Glenn's picking style already had some nice attack and dynamics back in the day of things like The Eagle Has Landed, but the improvement is really clear.
100%. I noticed it straight away on the Ampknob video. The right hand has really tightened up and everything sounds a lot more controlled and fluid. Great stuff. 👍🏼🎸
I'm really loving how these big companies with crazy unaffordable amps are making their amps available for the masses. I wish I had this sort of thing when I started playing guitar.
Crunch Mode with a good Tubescreamer would be killer. The fuzz on the other distortion channel is a little much for me but still absolutely usable. Great demo Glen.
From my experience, tubescreamers color the sound in an undesirable way. I think I agree with the person who said a boost pedal like a Klon would be more ideal.
When you cleaned it up, it really nailed some Nirvana vibe. When you engaged the Deep option, you could tell it is solid state. No comment on right hand technique. Have an ass-shaving good time, GGGGLLLLLEENNNNNN!!!! Thanks
This is the first time a solid state amp tone has made sit up my my chair and say "Holy shit!" this is the tone that I'm looking for. Seriously amazing.
Which is nuts because most of the lunchbox amps were full tube amps when this trend started. Orange Tiny Terror, Vox Nighttrain, Jet City JCA20, etc. And we're starting now to see hybrid amps and solid state amps using JFETs. Solid state amp tech has really gotten so good in the last 10-15 years.
Mike Soldano lives locally here in the Seattle area. I've had the pleasure of playing a few shows with him when he was playing pedal steel. Super humble and kind guy. This was probably 8-10 years ago. Way back then he was already trying to make quality affordable options for everyday people. He had a deal with Jet City Amps making affordable tube amps. In talking with him you could tell he genuinely loved music and musicians and wanted to make quality gear accessible.
I’ve always wondered who rolls up to live gigs with a tube Soldano full stack and a custom Les Paul. That’s like displaying a stack of $13,000 dollars in front of a room full of drunks, druggies, antisocial psychopaths, or jealous haters waiting to “accidentally” spill their beer into your speaker grill. And if you don’t want to risk the luxury gear at a gig, is it really worth considering it “professional” equipment? Give me a ‘90’s Carvin 2x12 with a Metal Zone, a red Charvel from a pawn shop, tell me i suck and spill your piss beer all over my gear, and I’m still sleeping like a baby later that night 👌🏻
So I have a carvin vintage 50 head, carvin birch 412 cab, heavy as hell. That rig sounds sweet. I got 500 in it, used, near mint. So I run that now, using the mini's preamp. I'd put it up against any slo or avenger. The tube pwr amp of the carvin made that mini come to life. Fantastic!
I've been enamored of Soldano amps forever. I'm a huge fan of Heart and Howard Leese was one of their first artists. Of course, as a basement hacker I never could justify the cost of getting one for myself. Might have to pick one of these up.
Hey man! I appreciate you and have a great time working with recording studio owners since I have learned from your videos, that my band mates are a holes! I keep them in check and don’t waste the engineer’s time and our money is put to use! I will pick mini up too!
Haven’t watched you in a while but man your playing really goes very well with the sounds you are getting out of that little Soldano. Great playing, Glen!
I'm going to pray for a Lee Jackson Metaltronix M1000 mini head to be an actual thing. This one sounds great, tons of saturation and then some, just like the old Soldano of yesteryear.
Glenn, your demo is the first that makes this amp sound... great! Literally every other demo of this and the rest of the little mini high-gain heads sound pretty bad to me, they sound fizzy & cheap, but you've chosen an excellent speaker cabinet to combat the harsh high end, love that tone!
Glllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnn!!!! Awesome, review, and dare I say, your riff at 6:46 at almost one in the morning here in the humid, soupy-aired swamps of Florida had me belting out “Whiskey woman don’t you know that you are driving me insaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannne!!” all over the house!! Lol
I'm an old school tube snob--these mini heads have that "sound", but more importantly, the "feel" of a tube amp. With the feigned "tube shortage" (much like gas, there is no shortage, just greedy tube companies wanting moolah), this is a great option. 30 watts is plenty for live situations if the cab is mic'd.
