Hah man this is something that should be mandatory in driving school, no one taught me this. When I got my first car a 91 VW Polo, was a bit battered but was super cheap and good for getting me to work it had issues going into reverse, all sorts of clunking, screeching and got forbid the sounds it made. I figured the solution to it and it was going to reverse slowly, if it doesn't click right, back to neutral and so on until it goes in smoothly. I never understood the issue, I just thought it was an old car and many people even mechanics told me the same thing. Fast forward I am in my brand new VW T Roc and would look at that, SAME PROBLEM, although at a much lower scale. This video just opened my eyes. Thank you very much!

Thank you sir. You know there's alot of things I do when driving that I learned from you. The best one is keeping your clutch for 4 seconds before releasing completely. I used to throw my clutch until you taught me the right way. Your videos helps alot. Thank you 👍
Thank you yet again, since passing I bought myself a 6-speed 1999 MX5 which is notorious for not finding reverse. Your guide will hopefully save me from some tricky situations when the gearbox decides to be awkward again❤
This was very helpful. I encounter this more often than I like on my car. I always thought it was caused by the gear lever not slotting in completely or me not clutching in all the way or the fact that my car's hella old. I'll remember to ease up slotting into reverse the next time. Thanks!

The synchro ring is what slow the gears down to allow the engagement of the gears. I recommend a 3 count to allow for proper engagement. 1 potato 2 potato 3 potato. It works every time.
Thanks a ton for the video, I just got my first car, a ford focus MK1 2000 1.8L petrol; and the reverse gear selection is quite painful, it doesnt always wanna go in, more like the 50/50 case you said. I was searching for fixes online and your video showed up, seems like this is a skill issue. Gotta change the transmission oil I reckon. Also Thank you so much for all the videos, you really helped me with passing my drivers license test here in Luxembourg :D
Your vids have been so helpful as I've learnt a lot that wasn't thought or well understood in a driving school. Trying to reverse uphill I've rolled forward a couple of times & quickly held on the brakes then took to neutral & entered the gear again & it went well, I always wondered if at first I entered a wrong gear, thanks Sir!
Thanks for the detailed explanation! This happens to my car too, but the grinding sound only happen occaionally. I know that's really harming the gear box but don't know why it happened and how to avoid it. Thanks for your suggestion I will now wait a few seconds before select the reverse gear!
Richard. I’ve judder in a low mileage Astra. Thought clutch. But crunching into reverse. I’m thinking clutch is tired due a new one ? Juddertaking off first. And an every other crunch into reverse however slow go in.
And if you keep ending up in 1st gear when you wanted reverse, there might be a lever on the back of the gear stick that you have to lift up first 🙃 when I got my first car this took me a solid 10 minutes to figure out as I kept inching further forwards wondering where reverse gear has gone 🤦♂️

actually there's another way to prevent the grind. select any forward gear which should stop the transmission and then select reverse. i keep forgetting this and i grind my reverse gear all the time.

thanks for the info. In my manual BMW 3 series, the reverse gear disengages or slips back to neutral by itself, it's happening very often now, any idea why ? please
If it didn't want to go in reverse I usually just lifted the clutch a tiny amount while pushing the gear lever hard. I never heard a grinding noise with that. But I can see how that is probably depending on the type of car. So I guess don't do as I do :) Now I basically only drive automatics so its not really a concern for me anymore.

Nearly all car's would have had a bit of grinding here and there. Try to avoid it as much as you can but there are usually magnets in the gearbox to catch the metal particles. If it's working fine I wouldn't worry about it.
I selected reverse gear before coming to a stop in a 2012 Volkswagen polo and to my horror I heard a grinding noise I was confused at first because I had pressed in the clutch fully in, the thing is that the gearbox received power from the spinning wheels and that made it grind, no synchros on reverse, must stop before selecting reverse
This might sound silly, but sometimes when Im at standstill and fully press the clutch and select 4th gear (not releasing the clutch at any point) I hear that crunching sound for a milisecond. I know youre not supposed to select such high gear while stationary but I thought you could select whatever as long as you dont release the clutch....?
Can also be damaged reverse gear. Mine (2002 Citroen) quite often doesn't go into reverse and needs some help with alignment, i.e. a touch of first gear, stop and then it works.
In my driving instructor's Kia Ceed I've never struggled with that, maybe it's because in his car in order to reach Reverse Gear you need to press a button located in the stick instead of pushing the stick down.

