Stunning explanation.. The killer points made were the sharing experiences and suggesting some default settings (coupling, trigger level etc.), as much of us just want to get going.. Much obliged.
I have a really old HP O-scope from the 70's . still works. and now I can figure out how to use it instead of it just sitting there like a huge paperweight thanks 😀
The 'earth' wire is actually bonded to the neutral bus bar at the breaker panel. So there's also a potential risk of shorting the oscilloscope's ground lead to the 'hot' side of AC mains, if one is not careful. an isolation transformer is a good thing to have on hand.
i think, as a former oscilloscope Application Engineer, including international support at R&S, that oscilloscope training needs to capture the importance of probes and probing, as "first-order" ... many, many 'oscilloscope problems' are caused by bad probing selection and application... one can think of a probe like the lens on a camera; the best camera around can only capture an image as good as the lens allows, or a certain filter used... like camera lenses, different probes are available for different applications, and the different accessories provide more flexibility in application. BTW: rule #1, in my list, is to understand the problems caused by that good old "ground lead"! its inductance leads to "noisy power supplies", and a 100-135 MHz resonance with typical 10x passive probes! look for that "funny little spring" in probe accessories, it goes onto the ground "barrel", and lets you see a much more "real" signal...rant over!
My old analog scope recently passed away :( and I am awaiting the arrival of a new 200 MHz digital scope. Your video comparing the results from three scopes was a good into to digital scopes. Thank you.
I was gifted an old (at the time even) Hitachi oscilloscope from my Uncle with a master's in EE, around 1992. It was a completely analog scope, 2 ch, 25 Mhz, CRT. I wish i knew the model number. I spent hours playing with measuring the speaker out from my boom box's speakers and various circuits from small appliances and anything I could disassemble without getting in trouble from around the house. I was trying to understand how to use it. I wish I had this video to help explain the basics at that time. Still, it was fun. Too bad a roommate after highschool that worked in a TV/VCR/etc repair shop ended up taking it from me.
When we measured the floating DC tacho feedback signal on old servomotors we would use an isolating transformer on the CRO to avoid altering motor speed.
Digital oscilloscopes integrate the most common protocols, except that manufacturers restrict their devices. If you want to unlock a protocol, you must enter a license key provided by the manufacturer into the device interface (the price of which is prohibitive for an individual, especially if they want several protocols), which is calculated from the serial number. For an after-sales service, an R&D department of a company, or a training center, this is not a problem, since they can negotiate the price of the license keys, if they have a large enough fleet of oscilloscopes of the same brand.
Mr. Carlson! Great to run into you! The knowledge you share in your videos (including your patreon electronics course) is found nowhere else! One of my favorite channels.
I already know how to use oscilloscopes, including the memory ones that can capture a spike, I have also used hardware debugging tools I bet whoever put the list to UA-cam together haven’t seen my cv, alternatively didn’t understand what it said. I frequently meet people like that even among recruiters…!
Hello, in our oscilloscope the lines are making very quickly up and down and the data can't be getted correct.. please suggest some solution. It could be problem of cabel or level.please
Analog scopes give a truer waveform, and often show noise on a signal more accurately, because they’re not smoothing out steps in the X axis. If you’re feeding a known frequency into something then measuring it on the scope, no calculators really required, and the mental maths for most of the time divisions isn’t too bad anyway.
Why this dude calling the portable asyloscope "very old"?! I bet it didn't even have one radio lamp inside! The very old I had to use being only 36 now was as large as of the largest Samsonite you can find and waited so much that you have to use both hands when placing it on your desk!
Sir, maybe you can help me. I've been looking for a way to use my Siglent sds1202x-e to watch a battery drain. I'm trying to prove that the battery is draining under a load. Is this possible? Thank you!!
What's amusing me is that this video starts with a ridiculously fanciful advertisement for a heater which clearly doesn't obey the laws of physics. I'd say to that advertiser "you've picked the wrong audience,"
You forgot the most important procedur before even using the Oscilloscope, namely to calibrate the visualization by using the integrated 1kHz rectangular reference signal 😂
As a beginner oscilloscope user, I found this video incredibly helpful. It solved several mysteries for me. Thanks!
I have been using oscilloscopes for years, and no one has ever broke it down for me like that. I defiantly learned a bit thank you .
Thanks for teaching younger generations the basics of electronics and measurements ❤
Nice staff. This was an eye opener to me in the oscilloscope world. High five to the mentor

Excellent information, very well explained and presented. Thank you.

Instruments like meter and osciloscops are the base of knowledge in electronic, so yours importance is simply much big. Very thank you teatcher 👍
🤝.
much

HI Aaron, I simply would like to thank you , it is a wonderful video specifically for a beginner like me .thanks again.

GreAt video thankyou very much, from Brisbane Queensland Australia
Thank you for showing the basics
The best explanation I’ve seen.

Excellent video, Congratulations

Thank you Aaron this helps a lot.
Thanks for the video. Very well presented.

Very clear, useful video; Thank you!
Thanks man. Great video
Excellent presentation!
Thank you… I’m heading back to your channel to check for spectrum analyzer videos.
Good video, thanks!
Awesome thanks 😊
Extremely well done! Thanks a ton!

Great explanation 🎉
You have a great channel im learning
Very good video. I wish that you could do more videos just like it.
👍Helpful and interesting 👍
Did you know: That HP scope has "Tetris" in it? Push: print/utility, and hold button 2 and 3 down (at the same time) for s short bit.
I tried and it didn't work

great video, thanks!
Thank you, well done !
Cool that you had some sine wave action going on the window blinds behind you! 😄
The lecture is very well done.
Thank you, it was helpful.
Great video!!
Pretty cool. Thanks.
Thank you 😊
Thank you so Much !
Dude thanks

thanks at 60 i dont know if i will ever own one but i hope to and then the learning will begin.

👍👍
how could I connect 220 volts ac to an oscilloscope?
Old oscilloscopes have three digits in their model numbers like 535 or 465, good video though.
Old school scopes needed a calculator to actually get your answers . These are a lot nicer to use .

give me an old HP instrument any day (as long as we are not talking any modern day printer or laptop crap)

The topic is very very important particularly these days ! But the presentation is not upto the mark !
Thanks a lot for this information 🎉🎉
thank you very much!