When I was using a Marshall DSL and 1960A cab I always got my `proper heavy` tone through the crunch channel, set it to moderate amount of crunch and then used a Tube Screamer pedal set to just a touch of overdrive and passed that on to a valve preamp pedal like Laney Ironheart or Seymour Duncan Twin classic and that was where I dialed things up if needed to get my fave thrash tones or beyond ........... overall I could achieve a very articulate and clanky chugger sound which was my most used tone ......... usually modeled after Gary Holt`s tones from Exodus
now I`m doing that sort of thing in my small home studio in a more compact form by using just the valve preamp from an Orange Micro Dark ( by tapping into the insert out on the back to bypass its little solid state amp ) and then passing that on to an old Rackmount Valvestate Pro 120/120 power amp which then goes on to either a 1 or 2 speaker Cab that I made that have either the same speaker as they use in a 1960A cab or 2 speakers that they use in a 1960AV cab ...... and I still use the tube screamer on low settings too ............. and the result = still an articulate but crushing sound even at low vols ..................... smokin`
These mini amps are amazing. I use Joyo Zombie 2 with Torpedo captor for silent recording. Sounds great. By this demo this one looks like a great amp as well.
I think this one sounds better than the other ones I've seen so far. The mini BE and Diezel honestly don't sound very good in the demos I've seen but this one is pretty cool. I wonder how it would sound through a tube power amp.
I guess you could run your pedals through the effects loop, and use an AB switch to get a clean tone with loop only. I would have liked to hear it with an OD pedal. This is a nice amp.
I have never thought of the Soldono 100 as a "metal" amp (even though EVH, etc...), because the first person I heard/saw playing one was Warren Haynes. I guess he's kinda metal since he did play on Stare Too Long by COC... 🤷🏾
COC is a great band, saw them in February and met Pepper and Woody, they were really chill dudes. I believe I saw Gregg Allman play through one as well at some point.
Great video as usual, Glenn, but gotta say, gracias for the INSPIRATION! I've got a lil Dean Vendetta with high output Humbuckers from The Fret Wire that I keep down a whole step in D standard, and your chuggin has inspired me to go pick it up and see what kind of original, heavy riffs I can come up with! -Christian Key (The Budget King)
Hej Glenn! I have seen you demo and review a lot of cool gear on the affordable side. Myself being a sucker for the old school Marshall sound, I'd love to see you review one of those smaller tube amps they have been putting out lately (something like the Origin, the Studio Series or the smaller DSL amps), I tried a couple and think they are quite interesting and I think it would make a nice video for those of us more into the "old school rock/metal" type of sound. Keep up the good work! Cheers from Italy.
@Text Me On Telegram @SpectreSoundStudios Screw off. You are really still doing this after being called out on Glenn's video about it on this very channel? Smarten up, pal.
That and a full size would be awesome! I thought this sounded pretty muddy but that could be due to a number of factors, my old tired ears included! I adore the Neural DSP Soldano, never played a real one. For $250, it sounds pretty great though!
lol "solid state version of a tube amp" Holy shit I've been sent back in time to the year 1998 and I'm back in Guitar Center looking for any solid state amp that doesn't market wank about "sounds just like a tube amp!" That Mini amp sounds SO transistor-y, I FUCKING LOVE IT. I'd run through a mono 31 band eq and start killing freqs top-down until that hiss goes away from the palm mutes. The new sounds are in transistors anyway. And software. Of course my software. . . I can't turn off the Soldano sim. It sounds so fucking good. Still prefer my Stage 112se for transistor amp overall. So much I bought 2 for left/right. They can power externals so I have them powering the 12s and 15s. Also loved how Fender puts in pictures of amp settings to go for to get you in the neighborhood of different sounds. Was anything like that in there?
Would appreciate a mini all-tube version, 20-30 watts. This sounded nice on the super high gain and I think you could play with the breakup on the crunch channel to cop some decent ACDC tones. No clean to speak of though...that is why we need more amps. Great demo, and Eff You, Glen! Keepin it clean for Auntie Sue.🙄🙄🙄
Also just putting it out there since we know your right hand has gotten stronger I wanna see you do some punk riffing, you know what I mean same notes just bounce off the string on the 1 and the 5 in 8th notes. Palm mute the rest, bounce for the best!!
