15:04 Regarding the biggest needed change: As a good, bureaucratic German citizen I have to point this out: You‘re pleading to the wrong institution. HVV has no say in terms of frequency or schedule. That’s down to each federal state. Once S5 crosses over into Lower-Saxony LNVG becomes responsible and they simply decided that an hourly service off-peak is good enough. That’s part of the reason why some trains simply terminate in Neugraben: Lowe-Saxony didn’t want to pay for them. Even the length of the trains (which is dictated by the platforms) are down to Lower-Saxony cheapening out on 200 m long trains since it would cost more and they’d need to finance platform extensions. Therefore the federal state of Hamburg swapped S3 and S5 to allow for longer trains on the more heavily used S3 service. German Kirchturmdenken in a nutshell.
*FUN FACT:* At dawn and night, some trains driving as the S5 drive from Ohlsdorf to Elgbaustraße. I was pretty stunned and confused at first, but there seriously was an S5 train arriving, lol. I rode with it until Ohlsdorf and asked the driver why. You should try it!
As someone who primarily used the S21 and now the S2, I genuinely don't understand why they felt the need to change the numbering to remove the pattern between the single and double digit lines. For whom is this simpler? Newcomers and tourists will have to look at the plans no matter what, and with the old naming scheme there was also at least some clear pattern to learn and use.
Wow… I learned more about Hamburg in this video than I did… ever. S5 service reminds me of how the 5 train in NYC always gets rerouted somewhere and has 3 northbound termini during rush hours (and is also the most unpredictable and unreliable subway line in the trunk line it runs on)
In case you need video ideas: the S1 has a few issues too, especially the west branch between Wedel and Blankenese. There's only a single track and if during peak hours one train coming from HBF is delayed by more than ~20s every train after that (in both directions) will be delayed, too. Once the branch is about 7 minutes behind schedule a train gets cancelled, which leads to the next train being delayed because more people would like to use it and the whole cycle continues. Also, Iserbrook is the only single track station in the whole network, Blankenese is a terminal station and Sülldorf signal box hasn't been modernized since 1927
I think I can definitely make a video out of this! I didn't know about Iserbrook, and I feel like Blankenese Bf in general is a trove of both history and potential network improvements

I definitely see your point alr But I live along the Station of Langenfelde, north of Altona and for me, it is really important, that the S5 doesn't go through the City Tunnel since it is really time saving for me :)
Theoretically you could swap S3 and S5 here to offer direct services from Stade to the city center and also give you the opportunity to skip Altona. But then you have the longer trains on the Verbindungsbahn and they are probably needed in the Citytunnel...
@@eingoogle-nutzer6380 My thought would be perhaps to keep the S6 as a bypass and route the S5 back through city tunnel. Also, I'm unsure how the S6 Lurup branch would slot into this all
I hope a potantial Verbindungsbahn tunnel alternative takes in account more plattforms for these 3 lines S2, 5 and 6. I love visiting/riding to Stade, a city center not completly obliderated by the war is always refreshing. Maybe they build some kind of rapid transport north of the alster sometime....in 2050
I don't think it's worse the old S3 to Stade. That route was always problematic. It just makes sense to create this new S5 route, because the extension to Kaltenkirchen will also require trains with a pantograph, so they can use these trains more effectively
Ok, i understand. I am actually a expert of literally making the hvv plan better. LET ME COOK *U-Bahn* U-Bahn: every 2-3 mins should a train arrive at a station U1: should stay the same U2: should stay the same U3: should stay the same U4: it should be redirected to Horner Geest, by planned and the U4 should drive until Grasbrook over the "Moldauhafen" *S-Bahn* S1: should run between 2-3 minutes between Hamburg Airport and Blankenese. The rest should be between 5-7 mins. S2: should drive until Elbgaustr. (should temporarily run to Pinneberg) S3: should run until Stade again S4: should run between Bad Oldeslohe and Altona, between Bad Ahrensburg and Altona should a train arrive within a 5 min distance, the rest 10 mins. S5: should run between Elmshorn and Hauptbahnhof within a 3 min distance S6: should run between Kaltenkirchen and Hauptbahnhof within a 5 min distance *AKN* A1: runs between Kaltenkirchen and Neumünster A2: runs between Norderstedt M. and Ulzburg Süd (sometimes until Kaltenkirchen) A3: should stay the same WOW THAT TOOK LONG BRUH
