  • I really didn't know what I was getting into with this lock and dam tour. Honestly, I thought it was going to be a quick viewing of the structure and a demonstration of how the lock gates open and close.
From the very beginning, it was much more than that and it was fascinating. So fascinating, in fact, that I had an extreme look of concentration on my face the entire time which was revealed to me in footage from my secondary camera. (insert face palm here)
I had no idea the importance of the locks and dams on the Arkansas River. I learned that one 15 barge tow can haul as much goods as 780 18-wheelers. I also learned that, without these dams, the Arkansas River would dry up in the summer months. I had no idea.
I often have followers who tell me that "the Army Corps of Engineers messed up a good fishing spot" when they put the dams in.
Did they? Because that fishing spot would have dried up without them.
Those dams actually created fishing lakes. LAKES. Lakes so important that fishing tournaments are held on them.
    All of that to say...
You're going to really like this video. Besides learning the purpose of the locks & dams and the mission of USACE in Arkansas and around the world, the Arthur V. Ormond Lock and Dam in Morrilton is just really cool.
It's so interesting to see what it looks like up close, how the lock chamber works, get a bird's eye view from the top of the dam (it's a looonnnnggg way down) AND check for aliens under the river.
Because...some people think they are hiding aliens down there...
Let me know what you think about this video! Filming it for you was a privilege and I hope you enjoy it!

That dam and park are one of my favorites.
I wish they took better care of the bathrooms and camping areas.
Toad Suck is really well cared for, I wish they would do the same at Morrilton.
    Great video y'all!
    Loved it.
I did a Dam tour years ago as a kid. Can't remember which but it was awesome.

@@WholeOtherLevelOutdoors I have never camped at that campground but we camp at toads up quite a bit. Toad suck is very well kept and I think it has a lot to do with the camp hosts. Unfortunately, this summer was their last. They have retired. I hope the new hosts are just as good.

Thank you for watching! I've been invited to film a tour of the Greers Ferry Dam possibly this summer. I have always wanted to go down inside it. If I get the chance, I will film everything and let you know!

I could have watched this video by now, but I'm near the end of this eclipse/beach/jury duty trip that's consumed most of April, and my brain's all tired and sweaty. I've had the video paused on that opening scene, just staring at it in between other tasks. It's so pretty.

@@AllAboutArkansasTravels On the road for 4 years and a month so far. Trying to decide whether to head back to Arkansas to look at properties now, or head back to New Mexico, save up some more money, and go house hunting in the fall.
Good pan on that opening scene. I still can't do pans very well. The speed always seems to be either too fast or too slow.

Have you ever watched the barges go through the locks?

    • @jbennett3578
      @jbennett3578 5 місяців тому

Not the big barges or big locks. I did see video of a canal boat going through a manually operated lock in the UK. The doors at each end have big levers you have to get out and move to open or close the lock.

We enjoy your videos!! Trying to find info on Sequoyah Park, across from this lock and dam, we’ve been to Cherokee COE Park just out of Morrelton but couldn’t find Sequoyah Park.

You know what, I'm glad you mentioned that. I've been researching it further and I think that is Cherokee. I was told it's Sequoyah but I can't find it online either. All my maps are telling me it's Cherokee. When you camped at Cherokee, did you have a view of the lock and dam?
