solutions looking less elegant that what you've so graciously shared with us already. Cheers!
One other thing, if you plug the included USB to USB-C into a powered USB hub, which is attached to an ipad ... then when I enabled "advanced mode" in the software, you get an additional 3 USB IN(s) and 3 USB OUT(s) which you can also route, filter, merge alongside the 3 physical MIDI IN(s) and OUT(s) on the box.
I have found the USB connections only show up when using a good quality USB-C to USB-A cord, or a USB-C to USB-C. I've tried several that didn't work ... and actually those also caused the windows cme MIDI software to not connect either. So if you used the included cable (it's tiny) or a high quality cable, then it should work. I wonder if they made the included cord so short because of this. I just got it to show up on my ipad using a higher quality cord. The cheaper cord I had been using was causing the USB midi ports to not show on the ipad.
I think you've partially answered a question I have regards using Windows. If you use Mac, then you might not know about this. Unlike Macs, Windows gives exclusive use of a physical MIDI port to the first app that opens it. If you want to run 2 programs with input from the one MIDI port, you have to use a program such as loopmidi or loopbe to create virtual MIDI ports, and then a routing program such as midi-ox to copy the data from the physical port to the 2 virtual ports. My question is, with this U6MIDI can you split 1 MIDI in to 2 USB outs, such that on the Windows PC one program opens and reads USB-1 and the second program reads USB-2?
@@ababababeebababa It occurs to me to ask if the cables that you call "low quality" are in fact simply "charging-only cables" that don't contain the "data" wires?
To answer my own question, I received this info from CME Support: When you connect the U6MIDI Pro to your computer, from the single USB-C port you will get 3 virtual USB MIDI Port. You can use any one virtaul port for one music software exclusively on your Windows PC (not limite to physical port), so in total you can use 3 music softwares simultaneously. So what you understood below is correct: "On the Windows PC one program opens and reads USB-1 and the second program reads USB-2".
Thanks Scott for your useful reviews!!! You have been a big fan of the Behringer X32 digital mixer, but with new competitors like the Yamaha DM3 at a similar price point, it would be great if you could review it. Having actual faders seems like a big pro.
I’ll have to see if I can get it figured out haha. And if I WANT to do all of that. The corporate/wedding band it would be really nice to have my setup change the lighting. But with my 90s band, we pretty much just have “party lights” the whole time. The other band is the main one that can use all 3 (TB, ST3, lights), and that’s the one that plays the least. BUT it’s on my list for sure! Using this will be really helpful and will likely be the brains behind it
I was under the impression that this is also a USB MIDI interface, but you don't talk about that in the video, so now I'm not sure... I thought that you could use the USB C port on this as a USB MIDI in/out, so you wouldn't need the U2 MIDI USB interface like you're using with the iPad (although then the iPad would also be powering the U6, which would be another reason to use the U2 as well). That would also explain why the software shows 4 inputs and outputs, while the device only has 3 DIN inputs and outputs. EDIT: Another commenter said that it does indeed act as a USB MIDI interface, but not just one in/out, but a total of 3 USB MIDI inputs and outputs (plus the 3 "physical" MIDI DIN inputs and outputs). I was primarily planning on using this as a USB MIDI interface, so very useful info to know.

This is a good unit. However, there are some devices that do not have the ground pin grounded such as the Focusrite 18i20 or the HeadRush GigBoard, and may not work as expected.
@@ScottUhlMusic Yes, they do have the 5-pin midi in/out. I used a MIDI Processor (MIDI Solutions) between these devices and do not work. Used the Processor with a Quantum 2626 and Quad Cortex and works just fine. Looked into the specs for the Focusrite and the GigBoard and both do not have pin 2 grounded (or did not specify specifically) where the processor expects ground or shield on pin 2 to send/receive midi. You can go out of the DAW and into the U6 then two different outputs. One to Kemper then one to Hx stomp. Thats how I would do it. Make sure they are set to different channels
Scott: Is it possible to do midi mapping in this, so I can match a widi wind controller with a synthesizer by changing midi commands from the widi to something else the synth is expecting ?
Does the USB input support multi directional MIDI over USB? I'd be looking to run MIDI out from an e-drum module into MIDI in over USB on another module to combine drum kits. both modules have MIDI over USB, but only MIDI Out (not MIDI in) inputs.
Is it possible to have programable settings like: IF input1 get PC1 message THEN send by output 3 PC25 message. Is it possible to achieve by that device?