13:38 What are you talking about here? Yes changing plattforms in busy times at the Hamburg Hbf is bothersome (especially if you are like me one of the unfortunate souls frequently arriving at plattform 13 a-c which is especially overcrowded), but to change the S-Bahn line while coming out of Stade doesn't require leaving the plattform at all (unless you want to go back the way you came to the south/east) and isn't even in the main building like the Plattform 1 is where the S-Bahn connections leading back south/east are. To get to Altona you literally just have to step out of the train and wait on the plattform until the right train arrives to get on. Even if you want to change direction to go to the Airport there is a seperate tunnel just for changing to the other S-Bahn plattform.(or to the U1 or U3)
Yes, but as I say shortly after, changing a direct route to one with a connection- even a small one - is still a downgrade for those making that commute
@@TFTSBthat's true, but other people get more direct connections, so it evens out. The new network will be good for the future, only with these simpler routes the punctuality will be able to be increased
I'm from the other side of Hamburg and I love to complain about the S-Bahn, and the UA-cam algorithm knows me all too well so here I am. I'm from near Pinneberg and I used to always take the S3 from Halstenbek to get to Hamburg, but ever since they introduced an express bus line from Pinneberg to the airport, I've always been using that to get to Niendorf Nord and take the U2 from there because you can NEVER rely on the S-Bahn. Every single time I take the S-Bahn to get to some kind of important appointment or to catch a long distance train, there's ALWAYS some complimation. Because I'm now an U-Bahn enjoyer, I have never actually experienced the S5 until this day since I think I've only ever used the S-Bahn once since the network update when I had to go to Harburg. While the new network is probably better for central Hamburg as there won't be as many complications in Altona anymore, it sucks for people coming from outside the town. I was also a big fan of the single and double digit services, but I've actually noticed that many locals were never aware of the system behind it, so that might explain why they changed it. The old network map was certainly tough to read for outsiders with multiple services having the same colour, and S2 and S11 not even being marked properly because they were peak hours only. It definitely makes sense to run so many trains to Neugraben because of how busy the Hauptbahnhof - Harburg stretch is, but it's certainly silly to create the "new" S6 service instead of just running more S5 trains. It's also really silly to get rid of the Citytunnel connection so you HAVE to change trains. I like the AKN a lot, but extending S-Bahn services to Kaltenkirchen is certainly better for the people up there because of the annoying change at Eidelstedt (And it's certainly better than the rail replacement service that's been going on for way too long now). By the way, them adding and removing another set of 3 cars to trains also happens on the S3 at Elbgaustraße, or at least it used to on the old network, I'm not sure if they still do that. There's also an additional S-Bahn platform at Pinneberg because some S21 trains used to terminate there ages ago, but it's also fallen out use long ago and it's really sad to look at. Any way, long story short, you've earned yourself a sub and my condolences for having to rely on the S5. I keep seeing tweets from S-Bahn Hamburg every day that trains only run between Stade and Neugraben or not at all. Hopefully they'll fix some of their issues soon, but I fear with the extension to Kaltenkirchen you'll get even more delays and complications. Fun!
@@TFTSB The U4 is so dope but it's also such a huge letdown considering how long it took them to build two stations and then another one, and how long it is taking them to build the Horner Geest extension (which just got delayed by another year). The new stations are certainly the coolest on the network, but right now the line's kind of a joke that's only there to take pressure of the U2. It will be really cool to see when it eventually reaches Wilhelmsburg and Harburg... at some point before the heat death of the universe. Also I do not understand why the U4 does that huge 180 degrees turn from Jungfernstieg to Überseequartier without calling anywhere, and they should have built a stop near the Elbphilharmonie. They built a whole new U-Bahn line to serve the HafenCity, but you still have to use the U3 to get to the HafenCity's biggest attraction from Baumwall. I get why some people say it's a huge waste of tax money.
