  • 4 different ways to make a design wall! Today I am making my new design wall for my studio and bringing you along with me...I have missed you all! It's time to get back to work after moving, and before I do this needs to get done. I've had a lot of questions about my previous design wall and so I though I'd share my ideas and tips for making your own.

    The best tip of this whole video was your stud showing us how to find studs for ourselves 😊.

    Great tutorial on the wall. I laughed when you showed the mattress straps. The clips look exactly like garter clips we wore with stockings before they came out with pantyhose 😂😂

      Those garters were tools of my trade. Is it serendipity to find a new more useful way to use garters? It doesn’t matter now. At the time, I loved silk stockings. Now I love quilting. I am transforming and evolving into my truly more creative self.

    I am very new at making quilts but I have been subscribed to your channel for a while. I'm getting ready to redo a room for a sewing space and I found this to be the way I am going to make a design wall. Thanks a heap for your inspiration!
    I also loved the stud finder using magnets, which I am going to also use to hang my tv

    This is exactly what I thought I was looking for. I had figured out everything except how to hang the board on the wall. I was getting so excited leading up to the ending… your hubby… the cabinet screws…. the large washers… yes! yes! got it! got it! Then, nothing. 😢 To me it was the main question, to others it might be a dumb question, but I don’t have a handyman at me disposal, so how do you attach the board to the wall??! Screw straight through the flannel sheet? And how do you easily take it down for cleaning if you do that?

      Same question. How did you mount the board on the wall? How can you change the flannel?

    • @angelrutan8427
      @angelrutan8427 6 місяців тому +1

      I would install using brackets that would be secured directly to the wall. That way the brackets can be removed to change the flannel and there are no holes in the flannel or board. Hope that makes sense!

      Great idea to use the pillow cases as a "traveling design wall/board." Your large design wall is fabulous. I haven't watched the entire video yet but I really need to know how to install it to the wall. Thanks for the great ideas. You REALLY lucked out with the deal on your sheet set. I am just finding your channel thanks to a shout-out from Brenda at Conquering Mount Scrapmore. You posted this 4 years ago so if you see this comment, would you do anything differently for your design wall?

    I am so glad I did more searching. Before I found your tutorial, we already purchased insulation foam boards. I didn't tape them together yet.! I just have them standing very close together. I showed my husband how you cut them in 4's to fold up and store away. He loves that idea. He said, it should fit in our closet under our staircase. The only thing I am not able to do is mount it. But, it still does a great job at holding my blocks. I also purchased flannel for the board, and it really does work great! Thank you for this great video.

    I had my husband bring home two 4'X8' pieces of foam insulation to make myself a design wall a month or so ago. Then when I got it home realized how enormous it would be😲! I cannot do that thing..so I've been staring at them all this time!!. LOVE your foldable design idea!! I will make four portable design boards! One for me and three for friends. Thank you for the illustration of how to tape them together. With a little work and possibly some hand stitching, I may be able to cover the four pieces to have a nice finished result to take to classes and such. Thanks again!!

    Great video and congratulations on your new home and quilting space. My design wall is much like yours. My husband attached wooden slats into the paneling and then we screwed the foam insulation board into these slats. My has been up for years and I am able to vacuum the flannel and change it if I need to in the future.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 років тому

      vacuum the flannel......that's genius! Thanks for passing that along. You know us quilters, we have strings everywhere!! My last design wall was always COVERED with string and because it was just poly batting it was really hard to clean. I like the idea of breaking out the vacuum every once in a while to tidy up :)

      If I didn't do so many t-shirt quilts I would go the same exact route Linda, hanging the flannel sheet without the insulation board is a perfect design wall! I actually hadn't thought about just pinning the t-shirt blocks into the sheet, that's genius!

    Very nice, now I have to find a empty wall 🤔 I’m going to go with the folded up version. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊

      I really like the idea of being able to fold it up when not using it and tucking it away :) Thanks for watching!

    Hardest part of the insulation board is getting it home as I did not have a truck

    Lisa I love the new gray design wall it looks great with the color your walls are painted. BTW the mystery flower quilt would look beautiful as a wall hanging in your room

      Hellllooooo :) So great to hear from you! The grey really does work well in this room, and almost blends in so that it's not so noticeable when not using it...and they grey is such a neutral color that any quilt design won't clash up on the wall :) You are right, that little quilt would look great in here....now to find a place to hang it hehehe :)

    Thanks Lisa! Some good ideas here. You can also use soft felt to cover the Styrofoam but felt is more expensive than your flannel sheet set. 🙏🙏👍👌

    Thanks for sharing, your info was right on track for great design wall options. I am going to make one soon because right now I am using a 96 x 108 flannel backed table cloth $8. from dollar store. It works great but is just taped up as needed. I really need one more stable and that can be pinned also. THANKS AGAIN. Have a great day, love your studio.
