      Why are people surprised? As if Disney is not one of the largest mega corporations that prioritizes making money over everything else and it's original founder didn't come from the same era of time where society was first attempting to humanize companies and make them seem like a net positive for the world? This is the logical conclusion of allowing corporations to weaponize a global pandemic to extort the common people because that's what happens in a capitalist society.

    I went to Tokyo Disney back in 2019 and it was really enlightening. The parks were spotlessly clean, all the attractions were in perfect working order and the prices were reasonable and upcharge free. Then I came back to WDW with overflowing trash cans, messy bathrooms, rides with broken effects and the prices keep going up and up. Even now while Japan is in a state of emergency, Tokyo Disneyland is running their daytime parade and having traditional-style meet and greets. I think anyone who is a true Disney fan should save up and take a trip to Tokyo Disney. They have easily the best theme park in the world with DisneySea, and Tokyo Disneyland is the second or third best of the Disney parks. The difference? Tokyo isn't owned by Disney.

    I reached my line a few years ago. As an Orlando resident with mobility issues, I often use the handicapped parking to shorten the trip back to my car after time in one of the parks. When they decided to sell premium parking back in 2016 I think it was, specifically at the Magic Kingdom, and moved the extra handicapped parking so far away that the walk became more than a half a mile, I was done. I really felt for the people who needed a courtesy wheelchair for someone in their party, and had to walk most of that half mile to get it, then back, then back again. The fact that they thought that it was a good idea to sell (formerly) handicapped parking to anyone willing to pay for it absolutely ruined everything for me. I went from visiting MK at least twice a week, to not going at all for the last year + after that change until I let my pass expire.

    As someone who took advantage of every perk staying on WDW property, I’m not sure there is a single advantage anymore to being on property. You have to get yourself from the airport to hotel, you need to get your luggage off the baggage claim and transport to your room, they charge hundreds if you park overnight, there are no magic hours so you don’t get extra time, you don’t get a free magicband, you have no advantage when booking lightning lane. Like what is the point if not just location? That’s what frustrates me most

    • @qunewsguy
      @qunewsguy 3 роки тому +26

      Even location isn’t everything. I’m staying at Wyndham grand this week. For the price I’m paying I get a room that’s equivalent to a Disney deluxe for less than the price of an all-star. With my AP I can pay $20 for preferred parking and still come out ahead of staying on property with more spare time too

    • @jillybean1373
      @jillybean1373 3 роки тому +6

      I agree. Especially at the cheaper hotels. 1/2 hour early in a park (when that starts) does not justify the $200+ a night price tag.

    • @Thommadura
      @Thommadura 3 роки тому +2

      When World first opened, virtually all of those perks did not exist as well. (Except Hotel Parking, there were no Magic Bands, no free transfers from the airport, no extra hours at the parks, and over the years Disney instituted them to get more people to come. RIGHT NOW - having lost a year or more - many people have the money that they did not spend on vacations during the Pandemic's height and there is no shortage of customers. Eventually that surplus will work its way out and Disney will be offering new Perks.

    Historically, they use to have ticket books and charged for each ride.
    But the price of admission was cheaper so it was reasonable.
    Then they raised admission prices and did away with ticket books because, everyone should be able to experience the parks for one Disney price.
    Now they’re raising admission and charging for rides.
    It’s like Disney isn’t about appealing to guests anymore, but appealing to the shareholders.

    • @Bustermachine
      @Bustermachine 2 роки тому +1

      Doing away with the ticket books was in large part about guest satisfaction, but it wasn't quite so altruistic. One of Disney's engineers realized that (waiting) time is another currency that guests have to spend once they're in the park and that with some nudging you could guests in the mindset to make efficient use of their time.
      This lead to guests being happier and made the ticket book superfluous.
      Fast pass, for instance, was about rider 'in-fill' not really a virtual cue that superseded the main ride cue like some people thought.
      Of course, there's a key distinction between this old system and what seems to be happening today. Everyone was equal in terms of the time they had 'in pocket' once they stepped through the park gates.

I love Disney World, I’ve gone almost every year since I was a baby. Those parks are important to me. That said, I love Disney enough to criticize it’s practices both as an employer and as a customer service organization.
    It’s been aggravating to see so many Disney Parks fans try to be apologists for an insanely powerful corporation. Like, we can just say changes like the lack of complimentary magic bands, the closing of the magical express, and the emergence of genie+ and lightning lanes are objectively bad. They serve no one except the company that is already charging a mint to let us set foot in any of their parks. That’s not okay! I'm from Australia and my husband and I have been to Disneyland and Disneyworld several times. I've also been to HK Disney and Disneyland Paris. It's too much of a headache to make plans to go again, (once borders are open to us), because we have to juggle international airfare availability, hotel availability and now availability to get to the parks. We won't be the only international visitors put off by the booking system, reliance on a smartphone app and extra $$$. I want to rock up to the gate, buy a ticket, then have a carefree experience like we've always done. It's a great pity and Disney executives should be ashamed. Any future trip we take to the US will be based on sightseeing and not Disney. Greed will be the downfall of the Magic.