Every time I ride the U-Bahn, I'm so surprised by its consistency! I'm so used to 2 minutes being closer to 5 or entire trains just being cancelled that the U-Bahn actually feels refreshing... How are they able to run on time, but the S-Bahn feels like its held together with duct tape?
In the U-Bahn System, every line has its own tracks and those are always one per direction. The S-Bahn network, in contrary, has a lot of interlining, sometimes also shares track with regular heavy-rail services and also has a single-track part. Therefore, delays on one train will spread throughout the system.
One of the main problems for the S Bahn Hamburg is that, (as most railways in Germany r.n.) they have a crippling shortage of personal. That’s probably the reason they cut the frequency of service in the edge times of day. Also our poor railway is horribly underfunded everywhere because of the Auto Lobby(hate these guys).
I really liked this video. I was wondering what's up with the S5 line when i was in Neugraben a few weeks back, it just didn't go past the station due to some technical problems. The S5 line also somewhat reminded me of my own local "S-Bahn" line RS1 in Bremen, which also has a few different end points and atrocious frequencies in the eastern half, especially on weekends.
I feel like the Bremen RS lines are worth a video all their own. Especially that weird RS6 line! Only has two stops and none of them are even in Bremen!
It really seems like the main problem from everything stated is the inconsistency of service and that to hide that they just decided to call several lines the same name so that through the city center at least it seems more consistent. Which yeah, that's a pretty terrible way to just try and cover up systemic failures.
Great video, very well researched and explained. I agree with most of your points, not with the last one tho. I mean, your main essance of this video is that we need more frequent commuter services, which I totally agree on. However, I think with the new S5 line, this will be provided. I mean, what is the point of rebranding the Kaltenkirchen branch from AKN to S6 if it still has the same terminus at Eidelstedt? I.e. my Grandpa lives in Kaltenkirchen and if I want to visit him (I live in Hamburg proper close to the Kellinghusenstraße station), I need 1.5 to 2 hours to get to him, this would be dramatically decreased with the new S5 running through the Hamburg city centre towards Kaltenkirchen. I also don't think this line is overstreched, most lads and lasses from Stade/Buxtehude/Neugraben or so on would probably get off earlier anyways (in central Hamburg somewhere), and I also think that such commuter trains need to stop at Hamburg main station. I'd rather reroute some underground lines to decrease passenger numbers at the main station instead or re-introduce some tram lines to provide more direct connections between suburbs. Btw isn't the S6 meant to be extended further towards Kellinghusen?
Went to Hamburg this year. Really missed out on the daytrips (like you mentioned to Stade) but also to other places like Blankenese. Also, for some reason, the city was a tad bit deserted (I went in early july). Not really sure why. I'd go again but make sure to visit these outer cities instead as imo they just look better.
I'm surprised it was so empty! If you come again during the summer, I'd say go for the end of July/into August so you can hit the Summer Dom Carnival in St. Pauli. Hamburg also does have some very pretty areas within it - if you want a nice pedestrianised area that looks sort of like what I showed off near where I live in Niedersachsen, the area around Niendorf Markt in Hamburg proper feels a bit similar architecturally and layout-wise!
@@TFTSB Ah thanks. Yeah I missed out on St. Pauli. Did go to Planten and Blomen though. I usually kept to east of Dammtor so I didn't really get a feel of Altona or Harburg and such.