I’m new to MIDI and had a really dumb question.. can this be used to communicate with a DAW? I have an interface that’s a little older and doesn’t play well with Windows. All I really wanted to do is be able to send MIDI signals from a keyboard (Alesis Recital Pro with ONLY a USB A) to play sounds from my Akai Force (has MIDI inputs) which lines out into my monitors for the sound.. but eventually I wanted to use my DAW as a sound library that my Alesis Recital Pro could play. I noticed that my Korg DW8000 also sends MIDI signals in a type of feedback loop you also experience here.. I wanted to also use it simply as a soundbank and for synthesis. Can you help me sort out the best solution? Thank you.
This will work with basically any daw, yes. If you need a USB connection to your computer, look into this guy: ua-cam.com/video/_QpyLx_waZE/v-deo.htmlsi=KbaREoSM5p1otQT3

Hi man, great video!!! i have a specific question for a guru mind like yours. I just bought the U6MidiPro for this but I don't think it's gonna work. (The Thomann guy said i needed to buy this but it seems like it's not gonna do the trick). I need to go from a Midi keyboard to a CC change in my Quad Cortex. Meaning if I play a C1 for example, I convert that note to CC#35 (for example). Do you have any idea how I convert Midi notes on a keyboard to CC messages? Which device do i need for this? Anyway, you rock. Have a good one. Vinny
Interesting… that I don’t know. I’ve never seen one of those before. I don’t believe the U6 can do that, you are correct. Ableton I’m sure has a midi converter, but I don’t know of a midi converter box
Hi Scott or anybody out there who may be able to help with my problem, I would be so appreciative for any help. I have a CME U6 Midi Pro that I am trying to use to merge the CC messages from 2 M-Vave Chocolate midi foot controllers. I am doing this to give me a total of 8 foot buttons to press, to send CC messages to a Boss RC5 Loop Station. Both controllers work find in isolation without the CME U6 Midi Pro, so I know there is no problem there. However, when connecting the 2 M-Vave foot controllers to the CME U6 Midi Pro, no midi messages (lights do not flicker at all on the U6) are reaching the Boss RC5. The 2 M-Vave controllers are connected to the CME U6 Midi Pro via TRS (1/4") to 5 pin midi cables, to inputs 1 and 2. The Boss RC5 is connected to output 1 via a 5 pin midi to mini trs (1/8") cable. I have configured the merge in UXMidi Tools app, but no joy. I thought I may have a defective CME U6 Midi Pro, so I returned it and got another, but still the same problem, so obviously there is something, that I am doing wrong. Again, any help would be fantastic, as I am tearing out what little hair I have left.
Thanks for responding Scott, appreciate it. After some more midi study, I discovered my problem was that I was using a couple of midi cables that had weird wiring (not type A or type B). Tried my Type A midi cables that came with my Launchpad Pro Mk3, and presto it worked. Knowledge is king. Thanks again Scott.
Is there a way to manipulate the volume levels remotely using 2 devices for example so that the audio engineer can level the volume if necessary. it's possible? thank you!
@@ScottUhlMusic This is the reply I got back from CME support; Hi Karl, Thanks for your email. I guess you talk about the U6MIDI Pro. It has 3 virtual USB ports, there is no port 4. In early UxMIDI Tools software version, there is a port 4 displayed on the router page with no function, it is reserved for future product. But if you already use the v3.9 UxMIDI Tools, it will detect the connected hardware and display corresponding ports which you only can see 3x USB ports and 3x MIDI ports for U6MIDI Pro. Please refer to attached screenshot. In the manual of U6MIDI Pro, we explain it as below: In different operating systems and versions, U6MIDI Pro may be displayed as a different class device name, such as "U6MIDI Pro" or "USB audio device", and the name will be followed by the port number 0/1/2 or 1/2/3, and the words IN/OUT.
This is frustrating. It's useless to me if I can't route signals back from my computer to the hub via usb. Scott: Is it possible to do midi mapping in this, so I can match a widi wind controller with a synthesizer by changing midi commands from the widi to something else the synth is expecting ?
You mean something like changing from like CC 50 to CC 60 or a note? No, it’s not meant for that
@@ScottUhlMusic Do you maybe know of a hardware solution that will do that ?
Also, instead of input filtering, you could send the notes on a channel that only the receiving device used?
I don’t believe so
Does the USB input support multi directional MIDI over USB? I'd be looking to run MIDI out from an e-drum module into MIDI in over USB on another module to combine drum kits. both modules have MIDI over USB, but only MIDI Out (not MIDI in) inputs.
