Ricki is the only singer, that can make a barely audible whisper make the hair on your neck stand up, and at the same time, evoke so much emotion....Incredible, unique and timeless talent.
When Ricki performs live and the audience is just right, she'll let you in with a spellbinding performance like this. No one in the world remotely like her.💗
Saw her do this back on SNL in 79. Went out and bought the cassette and fell in love with her music. Listening to this 42 years later moves me just as much as it did back then.
Ah I seem to remember when Rickie Lee appeared with those first 3 records, I could not stop listening to them, "Last Chance", "Company", "We Belong Together", "Rainbow Sleeves", , , , love to get lost in "Coolsville" with Rickie, , ,
@ijustwannabe21 I like the darker stuff she does. Last Chance Texaco and this from her first album just blow me away. Company is good. So too "On Saturday Afternoons in 1963". Girl was a total hipster and belonged in the Beat era of the late fifties.
Yes nuance is that poetic ability to write in such a way that the listener/reader sees something new every time they 👂 or 👀. MS. Jones had that ability. So rare. J and b and me sounds close but it ain't the same...new meaning now that I look back. Wish I knew then what I kinda sorta know now. JB is still the essence of Coolsville. 1st love is just that way.
This is the vision, the vintage, the vibe. This is the prose, the poetry, the style I see whenever I think of Rickie Lee... ummm.. Miss Jones, if you're nasty.
I think this is LA ... 1992? Its nice for people to see where so much of what the girls do now, and take for granted .. was planted... from jazz to pop... the real thing eh. and o boy the way those rock star gloves as fashion staple were first done on stage by RLJ back in 1979.
She's been this addict's sound track through the gutter, the pain and the joy. Nobody leaves Coolsville without scars but the scars on our hands and His, save our fellow addicts from the pied piper, Pan.
@bendbadgersteve hi.....you were right about the junk. Cant sing the blues without a few miles on ya....her studio version is better in some ways and some ways not. If you want to cry....check out "Company" or "Skeletons" if you wanna groove hit that you tube link to her doing Weasel in Paris.
i saw this in 1981 in California on SNL. Been looking for it ever since, only took 43 years to find it; it's still magic!
This is not the SNL performance.
Ricki is the only singer, that can make a barely audible whisper make the hair on your neck stand up, and at the same time, evoke so much emotion....Incredible, unique and timeless talent.
How is it Rickie was only 25 years old when she performed this song? Somber. Deep. That soulful sax. A masterpiece.
When Ricki performs live and the audience is just right, she'll let you in with a spellbinding performance like this. No one in the world remotely like her.💗
She's my very favorite. No one else is this fantastic in my opinion
Amazing performance. I’ve never seen such a powerful performance in a whisper
Saw her do this back on SNL in 79. Went out and bought the cassette and fell in love with her music. Listening to this 42 years later moves me just as much as it did back then.
That SNL appearance made her an overnight sensation. Everybody was blown away by her sultry performance.
A beautiful Ode to her great romance, Tom Waits, and the baritone growl to accentuate her love.
Anybody that listens to this and doesn't hear and feel the pain of a lost love, has never felt the pain of love at all.
Thanks for sharing this amazing performance ❤️
The quieter she gets, the more powerful she is. Damn!
That whisper. Fucking brilliant. No one is more evocative than RLJ in her performance.
RLJ is so far ahead of her time... friggin' absolutely scary-incredible sensitive beautiful powerful aggressive artist... love you!
love seeing this. This is from the tour for Pop Pop, which was about 1992...
You are simply the best. Your book is outstanding as well!
Love the moment when she sings and mugs up like Tom Waits - if he ever saw this, I bet he got the jitters at her power.
Rickie Lee is simply the best!
God, I love her.
an out of this world performance. i am sad i did not see this earlier
A romantic ode to her great love, Tom Waits, with an added baritone growl for emphasis.
This was the Wiltern show in L.A. in 1992.
Such a beautiful song
Bad ass Rickie lee....mahalo

Very moving. I've been watching a few RLJ videos. This is among the very best. 4029 views - It deserves 4 million.
Amazing perfect performance...thanks for the post!!
my favourite; not many songs are darker...
Nuance! That is big. The difference between good music and great music, in my opinion, is nuance.
Yes nuance is that poetic ability to write in such a way that the listener/reader sees something new every time they 👂 or 👀. MS. Jones had that ability. So rare.

"The skies in Arizona....."
Stupendous Gave me chills.

Extraordinary.
Rickie Lee is my kinda goil !!!
This is the Best.Thing.Ever Thank you.
This song has junk written all over it. An amazingly heavy performance just dripping with nuance. Totally cool...sville.

Ohhhh dear Rickie, bless your heart with that sax next to you, focus on the sex, the song of love....
GOD BLESS LEE. AMEN
I don't know what I was listening to back than ..... But it should have been....try her Autumn Leaves
If you like RLJ, you might like Laura Nyro, too.
That was....sweet...
I can't find the right box to put her in. Jazz, kind off... Rock, not really but sometimes. Pop? Sort of...Oh! I Found it......Class Act!!!!!
Much love rlj ,beatnik?
thank you Rickie lee
Unique is all I can think of?
Nice..
Unbelievable
Thankfully she snatched this and escaped coolsville before it killed her

What were the skies like when you were young ?
They went on forever... "Little Fluffy Clouds"~ by The ORB with/using snipetts of a Rickie interview, Brilliant!
There's a tipping point on performance art -
Yoko Ono fell off the edge.
RLJ cool-ly walks that thin line.
Ono was never anywhere even near art. She's a poseur and she stinks on ice.

This is 1992 not 1979.
