    My dad has the original corp maps when they first built the lake and dam, fun fact if you like to scuba dive there are still roads over by Eden isle and even a cemetery with a small town still under the water! i got to scuba dive along a road to a stop sign and thought wow! Theres a old coal mine about 80 feet down also that master divers use, a ton of sunken boats and cars, really big fish like a 6 ft gar. Used to go almost every weekend as a kid growing up, best times relaxing and water skiing . JFK commissioned the area the day before he went to Texas and met his demise. Love that place and still like to go when our new family can!! thanks for the tour !!

    Thanks for the tour. I live 4 miles downstream from Shenango Reservoir in western PA; Army Corp flood control. Been under that dam, quite similar but much smaller. Kinzua Dam in northwestern PA on the Allegheny River is comparable to Greer - three large hydro generators, one is used as pumped storage up into a billion gallon pool for peak demand. And yes, it is chilly at the lowest tunnels in the dams. Also been through Hoover back in the '80s; massive by comparison.
    My neighbor tells me the Crappie in Arkansas are measured in pounds, we do them in inches here in PA 😎

    Great tour, thank you to Lindsey and crew, and Jay Townsend and the work of the US Army Corp of Engineers for making this all possible. The Dam is an Engineering Marvel and one Arkansas should be very proud of. Is there any talk about allowing private tours to interested groups? I'm a retired Electrical Engineer and the Dam is on my bucket list to tour.

    • @AllAboutArkansasTravels
      @AllAboutArkansasTravels  4 місяці тому

      Thank you so much for watching and for the kind comment! I am very appreciative to Mr. Townsend for making this possible. I know so many people have wanted to tour it but so much changed after 9-11. This was bucket list for me as well.
      It is my understanding that they will still take large groups to tour the dam if you call and schedule it. I asked about it years ago and they said they will take school groups and homeschool groups. I'm sure they would take any sort of group (church group, etc). I guess they just don't take individuals. But I would call the office and ask about it.

    Lindsey looked a little nervous when they got to the bottom of the dam. I can sympathize. I got nervous just watching it! This was a pretty cool documentary about the dam, which is just about as old as I am. I didn't know they had smaller generators built in just to power the dam. And those piano wire movement detectors look pretty clever. Usual high-end production values as usual.
    27:20 I disagree with Townsend about the government having to pay to run solar or wind generation. I think he's thinking about the tax breaks that clean energy projects can get, but tax breaks aren't the same as the government paying your operating expenses. Tax breaks just pad your profits, right? As far as I know, those wind farms in places like west Texas are going concerns.
    I certainly agree with him about the value of hydropower, and Arkansas is lucky to have such a resource.

    Water pressure increases directly with depth. Each foot of depth is 62.4 pounds of force. Each 33 feet of depth is equal to 1 atmosphere of pressure(14.7 psi) so at 33 feet of depth, there are 2 atmospheres of pressure acting on a body or 29.4 psi. Water is 62.4 pounds per cubic foot or 8.2 pounds per gallon. For all practical purposes, water is incompressible.
