There was a department store in Tokyo that decided to celebrate Christmas. They decorated the store with several dozen Santa Clauses; NAILED TO CROSSES!
There are very strict rules in the UK about the right of workers to have a good work/leisure balance and many countries who do not have this find it a great inconvenience .It is not that people need to shop all day and night, what they want is the right to choose when they do it. But this means that others cannot enjoy time with their families or that places have to employ more staff to stay open and the price of goods increases for everyone ,then that is also an inconvenience
I'm a brit, and not religious. I like Christmas as a tradition to brighten up the winter a little bit. Also, the "Christmas spirit" of trying to be nicer to people than you normally would be is something I can support. It would be great if we could be considerate of each other all year, but one month is better than nothing. Happy Christmas
You’re looking happy and healthy Shizuka, it’s good to see! Once again great content and very interesting to know how Christmas is celebrated in Japan… actually, you also know more about the U.K. Christmas traditions than I do myself.! Keep up the great work.! I wish you and your family a fantastic Christmas!
I hope you try & have a wonderful Christmas this year, though I guess it's going to be difficult after the year you've just had. 😢 There are a lot of people who'll be wishing you well in your new/old life back home, & following your adventures online. Hi Shizuka. This video appeared again on my home page and I just had to re-watch some of your wholesome videos! I hope you're keeping well and enjoying your Summer. Miss you lots. Take care, friend
I would recommend reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens if you haven't, it really encompasses the Christmas Spirit that many of us in Britain feel at Christmas, and it explains why Christmas is such an important holiday for us. There are some good film adaptations too, The Muppets Christmas Carol is my personal favourite! But I would definitely recommend reading the book too. :)
Great video - we also have Christmas Parties in Primary/Secondary school before the Christmas holiday, students either volumteer or are selected to bring items to the party (food, drinks and plates for example) and the Teachers usually supply Christmas music (I really miss that). You made your Christmas crackers?! That's really awesome! 😎 Nice Christmas jumper as well!
I'm a gay guy so you know for sure there's no ulterior motives for me to say this, but at this point I have to scream it from the hilltops: HOLY MOLY you're so beautiful, truly! And so charming, and delicate yet so strong for what you've been through, and all around "lovely", too. The Universe is most definitely a better place for having you around. All your videos are a gem. Keep it up! (Btw I would love to see a video on the similarities between the two countries). Have a wonderful Christmas! 😊
When pre pandemic I was researching about visiting Japan over Christmas, I knew about the tradition of kfc in Japan for Christmas, but it never dawned on me everything would also be open as usual. I love the fact you take down your decorations straight afterwards, that would be my ideal 😂. Our celebrations start Christmas Eve and go through Boxing Day. Very interesting, thank you.
Great to see you again Shizuka! I spent one Christmas and New Year in Kyoto with my wife’s family, very interesting to see the differences. By the way we have Christmas cake and Christmas pudding, they are very different. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Keith
Christmas has come early for me as your uploading on UA-cam,so smiles 😃 all round 😀😄😁. Nice to see you back, my mother would always make a traditional Christmas cake but l don't think many people bother these days. The cake has the same ingredients as the pudding but covered with marzipan and then icing sugar 😋😜. Have a very happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.
Great video, as always Shizuka-san! And yes, that's a lovely Christmas tree! ;-) Many years ago, I took my daughter to Japan to stay with Japanese friends for Christmas & New Year, and we took various gifts from the UK, such as Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, and Christmas crackers. As we went to board the plane, I was asked the usual questions about items in my luggage, and then they asked if I had any Christmas crackers! I'd never been asked this before, and of course I did, so I said yes. Then they told me I had to remove them from my suitcase because of the gunpowder... or I could just remove the 'bangs' (the little cardboard strips containing the gunpowder), so my daughter and I pulled all the cardboard strips out of the crackers, put the crackers back in the suitcase, and they were allowed on the plane. When we used the crackers on Christmas day with our friends, we had to make the bang noise ourselves! But I didn't realise they couldn't be imported into Japan; I just assumed they weren't allowed on the plane.
I always find it interesting how some of the most patriotic people I’ve met are foreigners. I guess it kinda makes sense since they actually want to be here by choice rather than being born here. But it always makes me feel better and luckier that I live here when other people choose to be here. I always think to myself, what’s so great about the UK? But if people like Shizuka are here, then it’s got to have something good going for it
Hello Shizuka. I always enjoy your video's. Am looking forward to the next. Take care over there in Japan. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and warm greetings from the UK
I recently started following your posts. Your approach to moving to a new culture reminds me of the chance my wife took some 45 years ago by staying in the US and marrying me after finishing grad school. For years she worked for an audit firm and visited many small towns where Asians were seldom seen. But her humor and willingness to try new things made her popular with everyone. At our age now, we are like the “folks who live on the hill.” Sorry about your loss and you have my best wishes for your future.