That I honestly don’t know. I would message them. They have been very helpful with responding. Either there or in the Facebook group
Is it possible to have programable settings like: IF input1 get PC1 message THEN send by output 3 PC25 message. Is it possible to achieve by that device?
Like changing the midi commands? No, I don’t believe so
I got 2 pc and two piano midi controller and a guitar midi.
Will this work to connect my 3 midi controller to record on any of the 2 pc I diced?
It should 👍
I’m new to MIDI and had a really dumb question.. can this be used to communicate with a DAW?
Great video and am about to buy. I have 4 keyboards...Just need to send control changes to 4 keyboards. None of them have midi thru. Whats the cheapest way to add one more out?
You can try this one: WIRELESS Bluetooth MIDI + MIDI Splitter - WIDI Thru 6 BT - Demo/Review
ua-cam.com/video/iWPTYBq0VdA/v-deo.html
2 in and 5 out with that one
I figured it out
But can the box run standalone on USB power only (without a computer)
Yes 👍
hi there nice video, can i use usb as midi in ? i want to use a drum machine an send midi from ableton, thanks
If I remember correctly, you can usb midi with this 👍 but it’s been a while since I did the video
Inquiry,
I recently rebuilt a 2013 iMac (i7-4770,16gb, 256 Nvme SSD, GTX 750m that I got local for a whopping $50! Although in the process? I totally broke the tiny Bluetooth connection.
Anyway, my interface has 5-dim midi in/out
My Fractal FM3 MkII Turbo, well it's got multiple I/O
My old Roland TD-6v V-Drums module that I'm using on my DIY A2E conversion drum kit only has 5-Dim midi in/out (optional thru)
My old school 61 key Casio CTK-53I keyboard, that I mainly use as a controller...
Also, has only 5-dim midi in/out.
My question is this...
What would be my best solution for using both the Casio keyboard & Roland V-Drum module merely as separate midi controllers within Reaper into VSTs like EZD3 and EZKeys? I'm thinking that the CME U6MIDI Pro just might do the trick.
Gigging mobility is currently not an issue, as I'm currently not performing.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Cheers!
Oh, I also have an old Alesis Midi Trigger I/O laying around I'd like to use. It's only got USB midi & a single 5-dim midi out.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Cme pro also makes the widi bud which is usb a that is a midi adapter 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic I legitimately was just at that option just now. Ha! The price is a bit higher than I was wanting to spend, but the fact that it’s capable of 16 channels?!
That’s huge!
For my Roland V-Drum module tho? I may just go with a $19 CME U2MIDI Pro cable adapter for now.
I know nothing about MIDI, but I want to start using it with my Line 6 Helix, Singular Sound Beat Buddy, and Boss VE-500. I want to use my Android tablet to control all the pedals via the Songbook Pro app.
Could I do this with the Bluetooth version, CME WIDI Thru6 BT
?
Yes I believe so 🤘
is possible that i use this with eventide h9? one i add a midi controller knob via midi port to control the parameter,, and get one midi for clock from daw,, and merge them together,, so effect could sync while i track to daw? thanks.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t 👍 I don’t own one, but if it takes midi it should work great
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks for your reply. from the specs 3x MIDI In and 3x MIDI Out
1x USB-C for MIDI transmission....do i always need computer or something plugged in? can i just plug only midi controller and synths drum machines??
is there a way to achieve same functionality with a software? I have multiple midi inputs and outputs going from my mac/pc and I want to filter, route, combine using software. Are you aware of such a software?
I’m sure there is, but I’m not aware of it
Very informative video Scott. what timing, I just bought the same unit to control HX stomp and 2 bass guitar pedals from my Boss ES5 switcher
Nice!! 🤘
@ScottUhI. Fer Reals?????? very cool - thanks. Do I reach out to you?
@ScottUhI. thanks for the update on scammers. However, keep up the great work on your content
Can this device reroute specific midi notes into other notes? In my setup I have 3 (nearly) identical basic electronic drum kits merged together in logic pro to make a unified kit. It would be nice to route the individual drum pads pre logic to different notes as they are competing for the same positions.
I don’t believe it can convert notes, no
@@ScottUhlMusic can you recommend a device or a program that can do this?