Hey Glenn! I love your videos! (Even though I'm primarily a bassist) Your playing is really good, I like it a lot Better than I can play I have a question Would you have any recommendations for a good bass amp, combo or speaker and amp separately around the 400$/400€ range (or cheaper!) Currently I have a cheap 15 watt amp which is not good Cheers and thanks for reading!
Great demo Glenn. Some impressive tones for the money. You’ve sold me on it. I Just ordered one from Sweetwater for $249 🤟. I’ve always been a huge fan of the SLO 100, but as a bedroom player with a mortgage, I could never justify the cost. I’ve been running a Mesa 50 watt Rect-o-verb for years, we’ll see how it sounds through a 1X12” Rectifier extension cab 🤞
Mine should be here this Thursday 8-4-2022 Have big plans for this baby. BTW. That 4000$ Soldano Wow When I was looking to Buy one it was more like 6000$. 15 years ago. Lol
How does it sound with one of those spectre high res IR's? Oh that's right WE DONT HAVE THEM YET!!!!!! I want my high res coffee cab with fredmans on the v30 and k100, fricker!
You know what would be a good test, a blind mixing test: Do you put more effort into mixing/working on recordings done on gear you perceive to be good because you feel like you can get more out of it so you actually try?
Ok. Now I’m going to have to check out this mini soldano for myself. Damn. Now I might be getting myself yet another piece of new gear. Thanks Glen! Lol.
Reminds me of the Jet City Heads. I believe they used a Soldano preamp. They’d get a touch fizzy at the highest gain settings. Cool little head, for sure
@@InTheSh8 wow. Did you just jump in my ass about the Jet City amps? I had a JCA-50, and loved it! Took pedals great, but it was top end fizzy. That’s just the facts. I wasn’t talking shit about JET City amps. For the money, they are fantastic for live playing. I ran mine through a four cable line 6 multi effect into a Marshall 1960DM-b cab. However, instead of the jet city, i changed up to a Carvin Valvemaster 100 head, which took pedals like an old Hiwatt. Then i ran an old school board with boutique Skreddy gain, fuzz, phaser and echo pedals. I also had an old DOD EQ and a boss chorus. I found the cleaner amp was a better platform for pedals, and it was so loud i could never turn it up past 3 for fear of blowing my cab. The Jet City had its limitations, as the louder it got, the more top end sizzle. It got almost fuzz box fizzy. But i liked the amp. It was good. Now, if you want a SS amp that will make your head blow up, check out the fender London reverbs from the 80’s. Those things are amazing. 5-band Eq, Jensen speakers, all around dirt dealer.
Excellent review Glenn (and as we all keep saying…a dramatic improvement on the chops 🤘🏻). Gonna peep your Diezel vid now as well. Not sure if you’ve addressed this previously, but when you are choosing speakers to load your cab with, like the mentioned Revv and Celestions, is there a consideration to what you load on bottom vs top of cab or no real reason to get that pedantic over it? Thanks so much!
Sounds kind of OK, but the problem for me is that it's missing that trademark Soldano "zing" that comes from the cathode follower (or so I'm told). I think...if it had any other badge on it, it would be a great little practice amp; the Soldano name on the front invites unfair comparisons to properly legendary amps. The unfortunate fact is that I can probably get something that sounds closer to a Soldano from the HX Stomp I paid a similar amount of cash for.
I can't seem to change the "channel" from the Soldano sim on Amplitube 5. It just sounds so damn good. Never heard a real one to compare to unless it was on a recording.
Hey Glenn, do you have any thoughts on the Hempbacks? I"ve been thinking of maybe throwing one in my 4x12. But, I can't seem to find much info, or reliable sound tests for them.
i know this would be a super late video to do, but mini amps seem to be really good for bedroom players and such (Duh) , BUT! Have you ever considered checking out the Marshall DSL1 head? Its a 1 watt all valve amplifier that ive been really curious about. I would love to know what you would think of this small amp!
Speaking of "affordable Soldano", i bet you have heard about the "Soldano-designed" Jet City, just wanna know what's wrong with them since you don't seem to have them on the show yet (people mostly attribute them to the fairy dust and unicorn fart combinations that are tubes lmao).
