  • A review of the Nikon 300mm f4.5 lens produced from 1969 to 1998, and now available very cheaply on the used market. How will this manual lens perform on a modern digital camera?
I found this old lens when I was clearing some space in the office. Watch the Vlog here - Professional Photographer Vlog - OFFICE DAY !!! • OFFICE DAY !!! - photo...
Will it be any good used on a modern digital body? It’s completely manual so no AF or AE, but it’s built like a tank and has great quality glass.
Stay watching till the end to see example photos taken with this lens.

I just picked up a nice 300mm f4.5, early version with fixed tripod ring and old H style focusing ring. $20 US in the junk bin at my favorite camera store. I put it on my F2 and love what I see! Thanks for your review.

The ED version Internal Focus model is way sharp and focuses with one finger. I consider it a must have lens

Agreed. The Nikkor 300mm ED IF gold ring is cat’s ass, the bee’s knees, the gravy train on biscuit wheels.

I have the Nikkor 180mm 2.8 ai and use a .7 speed booster for my Olympus em5 mk1 and just a normal mft adapter on my em1 mkiii and love it. I also have the nikkor 50mm 1.2 and 1.4 non ai Amazing pieces of glass.

Got one but believe it is a slight different version if I look at the collar. Mine is from 1975. Glass in perfect condition and on a modern dslr like the D850 it is very easy to nail focus.

Hi, many thanks for the clip - I have recently picked up a good condition same 300mm AI version (non ED and Non IF) here in South Africa. Thus far I only managed to shoot a boring brick wall outside on both my bodies: Nikon d600/d7200 to test sharpness. Must admit, that if you take your time and do everything right: tripod, ISO 100, live view for precise focusing and remote shutter release, then this lens is absolutely great - on both bodies - and amazing from f4.5 - 16. What blew me away was the sharpness on the crop body (d7200) with an angle of view of 450mm. Absolutely love this lens. Regards philip jooste

Wow, you’ve got an effective 450mm with great glass at probably a bargain price. That’s good shopping, enjoy the lens, and thanks for watching Philip 👏📷😊

Hello , thanks for your great video. I got a lot of info from it and thank you for your deep insight into the lens.
Your analysis is very interesting an helpful. I only shot with Nikon AI Lenses and would like to get this 300mm 4.5 AIS IF ED.
You mentioned you bought this lens for around 2 GBP.
However, after going through eBay I notice this lens sells for around between 100USD to 380 USD.

Thank you for those lovely comments, I really appreciate it. Older lenses have suddenly become very popular and I too have noticed the second hand prices rising. With a bit of patience, I often find a few come on the market together and you can then pick up a bargain. I hope you find a good one. Many thanks for watching, best wishes. 👏📸😀

Thanks for the review! I picked up a mint ed-if version of this lens last week. mounted to my fuji xt2 I am quite impressed with the color rendering and sharpness. The build quality of this lens is exquisite also. The Nikon TC14b teleconverter seems to pair acceptably with it also without much loss in sharpness (mind you I'm just an amatuer). Considering that this lens and tc is a fraction of the cost of the native 100-400 fuji it fits my desire perfectly for now despite being a creature of a tripod. another benefit of the manual focus is in pairing the camera to my phone I can really hide from the birds at my feeder and get great pre-composed shots without massive battery drain.

Hello Riley. Normally good videos, but I think you missed the mark on this one, for someone with 25 years experience. Video spent too long showing the difference in focal lengths, which is a given. 300mm is 300mm.
Grain in the sky? None of my lenses, regardless of their price show grain in the sky relating to the quality of the glass.
As someone else pointed out, by setting your non-CPU lens data you would have hot proper f-stop readout.
Lastly f2.8 to f4.5 is only 1 and 1/3 stops of light, not 2. I hope you read this as constructive criticism.

Sorry you didn’t like this one. It’s an old one. In my defence I was pretty new to UA-cam when I made this video almost three years ago. Hopefully they have improved a bit since then. Thanks for watching the channel, I really appreciate it 👍🏻

You can expose in M and S mode. And you can use Iso-Auto and have an automatic exposure.

    • @rileyphotos

Hi, thank you for your comments. It’s a good idea, I’ve just popped the 300mm on a Nikon body and you’re right, as well as manual, there is a way to shoot with some auto exposure assistance. It’s not on S mode though, as the lens has no electronics, and so on Shutter priority the camera would need to tell the lens what stop to use, but it can’t communicate. However, Aperture priority works perfectly, so by choosing A, as you manually alter the aperture ring the camera can control the shutter speed, therefore giving auto exposure. Great work Alessio, well spotted. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I have this lens on hold with KEH in the states. From your review looks like this might be a great lens on a budget. I will let you know when I get it. Here are the specs to see if what you have is what I'm looking at. Nikon Nikkor 300mm F/4.5 P Non AI NPK Manual Focus. I was just at the beach filming, (Panasonic AF100A) and wanted to get in a bit closer than my 120mm Nikon. (ua-cam.com/video/-jLTUGodQNo/v-deo.html) looking across the channel there were waves crashing on the rocks, I wanted to be able to really fill the frame with the splashing! Do you think this would be a good lens for that? Great review! I've subscribed to your channel!

Hi Don, thanks for watching and your kind comments. I think that’s the same lens, Nikon 300mm f4.5 manual. The ED AF version that came after is a lovely lens but much more money, if you want an occasional long lens for some cutaways this could be a great option. I use an AF101 to film interviews sometimes and regularly use my prime Nikon lenses with an adapter for it. The great thing is, as it’s a micro four thirds chip, that 300mm will effectively become a 600mm. What a result 👍🏻 I hope it works for you, let us know how you get in with it. Cheers