Bob Chapek feels more like a CEO than a fan, like Iger did, and I think that's what makes the difference. People are more willing to accept changes in the parks when they are done by someone who seems like a fan rather than someone who seems like they're out for money. At the end of the day, Disney is a company and they are going to do whatever they feel is in their best interest as a business. Idk, to me it feels like we may be headed towards another Eisner-type era where there are cutbacks (see the cancelled Mary Poppins attraction, rip you will be missed) and price increases all around the parks until someone has to do something drastic to save the reputation of the company.

      Epcot never was what Walt Disney imagined for his Florida Project which would've been amazing. He bought enough acreage to not run into the space issues like Disneyland. Unfortunately instead of expanding, WDW replaces existing attractions. There's too many to list and I miss them.

    Getting rid of Disney Magical Express honestly makes zero sense to me. The main draw of it was to make it convenient for guests staying on property to get to their hotels from the airport for no additional cost. Not only that, but by enticing guests to use Magical Express instead of renting a car or paying for a taxi, it also helps prevent them from visiting their competitors such as Universal. Either it's to cut costs, or a more sinister possibility of trying to get more guests to pay for the Minnie Van service, so guests are paying Disney to pick them up from the airport rather than it being complimentary. Either way, I think they are misunderstanding the convenience factor of Magical Express, and it will backfire in the long run.

    • @madelynelise8956

      I think that the convenience of Uber and Lyft are the reason why Disney doesn’t care about maintaining the magical express anymore. They liked having people completely reliant on Disney transportation but the fact of the matter is that people don’t feel that way anymore. It’s too easy to pull your phone and get to Universal from your Disney resort. And then you add the fact that Extra Magic Hours have been taken away, which has really disincentivized people from staying at the resorts and has led to people cutting costs by staying at other hotels and Airbnb‘s. From a business perspective based on the current climate, I really understand the cancellation of Disney’s magical express. It’s not worth it to them anymore.

    Piggybacking on your comment about the parks feeling “hollow”. I think what it is, is the influx of IP based expansions, new attractions, and attraction updates. TPDvids made a good point in his new video, in that the last completely new original concept attraction to be added to WDW was Expedition Everest in 2006, and Soarin’ Over California in 2001 at DCA. IP isn’t all bad, but you need original concepts to balance the IP.

I am in the minority who liked a lot of the more original DCA things that were non-IP, and the Marvel and Pixar overlays feel so soulless and hollow. Tokyo has done a lot of good with original IP and Disney IP so extinct that it might as well be original (like my favourite rides anywhere ever, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth). And Mystic Manor is nothing to sneeze at either... But I think we have to face facts that, at least in the USA, the golden age of original concepts is dead. I don't know that we're ever going to see that golden age of Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, It's a Small World, Enchanted Tiki Room, Country Bear Jamboree, Marc Davis' additions to the Jungle Cruise, Carousel of Progress, Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain ever again. They seem more intent on vandalizing, effacing, and otherwise removing everything Marc Davis did than on coming up with original concepts of their own. They gave us Pandora instead of importing Mysterious Island and Mystic Manor. And yet, when you look at Disney history, the standout attractions that everyone agrees are the classics are almost all original concepts.

      And if you look at the recent additions to the park landwise there are less actual attractions and more focus on cheaper things like actors and dining and stores.
      The primary goal of the parks isn't experience anymore it is about opening up your pocketbook (two "attractions" in galaxy's edge are money based experiences, people can't afford to experience every time and eventually will dry out of people that want/can afford them). Even with Avengers Campus they only open with 1 ride, 1 restaurant, 1 bar, and have a bunch of wasted space. Dr. Strange could have been a ride or 3D show (maybe moved into the Hyperion). The focus of the park has turned away from repeatable family fun into 1 off experiences. For example once you taste all the food or drinks in those lands the novelty fades. Everything is surcharged and made to sell you something else, just look at the web suppliers and the webshooters/replusor/Spider-bots.