@Lars Norberg they were discontinued in the last few years. Great amps, just lower build quality and QC. Will likely hold their value in the used market imo
@Lars Norberg Not slo it was the Hotrod 100, Astroverb 16 for the little 20 watt Jet City originally then they started modding things. I don't think they have ever done a true Slo-100 clone. This little mini-amp despite the good sound and Soldano Badge is not one either, Solidstate tone is great for metal (so tight).
Glenn, this may be a total newbie question but I’m curious about mixing a 4x12 with a 1x12 and what mic types to try when doing so. I’ve been trying to get my own unique sound and with a Helix I have the opportunity to try all kinds of shit. The problem of course is too many options. Each cab lets you choose so many factors I just don’t know where to start. So I’m leaving most everything set to default except the actual cabinet and possibly microphone type. What I’m not familiar with is the sonic properties of a 1x12 vs a 4x12 or even if that’s worth a try. If so what 1x12 would be a good fit? Thanks for everything, you’ve really helped me out with your videos and tutorials. It’s much appreciated.
@@michaelsnydermusic definitely a scam, if Glenn was giving away things, he'd just use one of his current accounts instead of making a new one. Happened with a band I follow a few weeks ago, too...
@@hatempire if you have a moment please report them too. I should have clicked the profile earlier. They did this all over this video to other people too.
Let's hail the era of the solid state mini head, for it has FINALLY arrived! P.S.: Sorry, I've had tubes, I've carried them and gigged with them, but we are half way through 2022, it's time to move on.
@@dingusfuzzklonnkt2755 give the tech a few years and some R&D money and it will be. Also, can you seriously tell me your audience can tell the difference? Cause for someone who plays for a living that’s what it actually comes down to.
Truth! The "Nothing is better than a tube amp" mentality is, at best, a gatekeeping factor that prevents people about knowing awesome cheap gear (Joyo Bantamp, Orange Micro Terror, that really tiny 50w head from Vox, this new Soldano and the list goes on)
It seems like you have a distortion/overdrive pedal on that you disengage at 3:33 while you set the master level before playing clean...or maybe you change to the neck pickup...I can't figure it exactly
Glenn’s getting better at playing let’s all give props to the man who makes our shit sound better
Ty!!
True! I’ve noticed it as well!
I couldn't believe the price when i saw it Glenn, props to Soldano for giving a shit about about the working class!
Slo's crunch channel traditionally works better with a Klon type pedal. I'd like to hear if this one is an exception.
Sounds like a great bedroom doom/sludge setup to me, hell I'd use it for a practice space if I didn't feel like bringing my beta lead.
Compared to most other "lunchbox" amps, this sounds fantastic. Less fizzy than most.
Much better than the other solid state lunchbox amps but I think the orange micro terror is better for cheaper imo.
Orange and Marshall make tube amps in that price range that are very hard to beat. But hey, it's the cheapest Soldano amp ever !
Agreed fellas!
The zombie isn't fizzy lol
Which is nuts because most of the lunchbox amps were full tube amps when this trend started. Orange Tiny Terror, Vox Nighttrain, Jet City JCA20, etc. And we're starting now to see hybrid amps and solid state amps using JFETs. Solid state amp tech has really gotten so good in the last 10-15 years.

Ok. Now I’m going to have to check out this mini soldano for myself. Damn. Now I might be getting myself yet another piece of new gear. Thanks Glen! Lol.
Awww... It's so small and cute!
can you compare the mini vs the real deal? Love to hear the differences :)
I second this! I'd love to hear isolated tracks vs. in a full mix.
Nice thing is, you can impulse buy these amps and not hate yourself for doing so.
Sounds just like another solid state amp - pedal into PA.
Props to the band. That sounded tasty.
I love this drummer man...
I really like the rhythm tone on the full mix. Sounds ThiiCCC. Great for Death/Doom i think
that sounds killer. hearing the bleed through really gives a good idea what it's cranking out.
I laughed so hard when i saw the knobs went to 11. Classic!
that snare tho!
