One shocking difference between the two are the original does not have a sustain pedal, nor does it respond over MIDI to sustain. Something that shocked me when I was going into production with it. I never planned on playing the mini keys, they are excellent for sound design though and like the keys for that. But when applying my sustain from the remote keyboard, the original Minilogue does not respond. Both synths are a must buy for anyone making EDM, serious synths for that. I think of 4voice as a monophonic synth that can play legato and use them for solo play since you can't blend 3 or 4 voice chords together. The 4 voice is very versatile since you can play monophonic too, plus unison for a big mono sound. I also use them for building big synths in a sampler, by layering patches together and panning into a stereo field, need analog for that. I love the original natural aluminum so easy to see (with my painted knobs). I cringe when working on the all black XD, so hard to see, wish they offered it with natural color. Yea I bought both, had the original but wanted (needed) a synth that had sustain. These are so inexpensive I think having both is not too outrageous. I can have a true stereo patch when using both together, panning each too. These Minilogues act as my solo voice for my poly digital synths when the harshness of high register notes go into aliasing. Just some of the most affordable analog polys and could be in production forever with a timeless product. Korg was the game changer in poly analog, just as Artruria was the original game changer in mono analog (MiniBrute). Fantastic creations.
Peak and Pulse2 are better analogue "must haves" for EDM, in ma 'pinion. Funnzie! I haven't "seen you" in a while. I used to enjoy some of your synth jams, I am now remembering.
I spent a lot of time going back-and-forth before I picked the OG. I prefer the OG lever to the XD joystick. I like having the second full ADSR. I tend to prefer not having integrated effects because I'd rather choose effects separately. I'm occasionally tempted by the digital oscillator and polychain ability of the XD. But I always have to admit that those features just really don't justify the XD over the OG for me.
I totally agree about having a second ADSR. Also, the OG seems to allow for more subtle manipulation of the filter, which is everything when it comes to subtractive synthesis.
Right on time! I learned that only the Minilogue is truly analog, while the XD is running through ADDA due to its effects section even when that is turned off, is that true?
@@Jason75913 The point is, you’re not getting a fully analog signal path. If it doesn’t matter, then the sonic difference between analog and digital synths doesn’t matter either! ;)
@ weird if the little brother has it but the Minilogue doesn’t. I had the OG mini and now the Xd and the Xd has a latch feature but only for the arpeggiator. I find it super weird
Mark Tinley on Sonic Talk, some time 8 million years ago, called it “The Kylie Minogue” the week the OG synth came out. I could never unhear it every time the thing was mentioned since.
Great demo, thanks Woody. I prefer the Minilogue XD. It was hard to distinguish on which model you played the sequences, as you often had both hands on both instruments. I appreciated you had subtitles in the video or just had one hand at one Minilogue at a time. Kind regards, Thomas
I do wish my OG had the extra FX, although the analog delay has its own cool lo-fi gritty magic. One very typical Minilogue sound you played when demonstrating the fx, I thought sounded much silkier and transparent than on the OG. The should just go ahead and make a Maxilogue...
I still didn't understand, is there only delay in the analog version of the effects processors? I think that if you connect the same effects processor as your digital brother to this analog synth, the sound will be as it should be excelent. 👍
xd has digital effects, original only has analog delay. yes, connect the original to any multieffects and it will sound amazing, or connect it to korg nts and then it has the same effects available as xd!
Never understood why they didn't continue the old stereo component metal look of the original in the logue series. I would've picked up a Prologue if it was that beautiful steel look.
The XD can load lots of new fx and oscillator from fm to virtual analog. That’s a massive advantage as you get the equavalent of a dozen synths in one
Opsix can do all the same stuff minilogue can and more.
@@mdjey2 not at all, ones just FM and the others analog, and in the case of the cd, can be FM synth too

good shout on the sustain and thanks, this is indeed very useful when holding a chord or note and manipulating the controls.

They both sound nice, and very different.

Woody likes the big black knob😂😂😂😂
that does make sense he is gay
Once you've had black......there's no going back...? 😂
Beautiful and lucid review as ever! Excellent stuff thanks Woody. Hugs from Bournemouth. 😁 ♥️ 🎶 🎹
thank you! hope to visit there soon again!

no idea about that, somebody will probably tell us
And there will be ADDA stages on external effects.
What does that matter?
XD is proper analogue as well.

Nonsensical ad infinitum.
@@Jason75913 It‘s as nonsensical or sensical as the distinction between analog and digital synthesis. Nothing more nothing less.
Nice comparison.
I still cant believe that neither of the two has a simple „Key Hold“ function even today.
i haven't looked for it, but my little monologue certainly has that!

KYLIE MINOGUE XD
xD
Mark Tinley on Sonic Talk, some time 8 million years ago, called it “The Kylie Minogue” the week the OG synth came out. I could never unhear it every time the thing was mentioned since.
Can the FX be completely turned off on the XD? Would that make them sound closer? Great comparison 👍
yes, you can indeed do that and turn it into the original... kind of.

yeah thomas, good point, i noticed this myself, but forgot to add titles, but listen for the effects and you will know!
@WoodyPianoShack Thanks Woody!
Funny you feel the same way woody, the original somehow felt more solid and had some character
I currently have the XD but I've always preferred the delay on the original one, on the XD sounds different to me at least
You can get the OG for dirt cheap second hand nowadays!
Is it just me. But i only see them priced the same as a second hand xd.

another option, you could buy the $100 korg nts then you get all the xd effects, and the analog delay!

yeah, the brushed aluminium much prettier than the black
the best one is "korg wavestate"
unbeaten champ!
the rompler? nope
Auntie Log 🎉
LOL! Synths out of tune. JD08 and now the Minilogue, maybe it's the Sweden weather? (I really did laugh out loud :)
Doesn't the XD lack a high-pass filter?
yep! but adding reso in the filter cuts the bass, so you can use that in a pinch
you can add a new OSC that has hi pass filter
0:25 woody used the f word. I'm gonna tell!!! 🤭
haha, you might be surprised to hear I use it all the time... but usually don't make it to the final cut!
XD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you called the OG one "the Original XD" Nope there only ONE XD