Actually agree with the improvements but I think the new system is allover simpler especially for people who don't live here and are not train enthusiasts. The changes are unfortunate but apparently there's less changing overall now (although I think this number is based on normal running which is not a given especially on the s5). Then again I have it easier, living in harburg and I do think the hinterland connectionsshould be more of a priority
@@TFTSB Don't worry, Moldauhafen is set to open in 2031! ...Surely they'll get to Wilhelmsburg and Harburg eventually... right??? 🙂🙂🙂 It would certainly be great to take some pressure off the S-Bahn, and it would definitely be 1000% more reliable than the S-Bahn

@@eingoogle-nutzer6380 My thought would be perhaps to keep the S6 as a bypass and route the S5 back through city tunnel. Also, I'm unsure how the S6 Lurup branch would slot into this all
This video considering this channel size doesn't have the right to be this funny and good, nice work
Thank you so so much!
Fair enough takes, even if I disagree. They could always just split the route into two for the sake of consistency :)
@@TFTSBi think that's when the s6 comes along
I kinda just want them to revert it back to the double digit numbers. It was actually LESS confusing than it is now!!!
I miss the double digit system
Ok, i understand. I am actually a expert of literally making the hvv plan better. LET ME COOK
*U-Bahn*
U-Bahn: every 2-3 mins should a train arrive at a station
U1: should stay the same
U2: should stay the same
U3: should stay the same
U4: it should be redirected to Horner Geest, by planned and the U4 should drive until Grasbrook over the "Moldauhafen"
*S-Bahn*
S1: should run between 2-3 minutes between Hamburg Airport and Blankenese. The rest should be between 5-7 mins.
S2: should drive until Elbgaustr. (should temporarily run to Pinneberg)
S3: should run until Stade again
S4: should run between Bad Oldeslohe and Altona, between Bad Ahrensburg and Altona should a train arrive within a 5 min distance, the rest 10 mins.
S5: should run between Elmshorn and Hauptbahnhof within a 3 min distance
S6: should run between Kaltenkirchen and Hauptbahnhof within a 5 min distance
*AKN*
A1: runs between Kaltenkirchen and Neumünster
A2: runs between Norderstedt M. and Ulzburg Süd (sometimes until Kaltenkirchen)
A3: should stay the same
WOW THAT TOOK LONG BRUH
Legit I'd be game for this
@@TFTSB Thanks lol
suddenly ending at Berliner Tor is always the best XD

At 00:21 A S5 arrives Ohlsdorf 00:02 Hauptbahnhof
I'm going to try to ride this!
22:38 You are absolutely right! Complaining about trains is one of the most German things you can do! Great Video!
Thank you so much!
Fun!
Thank you so much! I wish our S-Bahn network was as strong as the U-bahn network - even if the U4 feels very WIP still
@@TFTSB The U4 is so dope but it's also such a huge letdown considering how long it took them to build two stations and then another one, and how long it is taking them to build the Horner Geest extension (which just got delayed by another year).
Therefore, delays on one train will spread throughout the system.
do you have more info on that karlsruhe style tram run by students???
It's a future video I'm working on!
The ultimate horror was an S5 train to Ohlsdorf i saw close to midnight at Sternschanze last week
I'd love to get footage of that, that sounds so cursed
My train home. Its horrible. The train starts literally in the nowhere and still always arrives with massive delays
I feel your pain
Hello! To hone on the S6 - it seems a lot of it is up in the air. A lot of the Lurup branch, for instance, has had a ton of back and forth on it

that alone mad eme sub to this channel! But the content is good too 🙂

@@The4905 that's totally fair!
That was hilarious! If Dr. Robotnik was on my train, I would be scared
i bet dr. robotnik has a deutschlandticket. he may be evil, but at least he supports public transit!
Very fair takes! We all experience this network differently depending on where we are around Hamburg
As someone from the UK, I'd love to have such a terrible rail system as Germany. It'd be a massive improvement, at least outside of London.
would you rather ride an ICE or a Flixtrain?
ur so underated
Thank you so much!
Yeah the S bahn Hamburg is a bit odd at times
How does UA-cam guess my location? 🤨 (It is a pain through, having to take that train line on a daily to reach my university. It is always too late 😐)
I wish they'd go ahead and finally extend the U4 south or build some trams around Harburg again
If only there wasn't a housing crisis and I was rich enough to build a home 🥴🥴🥴