I love your videos! I am from the UK, and it's easy to overlook the positive things that happen here - thank you so much for showing the nice things about us, and I am so glad that you feel a part of our little island 🙂
That Christmas jumper is rocking Shizuka! If you truly miss the Christmas pudding we serve here in the UK I'll gladly trade for some of that Japanese Christmas cake. That looks incredible! I'd still cover it with custard and brandy though :). Happy holidays to you and best wishes for the new year x
Thank you for your insight into Christmas in Japan, I love the look of Japanese Christmas cake, but then I love trifle too😃 Thank you for your videos, have a happy Christmas.
Really good to see regular posts, and posts which make me reflect on my own country and British traditions. As a boy, growing up in Australia I often spent Christmas on the beach, which now seems strange to me, but KFC in Japan may be one I'll have to try, especially if I can have a tub of Potato and Gravy, I stupidly really miss this from Australia! Nice to learn a little about Japan and all things Christmas, and hopefully one day, you will get to experience Christmas in Britain once again, I am sure you will be welcomed with open arms, and a cup of tea or two!
Love watching these videos. I was watching a walking tour around a Christmas Market in Tokyo and was surprised to hear all the usual Christmas Carols that we in the UK are familiar with. Wonderful to see all the decorations on the trees. I have always had an artificial tree although I must admit I don't bother much anymore. But then my Christmas Day present this year will be listening to a recorded acoustic concert from Japanese Rock Band, Band Maid. The World is becoming smaller. Have a great day whatever you decided to do.
The U.K. also has a tradition to bring the New Year into a household. People seem to follow the lines of going out of the back door of a house a few minutes before midnight to let the old year out, then being let in through the front door just after midnight to let the new year and a fresh beginning, in. This is done whilst holding coal, possibly a glass of alcohol. Some people carry food as well, all representing prosperity and health.
I love the look of that Christmas cake, I’d better start baking my own. I spend time with family over the festive season, with a traditional Christmas dinner. Great video!!
I wouldn't say Christmas is so much strongly associated with Christianity anymore. My parents and I aren't religious, but Christmas is always fun to celebrate. It's an old pagan festival, and Roman Saturnalia festival.. and just a good time before the end of the year to relax and celebrate with family. Cheers
Happy Christmas to you Shizuka , I am from England and even though I am raised a Christian I do not fully celebrate Christmas....I do enjoy the time of year but I do not get a real tree or put decorations up....I like to go out for a walk on Christmas day as well as New Years Eve night....start walking New Years Eve at night, keep walking until the start of New Years Day 🙂 I sometimes go to my friends house and we share a few games, dinner and just generally relax. Regardless of how much you celebrate , I wish you love and warmth 🙏 and thank you for your content
Love this video, so happy your back doing videos, Never knew about KFC at christmas in Japan but was delighted to learn it started same year I was born LOL. Hope you have a lovely Christmas and one day get to have a full English roast again in the UK.
Christmas was Hi-jack by the church, its true name is Yule Tide, Yule tide lasted from the 21st Dec to 6th January and the celebration is a pagan, Yule tide was a time of peace, no battles would take place during this period, The christmas tree, holly, ivy, mistletoe are to celebrate Mother Nature and the Greenman, The early Christian suppressors, banned Yule tide, no one was allowed to celebrate this period for a number of centuries, but the people carried on in secret, In the end the church see that they could not stop the people so, they allowed it under their controlled and named Yule Tide' Christmas knowing to well people over time will for get what it really was about, the Tree was reintroduced by Prince Albert (Queen Victoria German husband), In 1914 the christmas truce saw the last time there was to be no battles on Yule tide, when the British open fire on British troops and German troops having a bit of fun in no-man-land, the turkey became popular in the 1940s, an American idea introduce. And then in the 1980s, Christmas became highly commercialise. Shizuka have a great Yule Tide. :-).
The worst thing about Christmas over here is there everybody overspend is just for one day. I actually just had this conversation with a friend just last night (December 10). I really don’t like this time of year but then I don’t like dates affiliated with special occasions anyway.
May I add, regarding the fir tree, that there is a problem. The leaves/needles fall off during those two weeks and you continue to find them for months after! I haven't had one since I left my parental home 40 years ago... I think I still find some. 😂😂😂 Hahaha.
I just wanted to echo the sentiment of so many others here, it's good to see you seemingly doing so well, and back posting videos. Oh and Christian claims to Christmas are tenuous at best, it's the Pagan festival of Yule, that Christians repurposed to celebrate the birth of their saviour who was most likely born some months later. An early form of recycling.
UK and Japan is definitely moving together as allies and friends, you're a shining example of our growing affection which is above anime but real cultural exchange. Ps I love ya life you
I'm not religious, but Christmas was still celebrated when I was a child. (I think it was originally a pagan festival that was adopted by the Christians.) Japanese Christmas cake seems a much better idea than the traditional heavy fruit cake with marzipan and icing that we have in the UK! I rarely eat that because it's just too much on top of Christmas dinner and other rich Christmas foods.
