I hope that one day you find a way to bring back some iteration of Steve’s Hat Picks and Steve’s Dang Its, even if it need be condensed and under a different title, because the way you talk about this game is so infectious and makes me appreciate things in other players that I hadn’t seen before. Yes, MacKinnon, Makar, and Rantanen are definitely dangerous, but let's not forget about Valeri Nichushkin. If we're going to call Miro Heiskanen underrated, then Nichushkin should be right up there with him. He was lethal in the first round. 7 goals in 5 games is crazy! If he keeps that intensity up and the Avs go on to win the Cup, he could be a contender for the Conn Smythe.
Thank you for bringing this up! I was surprised that he only gave credit to the top guys (and really only Mack and Cale, not even Mikko) when Nichushkin was leading the playoffs in goals, and having really fun stats like the fact that the Avs are 18-2 whenever Lehky scores a goal. Also Mittlestadt??? My god am I loving that kid. Not to mention the Bourque-esque storyline with Parise- whose also been incredible (how cool would it be if he can be our new Helm?).
If the Avs can bring the same intensity that they did to the 1st round I think we are undefeatable in a 7 game series.

@@yen_tihW Avs are much deeper than people realize. If they a) watch more Colorado games, b) do their homework before analyzing their game, they'd know. Lehkonen, Parise, Wood, Cogliano and mainly Casey Mittlestadt! MacKinnon called out Mittlestadt to be the best player of the series!

Most common reason people picked the Jets over the Avs was goaltending advantage & depth. Well, Georgiev outplayed Hellebuyck pretty comfortably and Colorado had 28 goals with 12 different scorers, 8 of which were multi-goal.
I think it's a good thing for the Canucks to be everyone's underdogs. Nobody expects them to win which means no pressure; and a helluva lot of bulletin board and locker room material for them to galvanize over.
Fun fact: McDavid has as many points in these playoffs as the entire Leafs core 4 forwards

It's 2024 and still media outside of Colorado think that the Avs are only made up of 1 forward line + Cale Makar.
Never mind Nichushkin had, what, 7 goals and Lehky had 5. Will they repeat that? Probably not, but the fact Steve didn't even mention the fact the Avs just randomly seemed to find depth at the right time.... oh well, hopefully the stars sleep on it the same way for 4 games.

The Avalanche utterly dismantled the presumptive Vezina winner and the top scoring defense in the league. Jets had a full 10 more wins on the season than the Knights, and that's with Stone playing around half of the season.
@anthonyfaccaro7118 the Avs out hit the stars in every game this season. Regular season is different than the playoffs but that's all we got to go on right now. As for depth, you also have Parise, Trenin, Colton, Cogs, Manson all making contributions one way or the other. Kiviranta, when he played, looked good, even if it didn't translate to Stat sheet items.
Oilers fan here. Not underestimating the Canucks at all. This is gonna go to Game 7. Just not sure who will win it.

That game where the Canucks got only 12 shots. They had more high danger scoring chances than the Preds had that game. After Demko was injured, they were able to adapt to the Preds game and beat the Preds at their own game. The Canucks beat the Oilers 3-1 with Desmith in net and first place in the Pacific on the line, so I think this will come down to a coin toss.

You realize that reg season means nothing - especially what happened at the beginning of the year! Canucks are a very good team, and are very well coached, and I can't see a scenario where there is a 'blowout' game. I think all five games will be close (yes I said 5) and Oilers come out on top. But we'll see and looking forward to a great series (btw - I thought Calgary / Edm would be a great series too, but after losing game one 9 to 7, Oilers ripped off 4 straight against the Flames and Kane literally neutralized Matt Tkachuk, just saying)
I'm here thinking those Canucks predictions will come back to haunt everyone. At the very least it will go to 7 games. Canucks are not one trick ponies like the kings, and they're resilient AF.

I think the bruins are going to surprise everybody and put up way more of a flight than anyone expects. I think bruins and Panthers ends up being the toughest, nastiest series of the second round. 7 games, multiple ot games. It's a toss up to me.
I can definitely see it being the nastiest, unless Rangers have some Trouba and Rempe specials. Stars and Avs could get ugly, but I think that's less likely now than it was a couple of years ago.
Panthers have only gotten better since last year and they are at full health. I think panthers in 5 but I’ll say 6 for a good series.

Bruins are 4-0 against the Panthers this season. Panthers were also 2-2 against the Bruins in 2023 and were the only team in the league that didn’t have a losing record against them

That game 7 was a galvanizing moment for the Bruins I truly believe if Swayman plays the way he’d played and we can score some goals we can win this series. The Bruins are playing with house money at this point after almost choking again so either way I’m a happy bruins fan. Love the show bud. Sorry about your leafs. That was an amazing series

People tend to forget, since the 1971 expansion, The Canucks have been here many times before.
Including 3 attempts at the cup.
(VS the Islanders in 1982, Rangers in 1994, and Bruins in 2011) though they didn't win those matchups, they were still there.
I just gave a quick search of Vancouver's record.
They made it to the 2nd round 6 times since 2000, including making it to 3rd round, and once for the cup.
11 wins outa 28 1st round appearances since the expansion in 1971.
Including the 3, Stanley Cup attempts.
None of that means sh!t. This a different team. Been there before?