We spent so much less on food (cancelled all our sit down meals and ate snacks, counter service, and Food & Wine booths) and merch (only spent $200 total) than we would have otherwise. I somehow think this isn't what Walt Disney imagined and we are hard pressed to do it again when I think about the kind of vacation we could've had with the amount of money we spent.

    I think this last trip (last month, Aug '21) was my line, I believe. I knew it would be different due to the pandemic, but it fell so short. I'm a life-long Disneyphile. I was born the same year Magic Kingdom opened so I loved celebrating with MK. It was always magical, even when it was hot and packed. This year, however, it lacked that magic. MK was pretty open considering everything and we were able to ride almost everything and see every show we wanted. But no more free buttons (they did say we could buy select ones in some shops though we never found them), so I didn't get a 50th birthday one to add to my collection. Okay. not a big deal. Some Fantasyland rides (talking about you, Small World) were in shabby shape and disappointing. Epcot, though, the next day...that was the line in the sand. We paid full-price admission and parking to eat and shop, deal with very cranky and bored cast members and one ride on Frozen Ever After. If I had known so much of the park was closed or in stages of construction (or deconstruction), I wouldn't have wasted money. Epcot was my favorite since it was created but after this trip, I felt like we should have just went to Disney Springs for the experience,or at least got our money's worth and went to Universal (or even stayed home and went to Six Flags). I even saw several maintenance cast members dealing with overflowing trash cans--something I can't remember eVER seeing before this trip. I did thank them for their work.
    Listen, I'm of the mindset that they can charge whatever they want. It is a big bummer, but it's a fact here. That said, I am also free to decide if that is worth the value of my hard-earned dollar. Sadly, it's not any longer. In the past, Disney stood for something. You knew what you could expect and it made it worth the money. It was truly magical. Now, it's just like any other theme park in my opinion and I won't pay premium for a so-so experience. It's a shame, really. All of my kids' first theme park experiences were at Magic Kingdom (though we live 30 mins from Six Flags and 4.5 hours from Silver Dollar City and various other theme parks). My grandchildren won't have that experience, at least not until things get straigtened out on the quality and value end of things.

I can't say for certain if that's includes executives, but if it does, hopefully that means an early retirement for Chapek. His idea for attracting families with higher living wages than their current customer base by pushing more costly premiums instead of making it cheaper just doesn't make sense. If people that could definitely afford a trip to Disneyland while it was cheaper weren't coming, why would they start coming in droves when it got more expensive? That's just flawed business logic.

    Let’s not forget that Disney just smashed earnings expectations and are doing very well financially. I am also very disappointed in the changes. To add on your comments about the magic express, it was more than just a bus ride from Orlando airport to the parks, it was the convenience of dropping your luggage at your home city airport and finding it next delivered straight to your room. Here is the problem now: The park reservation system is completely useless. (I'm a local to Disney World I go pretty much every week). It is completely useless, it is Disney's way to control who can go into what park when they decide. For example, Passholders get a different availability calendar than regular ticketed guests. The calendar could show up completely full to us while still having plenty of availability to regular guests just because Disney could say, "that's enough passholders for today." It ruins the idea of being able to go spontaneously.
    Not only that, but for some reason, park hopping isn't allowed until 2pm over here still, and they're charging guests the same price as before! During the pandemic? It made sense. Now? What the heck is the point? Now if I want to go to Magic Kingdom, but the calendar's availability is full, I'd have to book another park like Animal Kingdom, get stuck there until 2pm and then be able to go to Magic Kingdom. So it still doesn't stop me from going to MK if the park is full, I just have to go through a lot more steps to get there, which is just unnecessary.
    Now don't even get me started on Fastpass and Lightning Lane. Even if all the other decisions hadn't been made, Genie+ by itself is still enough to ruin the entire park experience. Free Fastpass was a huge draw that Disney had. They were the only theme park that included it in park admission. When people entered that gate, no matter how they got their ticket, every single person had just as good of a chance to have a great time as everyone else. Now? Now it's prestigious. Now people get to have a better time than others simply because they can afford to pay more or are wealthier. How magical would It be to be standing in the stand-by line with your child only to have them ask "How come they get to cut in front of us?" And your answer is "Because they have more money than us, so we can't have as much fun as them." Like that's the mindset this is creating. It's not "all guests are created equal" anymore.
    New Annual Passes? Pay far more for far less. They up-charged all annual passes while increasing block out dates, removing free Photopass entirely, and making it so much harder for us to make park reservations. Photopass doesn't even work half the time. I get photos of empty boats after riding pirates, the wrong party's picture after riding Buzz, getting no picture at all after riding Splash, etc, and they want me to pay $100 extra on top of my annual pass only to have that constantly happening? Now yes I "could call and have them go in and manually find it" but again, I'd be paying an extra $100 just to have to do that!
    Even when it doesn't come to money, the changes they're deciding to make are just stupid, and, some, infuriating. For example, they are starting to ruin classic rides for the sake of a couple people who had their feelings hurt on Twitter. Like Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain. Have you ever been on either of those 2 rides and heard somebody upset by what was displayed on those rides? I've been to the parks over 100 times and I haven't. Cast Members I know personally who have worked the rides for years haven't either. The Splash Mountain one really bothers me. You're going to take one of your most popular rides of all time, one of the most iconic images at the Magic Kingdom, a part of the huge marketing campaign for Disney that is the "Disney Mountain Range" and replace it with a cheap reskin of a not-very-well-liked movie that doesn't even make sense in the spot it'd be going in all for the sake of pleasing a few people who, again, got angry on Twitter? You must be out of your mind to cater to that crowd rather than focussing on true fans who visit constantly and are never upset by the ride. But sure, go ahead, ruin one of the best rides ever created.
    They finally brought fireworks back in July this year at Disney World. Long-awaited, terribly missed, and then what do they do? "Happily Ever After is ending forever in 4 months so make sure you come see it before it's gone." Seriously? All this build-up for the return of one of the most beloved fireworks shows that has had only a 4-year run, and then you turn right around and say it's getting the sack in 4 months??? Yes, I know it's for the 50th-anniversary show, but then bring it back after the celebration is over!
    Every single choice they have made since the pandemic began has been a terrible one. It all started with painting Cinderella Castle the color of Pepto Bismal. Iger and Chapek are both to blame, but man, Chapek has not handled anything well since he started. This is the problem with Disney. Stop fixing what isn't broken. The version of the parks before the pandemic was the version that everybody loved. Go back to that.