That demo was sweet as fucccckkk
Just found your channel ... Refreshing to say the very least fella .. sound as a pound kidder 👏👏👏👏 cheers 😁
@@InTheSh8 fair enough. Thanks for the clarification
Proof that a high end company can create a decent solid state amp at an affordable price. Take note Line 6 and Marshall!
I was expecting this to be at least a grand. Wow!
Me: "Mum I want this SOLDANO amp!"
Mum: "NO we have a SOLDANO amp at home!"
The SOLDANO amp at home....
Yeah, really isn't that great xD
Sounds kind of OK, but the problem for me is that it's missing that trademark Soldano "zing" that comes from the cathode follower (or so I'm told). I think...if it had any other badge on it, it would be a great little practice amp; the Soldano name on the front invites unfair comparisons to properly legendary amps. The unfortunate fact is that I can probably get something that sounds closer to a Soldano from the HX Stomp I paid a similar amount of cash for.
"or so I'm told" tells all about "your" oppinion.
I can't seem to change the "channel" from the Soldano sim on Amplitube 5. It just sounds so damn good. Never heard a real one to compare to unless it was on a recording.
Love that crunch!
Hey Glenn, do you have any thoughts on the Hempbacks? I"ve been thinking of maybe throwing one in my 4x12. But, I can't seem to find much info, or reliable sound tests for them.
I've seen a few amps come out recently where "the numbers all go to eleven". Nice homage to Spinal Tap there
i know this would be a super late video to do, but mini amps seem to be really good for bedroom players and such (Duh) , BUT! Have you ever considered checking out the Marshall DSL1 head? Its a 1 watt all valve amplifier that ive been really curious about. I would love to know what you would think of this small amp!
Mix sounds dope af
Great review Glenn.
I thought I heard some Victim of Changes at the 6:45 mark.
@@nubnubnubbin makes lot of sense.
@@nubnubnubbin incorrect. the original lineup is no longer available but they started a "custom" line a few years ago and are still in production.
He talked about Jet City amps a few times, and quite elogiously ;)
@Lars Norberg Not slo it was the Hotrod 100, Astroverb 16 for the little 20 watt Jet City originally then they started modding things. I don't think they have ever done a true Slo-100 clone. This little mini-amp despite the good sound and Soldano Badge is not one either, Solidstate tone is great for metal (so tight).
Holy shit, this thing could be the deal of the year for metal players. That good a sound at that price?
Do you think that this amp would be loud enough to play with a full band with a 2x12
@@hatempire thanks my friend, I figured. I just wanted to make sure before I reported them.
@@hatempire if you have a moment please report them too. I should have clicked the profile earlier. They did this all over this video to other people too.
Just what the tube shortage ordered. Nice. What guitar are you playing today, Glen?
Soldano mmm that sweet sweet saturation, who needs cleans with grit this good!
I need clean... So for me it is 50% amp. Like all Soldano amps. Jetcity had the same problem, especially with guitars with humbackers.
Sounds good! Very nice amp!!!
Let's hail the era of the solid state mini head, for it has FINALLY arrived!
P.S.: Sorry, I've had tubes, I've carried them and gigged with them, but we are half way through 2022, it's time to move on.
It's good for what it is. If you think this sounds like a slo 100 or slo 30 I don't know what to tell you
@@dingusfuzzklonnkt2755 give the tech a few years and some R&D money and it will be.
Also, can you seriously tell me your audience can tell the difference? Cause for someone who plays for a living that’s what it actually comes down to.
Truth! The "Nothing is better than a tube amp" mentality is, at best, a gatekeeping factor that prevents people about knowing awesome cheap gear (Joyo Bantamp, Orange Micro Terror, that really tiny 50w head from Vox, this new Soldano and the list goes on)
@@hatempire I couldn’t agree more!
It seems like you have a distortion/overdrive pedal on that you disengage at 3:33 while you set the master level before playing clean...or maybe you change to the neck pickup...I can't figure it exactly
try palm muting closer to the bridge. close to de edge
i wonder if can have enough volume for a band practice with a 4x12...
I swore you were gonna pull out a jet city amp. I love my jca100hdm.
I'm buying this with my next paycheck, holy shit! I barely touch my guitar anymore, but thats about to fucking change!