Steve and others should probably understand that Colorado dismissed the Jets with its depth lines. Mikko Rantanen, Cale Makar, and Nathan MacKinnon each had two goals - same as Zach Parise. In the high scoring context of the series, they were not driving the scoring. Instead, regular second liners Nichushkin and Lehkonen led the goal tally, and several 3rd/4th liners and even a defenseman equaled the superstars' 2-goal count.
They will have to learn at some point, right?
If dallas had played winnipeg, it would be the same way for dallas, hell nashville could have scored 5 the way the jets crapped the bed.

Not giving the Canucks enough credit imo. They can play that offensive style and the shut-down defensive style which will help them against Edmonton.
Edmonton has also been great at shutting down their opponents. They were tied with Nashville with 5v5 GA against, except they can also score among the most goals in the league.

Don’t sleep on Van. If they can stay out of the box, it’s gonna be a lot more hotly contested. A fiery hot McJesus : 3 even strength points. A struggling Petey: 2 even strength points. In fact I’d argue that having Miller and Boeser and potentially Petey, with a dynamic Hughes and rangy physical Zads, Myers, Cole, Soucy - and a Silovs that is the most chill dude on Planet earth in high pressure situations could make for a very interesting playoff matchup.
Sleeping on Van after round 1. Goaltending bailed them out much of the series. Mediocre team in almost everything except goaltending. Streaky good players. Only play fast when they want to it seems. Annoying team due to their weak effort at times but I hope they prove me wrong.

You know that was a really long way for Steve to say he didn’t watch a second of the Avs Jets series. Val and Lehky both have more points than Dallas’ leading scorer and weren’t even mentioned and 8 players recorded multiple goals. Dallas on the other hand squeezed past the second wild card who entered the playoffs mediocre at best and never showed anything more. Avs in 6.
I find it weird that so many people are discounting the Canucks.
The Preds were the best OFFENSIVE team in the last 20 games of the season. The Canucks beat them, they obviously can handle tremendous offense.
Yeah none of them are McDavid or Drai, but damn it if the Canucks didn't just beat the hottest offense in the league in Round 1.
Except the preds’ offence looked absolutely anemic. Unable to set up anything on the power play, terrible zone entries, just zero offence. They hit themselves out of a playoff series trying to play physical instead of playing hockey.

I love the no love for my team the Canucks cause no one seems to understand that Edmonton sacrifices defensively to make offensive plays if it comes down to that I feel 7 games Vancouver that said goaltending could be a deciding factor.
Edmonton and playing bad defense is an old and dated narrative. They have the third best 5v5 goal differential in the league, even including their awful first month. Edmonton is pretty stingy defensively.

What always shocks me is how no one talks about how the west has 3 of the 4 best defence men in the league with makar, miro and Hughes
West feasted on the 3 worst teams in the league. East was much more competitive. 2 series with the most hits in rd one was the 4 atlantic teams. East teams are more built for playoff success. Stanley cup final might be very lopsided as i feel east will win.
The heck are you talking about the Dallas and Vegas series was way more competitive than the Toronto series even though they both went seven. The both New Yorks series we all knew should have been sweeps and the beaten down lightning barely put up a fight making the West I’d say more competitive

These are some lit series.
Vegas looked absolutely atrocious in that series and yet it still took Dallas 7 games to beat them. Colorado world's above Vegas this year. Yet if you ask anyone outside of Colorado fans, the Avs consist of one line and Cale Makar.
The Avs face rolled Winnipeg, who was largely considered to be the deepest team in the West, with the best defense and goal tending.
Yet everyone is picking Dallas here lol. I'm looking forward to incessantly rubbing this in your faces when the Avs take this series in 5.
In 2022 the Avs went 12-2 over the first three rounds and the national media still doubted they’d be able to “hang” with Tampa. We all know how that went.
Last season the team iced an AHL roster for half the season (or more) and were also badly missing the second line center that Kadri was in the cup winning season. It wasn’t surprising they lost to Seattle.
This year’s team is stacked, especially after the trade deadline pickups. Middlestat was one of their best players in round one. Let the national media keep doubting them. We’ll see how that goes again 😂

Revisiting this garbage take was the highlight of my morning. Man when you don't know what you are talking about it's really easy to make a complete ass of yourself isn't it?

Dallas is a good team with a lot of good players, but the idea that somehow Colorado is not just as deep as them is nonsense. People get enamored with the top 3 and ignore everything else....and when you compare both Colorado and Dallas to a team like Florida (who everyone fawns over) both have better scoring depth
Glad Steve keeps picking against us! Georgiev took less than a game to get locked in this time around...Dallas is gonna have a little trouble coming to altitude I know that much but much respect to them and I see this being a great series.
People REALLY sleeping on how much better the Oilers team defence is this year. That (EDIT: 16) game win streak was a team defence streak.

16 game streak, they lost to Vegas after the All star break.
It was 16, but they also won 8 straight right before it, lost 3 then won 16, so they went 24-3 in a 27 game stretch. Many games were won with a low scoring, defensive minded structure. Paul Coffey turned it around once the coaching change happened.
Preds also went on a long winning streak during the season (to rocket them up to #7), how'd that work out for them.

Dallas' lack of offense made Vegas look a lot better than what they were. Vegas was an 8th seed and barely made the playoffs for a reason. Colorado made Winnipeg look a lot worse than they really were. Winnipeg dominated this season for a reason. Avs in 6 or less.

The Canes haven't been playing well these whole playoffs. They were just that much better than NYI, that they could play poorly and still win. They could stand a shake-up.