    My family and I went to WDW Oct 2021 and ended up being there the first days before and after Genie was released. It was awful. We've gone every few years for 20 years and this was by FAR the worst time ever. We could only get on a couple of rides a day bc of most wait lines being 60+ minutes and some being several hours (2-4hrs). We have handicaps where we can't do that, it's not worth it. We had a wheelchair with us and were shocked at how poor accomadtions for getting on rides with it were.
    We really missed fast passes. Genie came out and we were extremely disappointed. We were going to try it even though we couldn't really afford it and then overheard another family say they bought it for the day ($15 per person, per day! and some rides are $15 per person per ride on top of that!) and ended up being able to only ride one ride with it bc their time slot for their first ride they picked was so late in the day. You can only get one pass at a time and can't get another until the first's time slot expires. Not a fast pass replacement at all and you didn't even get your money's worth. Idk where Bob is getting his info, but so many guests were NOT happy while we were there. Cast members weren't happy either and we recieved the worst service we've ever had (totally get that one, they're going through a lot, not blaming the cast members). They were really rude with zero patience. The parks were overcrowded so bad. You HAD to use their 'app' for almost everything, even as the only option for ordering food, and the app design is just terrible and it kept malfunctioning all the time. Like they'd just slapped it together. But there were no other back up options to using the app for most things.
    A TON of rides kept breaking down, we would waste 40 minutes in line in the heat and then be told the ride broke down, no consolation or pass to come back later. We couldn't get on the newest, hottest rides because the lines were so long (several hours) and all 'passes' 'sold' out at 7am, even when we tried getting them at 7am. We did get a 'lightinging lane' pass on the app for one new ride and waited all day (our time slot we got at 1pm was projected to call us at 4pm but we actually got called at 7pm; we were just waiting around from 4-7pm thinking we'd be called anytime) and then had to wait 40-60 MINUTES standing in the 'lightning lane'. We were really upset. How is that lightning?? Terrible terrible design. We didn't leave the park that night until 9:30pm, ruining all our plans for the evening and having wasted 5-6 hours on one 5 minute ride. Like what?
    This trip was just not magical at all. We were so disappointed. We just kept saying, "WHAT is going ON?" It was just so BLATANTLY money grabbing in all ways and they weren't even trying to cover it up. They didn't care about our experience as long as they already had our money. We had conversations about how obviously middle class families like us were being priced out as we couldn't afford to do much and only the rich will be able to attend the parks soon. I know we'll be taking a step back and praying Disney gets their crap together. This is not the way.

    I recently went to Walt Disney World in July. While yes, it is still my favorite place on earth, it just feels like it’s lacking the magic I felt on every trip. Everyone is paranoid about the pandemic, characters are pretty much nowhere to be seen, and Disney is charging more for things. All of those things combined just made the experience very mixed for me. Obviously, things pertaining to the pandemic are out of Disney’s control, but the things they can control make the parks feel off to me.