Christmas wasn't originally a pagan festival, no, but it Did kind of absorb a couple. When Christianity was spreading, it was figured out that it was a lot easier to get people to convert and involve themselves in the new traditions if they didn't have to entirely abandon what they were used to, and holidays tended to fall in the same part of the year regardless of religion due to being ruled primarily by the local cycles of weather and crops. So Christian holidays would be intentionally celebrated on the same day as a local celebration of sufficiently similar nature (this was later standardized more, mind you) and incorporate any local traditions that could be repurposed or at least stripped of any conflicting elements. So while Christmas is its own thing, it did end up displacing traditional winter solstices, and the celebration of Christmas did end up collecting a lot of pagan odds and ends (Santa is an amalgamation of a Turkish saint and the seasonally relevant depiction of oden(?), for example... Though the modern version was then rather heavily refined by coca-cola's marketing department several decades back). Easter, on the other hand... well, It's basically Jewish Passover, plus a few bits, at it's core (that's also why the date it's celebrated on moves around so much, as both are tied to the Lunar calender, rather than the solar one we use for everything else)... but the vast majority of Everything associated with celebrating it, including its NAME, is taken from a festival held at the same time of year in Europe in worship of a pagan fertility goddess
Christianity vs. Christmas: two points - a mid winter festival was celebrated throughout Europe long before Christianity, sometimes called Yule, and of course the Romans had Saturnalia. Christians took over and re-named this traditional festival. Nowadays many people in the UK are not Christians but still celebrate on the 35th of December. It's become more of a celebrations of consumption and commerce.
Ah, so that's what Japanese Christmas cakes are like. I've wondered for a while, now I know. They sound really nice actually. My family doesn't do Christmas puddings any more. We used to, but we found them to be quite heavy and filling, which doesn't go down well when there's all the other Christmas food to eat as well. We have a nice Sherry Trifle instead. It's lighter, it's fruity, and still warming thanks to the Sherry included. I can't imagine working on Christmas Day. I work in retail, so I know how busy shops get around Christmas time. I'm working Christmas Eve this year and I'm already dreading it. On the plus side, the shift ought to pass by quickly. But working on Christmas Day? Yikes. Though I don't really do anything at Christmas anyway. That's a downside to working in retail here. When Christmas things start hitting the shelves at the end of August, you just want to get it over and done with by the time it arrives. It was interesting to hear about the history of Christmas in Japan. I'd already learned some of these details, but I didn't know much about how or when it came to Japan.
Love learning about other cultures and what they do round Xmas. Does or did Japan ever celebrate anything round the time of the shortest day of the year?
That is an interesting question! Apparently, Japanese people eat squash and take a bath with yuzu on the winter solstice. But I didn’t know the custom until I googled it.
your videos are always so nice, and you have such a lovely attitude! personally, me and my family don’t really celebrate christmas but a lot of the time my mum likes to cook something really special and we will all enjoy a movie together. it is very cosy :)
Boxing Day might be a shopping day in larges cities. However, it is a day for a long walk in the countryside for many. Perhaps also visiting close friends.
Wonderful Shizuka 🎄🎁 Christmas with sister and her family Lovely food - teenager's enjoying the festivities .... Wish you were here too ... All the best 2022 🎉 xx
Most people in the uk don’t go to church but they still celebrate Christmas (which is originally a Pagan holiday)
There was a department store in Tokyo that decided to celebrate Christmas.
They decorated the store with several dozen Santa Clauses;
NAILED TO CROSSES!
Glad to see you posting regularly. Hope you're doing well, Merry Christmas
I will be spending Christmas with my family and New Year with my girlfriend who's visiting from Japan 😁

@@laurencefraser Alas not true. The Winter Solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years. Stonehenge in the UK is testament to that.
Merry Christmas Shizuka and a better new year. You will always be welcome in the UK.
Good to see you posting again. I hope you are well and happy. Merry Christmas 🌲
I loved the out-takes- Brilliant ! Merry Christmas to you Shizuka and your family .
It’s the 12th December and you’re already rocking Shizuka 😄 God Bless 🙏🏻❤️🇯🇵
Sherry trifle sounds great!
I've never tried Christmas pudding.
I'm planning to import it from the UK.
I'm excited 😁
Really enjoyed the video, at Christmas I am going to my sister's house with family assuming we are allowed Christmas this year
Hope you had a relaxing Xmas ... well researched, informative & entertaining, Shizuka
Great to see you making videos again, hope you are feeling OK and have a merry christmas!

Boxing Day might be a shopping day in larges cities. However, it is a day for a long walk in the countryside for many. Perhaps also visiting close friends.