My guess is ableton can do that, but I haven’t used that before
this device can convert keyboard ranges to different midi outputs, but not note level mapping .... ua-cam.com/video/QVEfNhhspSk/v-deo.html
i wonder if there is a setup that lets you change presets on your hx stomp and lights playback with the same midi file
Yup! Just have to use different midi channels. Midi channel 4 for hx stomp and midi channel 5 for lighting for example. I just want mine to come out of the one controller, so this U6 will help a lot
@@ScottUhlMusicand do you use program change for both? Or how does it work?
It depends on what you are trying to control. Program changes or control changes. I go over that in this video: ua-cam.com/video/IoUtshlzCTo/v-deo.html
Hi Scott or anybody out there who may be able to help with my problem, I would be so
appreciative for any help.
I have a CME U6 Midi Pro that I am trying to use to merge
the CC messages from 2 M-Vave Chocolate midi foot controllers.
I am doing this to give me a total of 8 foot buttons to press, to
send CC messages to a Boss RC5 Loop Station.
Both controllers work find in isolation without the CME U6 Midi Pro,
so I know there is no problem there.
However, when connecting the 2 M-Vave foot controllers to the CME U6 Midi
Pro, no midi messages (lights do not flicker at all on the U6) are reaching the Boss
RC5.
I thought I may have a defective CME U6 Midi Pro, so I returned it and
got another, but still the same problem, so obviously there is something, that I am doing wrong.
Again, any help would be fantastic, as I am tearing out what little hair I have left.
That sounds quite complicated. I am available for private consulting. Links are on my website (in the description)
Is there a way to manipulate the volume levels remotely using 2 devices for example so that the audio engineer can level the volume if necessary. it's possible? thank you!
Volume levels for what? Sounds like you need more of a mixer than a midi device
@@ScottUhlMusic I mean to manipulate the audio levels of the app on 2 different devices while playing
@@ScottUhlMusic and that way someone else in front of the stage can correct the levels in the app if necessary
I'm assuming midi output 4 is the usb output?
Yup 👍 edit: guess I was incorrect actually, my bad
How are you getting it to show up? I'm on firmware v3.8 and I don't see any output 4 nor a variable to enable it. @@ScottUhlMusic
I'm also running v3.9 on the software. There's no reference to port 4 in the manual either.
@@ScottUhlMusic This is the reply I got back from CME support;
Hi Karl,
Thanks for your email.
In the manual of U6MIDI Pro, we explain it as below:
In different operating systems and versions, U6MIDI Pro may be displayed as a different class device name, such as "U6MIDI Pro" or "USB audio device", and the name will be followed by the port number 0/1/2 or 1/2/3, and the words IN/OUT.
This is frustrating. It's useless to me if I can't route signals back from my computer to the hub via usb. I can get midi time code from my beat buddy, through the hub and into reaper but for some reason signals can't flow the other way. I don't even have any filters on and I know the receive settings on the BB are good. I can't even get their support to understand my issue. @@ScottUhlMusic
Who presses all those buttons or is it automated? It’s cool to see what you’re doing but it’s way beyond my skill level. I have yet to get my UI16 on to Ethernet much less all the things you do.
Thanks for your help on everything!
You do have to program the morning star to send all those midi commands. This is definitely a more advanced midi video for sure!
Yesterday hit it on the money I'm trying to get some Lights
🌟🙌🏼
I saw this video in advertisements... is that normal or they are using your video without your concent?
I made this video, and then they hired me to make a 60 second reel for them. Thanks for asking! I love CME Pro, and I use there products all the time, and I was honored that they asked me
Why not connect the phone (StageTrax) wireless via the Widi Master? A single Widi Master can connect to more than one device (e.g., iPad and iPhone) ... with the caveat that those wireless devices cannot talk directly with each other
You can use multiple ones together? With Bluetooth? I don’t think that’s correct… but I could be wrong
@@ScottUhlMusic Yes. It's called groups IIRC
@@ScottUhlMusic You can use multiple BT devices with one Widi Master (or Widi Jack, etc.). IIRC it's called groups. The BT devices cannot talk with each other (only the Widi in/out).
Have you got a video to show....how to mention as many other videos as possible....
🤷 I gave you more info if you need it 👍
I wish behringer would get their shit together and just update their hardware apps lol. the other apps we have to use to make the system work are so damn ugly and unintuitive
Haha I use Mixing Station and I love it!
im here to learn how to setup the cmepro to merge midi. its software doesnt show any way to merge 2 midi ins to one output 🤕🤕🤕 You spend a whole lot of time telling about your setup IE mixers, talk back mic and so on. but not much about the HOW? to configure the cmepro6 unit which is why i'm here to find that out. so This video is useless for it's purpose
🤷 bye 👋
