An ode is a poem, especially one that is written in praise of a particular person, thing, or event. Like Beethoven's "Ode an die Freude", today's European hymn.
That is exactly what it means in Dutch. Dont know why i didnt make that connection 😅. Maybe because of the English pronounciation. Thanks for this!
But in this song it is OD as overdose. Video has a wrong word ode. You can check it from Nightwish's own pages for lyrics.

Don't skip any because you have done other versions. Wacken is definitive. And the technique Emppu was using on the guitar is tapping. You hit the string down onto the fret to sound it instead of picking.
I am mostly doing it out of time constraints, but i might check out more versions of the same song.

Yet another Banger Track by them from the W.O.A. 2013.
As #pekkakarppinen brought up about the guitar solo he´s using multiple techniques than just basic "pick - usage" ; tapping, hammer ons, pull offs etc. Another factor which might have caught your ears and what you mentioned about ´harmonics´ comes from the bass line in the bottom. Same thing happens in many Emppu´s solo parts since Marko is practically trained Classical guitarist in his youth, so he knows how to make good base(with his bass) underneath into any guitar parts.
Nicely done män, again, and Keep On Rockin´ with them!

Least what I can do(as a Finn and a music fan) is drop a comment to these Nightwish reactions, onto any one´s channel...Since this ´boi´ hardly ever, practically never, subscribe to any channel, simply because there´s not enough hours in a day to watch every single reaction to this magical band. This is a break up song (death of love). I see the first part as the last straw. She does an anniversary dinner but the partner goes for 1 drink with the lads and ends up coming home at midnight with a McDonalds. The second part is the massive row prior to her kicking him out of the house. Incidentally the lyrics are wrong, it is OD as in overdose not Ode.

Tapping is an extended technique, executed by using either hand to 'tap' the strings against the fingerboard, thus producing legato notes. Tapping generally incorporates pull-offs or hammer-ons.
Steve Hackett used tapping already during his time in Genesis, in the seventies. Eddie van Halen made it very popular in rock/metal

50+ years of guitar playing here : Emppu is using a combination of standard alternate-stroke playing, 'tapping', and hammer-on figures.
It's not too hard to do, except if you want to play a nice melodic passage without the normal/excessive repeats of certain patterns (think : the old double lead work on Skynyrd's Free Bird, yawn)
Emppu also benefits from playing thru a rig that can provide a very 'clean' form of compression which is built into his pre-amp model.
A Compressor can (among other things) :
- - keep the max-amplitude of all notes at the same volume, making notes played with different force SOUND like they are at the same volume. (an essential element of the Country/Western Chicken-Pickin style of Chet Atkns, Greg Kock, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, et al)
- - A compressor can also be 'tuned' to create (or emphasize) certain harmonics on the leading/trailing edges of each maxed-out sinusoidal waveform and yield a distinct form of distortion. In this case, I think Emppu has the compressor early in his signal chain, followed by a nice metal-sounding pre-amp/amp model for additional distortion and 'chug' (a thick-sounding artifact hear at the beginning of each picked note in his rhythm work) and then maybe some EQ or notch filtering to remove annoying frequency-dependent noise-spikes.
- - lastly, a compressor can hold up the volume of a picked note and sustain it longer than the natural note would otherwise. Sometimes I think he uses the compressor for this, and other times he appears to us the natural interplay between the larger speakers stacks and his guitar pickups.
EXCEPT Nightwish is kinda known for having a low-SPL-level on their stage. The PA is the major sound source, with a few monitors (Tuomas has a couple bass-heavy monitors down by his feet, because he likes it that way) and each band member uses in-ear monitors for their band and solo-mixes).. in fact Emppu's "beer-coaster speaker cab" at far stage-left has one functional speaker right at pickup-level (waist high to an alpaca, lol) so he can walk up to it with a note ringing free, grab his Corona for needed rehydration, all while the feedback is created virtually handsfree.

The “scream” at the end is called a glissando, going from low to high and back, for classically trained singers this is an exercise to warm up the vocal cords, so Floor will do this probably every day before breakfast .

Emppu was doing a tapping technique brought into the mainstream by Eddie Van Halen. These days, it's more common. I believe something similar can be done acoustically in Spanish guitar playing, but I beleive the technique has differences. And Floor....yeah. That siren scream is still amazing, years later.

Poetic put down "double-faced carnivore" - two-faced animal. "Ode of lies" works just as well as "O.D. (overdose) of lies". Emppu's solo here is as good if not better than on the album. I looked it up, and in Norse mythology OD, or ODR, is the husband of the Goddess Freyja and the father of her daughter Hnoss. He is also known as the God of fury, rage, and longing.