      We went October to WDW, very tragic not Magical at all, definitely not a happy place. Mask mandate didn't bother us, spacing requirements were nice(don't like people breathing down my neck or my ankles being banged and bruised by strollers or mobility fatmobiles). The mobile order for food was chaotic with many restaurants not open, too cheap to bring in castmembers for staffing and those who are there seemed stressed. No fireworks, no character meets or parades but the worst was operating hours were so limited that every park closed before dark. They all look better then, it hides the deferred maintenance and trash everywhere.
      We stayed at SOG so saw the daily destruction of the Polynesian which was my 1st resort stay, always loved it. While there booking opened up for 1 October 2021 so I started trying for my bucket list stay at the Contemporary(my calendar had been set for 495 days[May 2020]but CoVid halted that). I nor a travel agent could reserve, listed as closed and unavailable. I'm done with WDW since nothing has returned that I had planned for our WDW 50th anniversary trip. I've been thinking about the Disney parks a lot lately and I think one of the things that is leading to a lot of dissatisfaction is the lack of gamification in the parks. Taking out sorcerers of the magic kingdom was a weird step back from interactivity (aka: Disney's beloved immersion), which makes its direct comparison, the new magic band + pale in comparison to our nostalgic reminiscing. Add this to a growing amount of daily fantasy immersion via our mobile tech, we're noticing a diminishing amount of extra-immersiveness from the parks compared to daily life. A daily life we are only reminded of through the cost hikes. Simply... the parks are starting to feel old fashioned, but we're paying more for it.

    It may sound obvious but for anyone who isn’t aware, has never really paid attention, or has generally looked favorably to what I’m about to describe but Disney is the king of a phenomenon that I was made aware of during my many years working for a national sit-down family restaurant chain, something I call “The New Menu Fallacy”.
    I won’t name my former employer (and I’ll explain how this all relates to Disney shortly) but before working at said restaurant chain I used to get excited whenever one of my favorite chains would roll out a shiny new menu. Even during my first year or two working there I thought a new menu was pretty cool… new pictures, artwork, layout etc. What I came to realize though is that a new menu was actually a veiled attempt at masking a restaurant wide price increase. Although I completely understand economics and inflation, sometimes this tactic gets abused by corporations like Disney for example. From that point I became extremely cynical whenever large companies would try to repackage their attempts to price gouge their customers to the point that they successfully convince otherwise level headed people that they actually WANT to pay more for oftentimes less or a noticeably inferior product. Like drinking AND HAPPILY PAYING FOR the Kool Aid for your cult’s upcoming mass suicide event. Although I’m a self proclaimed Disney Fanboy, I cannot and wholeheartedly WILL NOT support their increasingly absurd and insulting attempts to get us to pay top dollar for the privilege of having Mickey themed cookie dust sneezed into our mouths by some poor overworked cast member. But Disney knows there is an endless supply of people like most of us sadly who will gladly accept that with a big smile on their face AND will immediately get back in line right after for seconds. The only way this will stop is when the Disney fan community and the greater public at large will say enough is enough and stop happily shoveling cash into their pockets.

I wrote to the company saying how this COULD be a great time for virtual trips (with the right technology). Is it something that can make up for it? No, nothing can take away from an experience like that, but I think even Walt and Roy would be very unhappy with this approach and would do whatever they could to make the park accessible to guests (Walt made records back in the 50s of musical trips to the park or even the Golden Horseshoe Revue). Walt understood $$$ but I think even he would not like this. It’s taking the opportunity many waited their entire lives gone both for money or for being PC

      I don't pretend that Walt wouldn't or didn't do a lot of things I wouldn't agree with, but he did once say something to his money people along the lines of "I know we could charge them more at this shop or restaurant; but we won't, that way they'll remember, become loyal customers, and keep coming back." I'm not always big on the whole "that's not how Walt would want it!" mentality, but he was certainly onto something there and current and recent leadership has pretty much thrown it away.

      in comments i don't say WDW, just DW, because i highly doubt walt would stand for this bastardization of his dream. that's not to say he wasn't a capitalist without sin, just that he wasn't a slave to the almighty buck like these corporate carpetbaggers.

    It’s getting worse too. Disneyland now has a Christmas party. They barely offer you anything special, puts the annual Christmas parade behind a paywall (this is a parade locals wait all year to see). And it’s 160 bucks. No discount for people with keys. It literally just lets you watch something that came with normal admission for years and some glorified Tomorrowland dance parties but in all the lands. Why.
