The Wind Band has enjoyed a long and rich association with the March - music composed to assist or escort the movement of groups of people, sometimes for military, other times for dignified or ceremonial functions. The 10 works in this collection represent historic as well as more current examples by highly-regarded composers from eight countries. They span the range of the solemn funeral march to a lilting children’s tune and from ceremonial pomp to brash exuberance.
The Sinfonians by Clifton Williams was composed in 1960 and titled in homage to its commissioning body, the musical fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. A concert march that incorporates the fraternity’s song on music originally composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan, it features all sections of the ensemble through fanfares, cadences, and chorales in a work that is noble, heroic, and heartfelt.