My jeep will grind reverse almost every time i try and its picky about first but i found a sweet spot gotta get it while your rolling really slow but before you stop
So u got an ibiza 2004 then ibiza 2010 and this car u teachin in now is a seat leon 2014 ? U seam to like seats ? Are they tgat good compared to others of same category like fiesta polos golfs ??
I had a 2003 Ibiza. I think they're good cars for my needs. Different cars suit different people. At the moment though my favourite segment C car is the new Mazda 3. I'm not a fan of the new Leon's design and interior.
Does your clutch going bad has anything to do with this? Because here we get told by the mechanics that the clutch is worn out everytime we hear a crunch. My Hyundai Xcent now often gets a crunch on reverse and was told that a clutch needs to be done.
I Love your video's man, i just want to ask you about something I'm considering Buying a 2018 2L turbo diesel Seat leon fr should i go for it? also it is going to be my first car .
How about when I stopped my car and press down the clutch then try to shift in 1, 2, and then 3 gear. The first two gears are easy to shift in but I often find it hard to shift into 3 gear.
That's unusual. Normally higher gears are easier to select. But when the wheels are still don't read into it too much. As long as it goes into 3rd fine when you're moving then it should be OK.
Question: I've seen alot of drivers especially commercial taxi drivers trying to quickly maneuver hardly come to a full stop before selecting reverse & back to 1st gear & if you're like me you'd like it & do it too, does that mean all these guys have been doing the wrong thing & damaging their gears?
@@cv4809 I'll never understand why some people feel superior, because they drive manual. If you actually have a license you would understand that driving is not just about changing gears it's a small percentage. Paying attention to the road, analysing the situation, understanding what going on on the street, defensive driving etc etc etc is a HUGE part of driving. Braking, changing gears and parking is certainly not all there is to driving. I live in a country where you can only get your license in a manual, but there are still many accidents, because of people like you who think driving is just about steering the car🤦🏽♀️. I could care less if a person is driving an auto or manual as long as they are safe and adhere to the rules of the road.
@@mbsmile78 There's nothing specific to autos that you need to learn. If you can drive a manual, you can drive an automatic. Literally just put the car in D and drive with the accelerator and breaks. You can never stall, and you don't have to shift. The only advice I can give is consider using the lower gears for very long downhill roads. (www.allstate.com/tr/car-insurance/safety-tips-mountain-driving.aspx ) Also, don't coast with the car in neutral if you're using an auto, just stay in drive. Even at traffic lights, just stay in drive and hold the breaks.
i just had my clutch replaced. but i still get that crunch when i select reverse when the car is cold. any idea to why, should not be the clutch or maybe the mechanic did something wrong
The crunch into reverse is unlikely because of the clutch. Only select reverse when you are completely still and have had the clutch fully down for at least 3 seconds.
was driving earlier and i was approaching a roundabout i was going from 3rd to 2nd but selected reverse by mistake( dont ask how!) and heard that grinding noise!
is it true that if you’re on your driving test and someone flashes their light for you to go and you go is an instant fail? some people have failed for this, doesn’t really make sense to me as if they’re slowing down and holding up traffic to help you make progress and you don’t go that would make more sense?
That's definitely not true. Only go of it's safe though, just because someone flashes their lights doesn't mean it's safe, someone else's could be coming.
oh man, when i put it in revese for the first time, i slowly let out the clutch until it was engaged and thought "why am i not moving" and then heard crunching... too gentle with the gear stick
Excellent explanation as always. I did have a query. Is this issue more prevalent in gearboxes with R (reverse gear) close to 1 or R close to highest gear ? Incidentally this happened to me when I was reversing a relative's car (which was pretty old) but I thought it was something I did. That car had R close to 5 (the highest gear).
It's odd that you've been able to book the practical for when you have an expired theory. You will need to pass the theory test again before the practical test.
@@ConquerDriving I feared that was the case. It's the DVSA re-booking my test that was meant to be in February. I guess they don't take the date of the theory test into account for that.
Hi Everybody I have a specific question according to car engines fabrication...In every car engines, do gears have the same amount of teeth? Could be two different cars that includes similar transmission
@@ConquerDriving Thanks for replying I just wanted to make sure I got it right so the answer is There are many different transmission with different teeth depending on the car model and there are plenty of transmissions that are shared with others car models could be two cars have the same transmission as automatic or either manual...🙏Please really need it
So you're telling me the solution is more patience 😅. My old 82 corolla used to go into reverse magnificently while still rolling forward. Any 2015 Toyota doesn't work the same. It just won't.
WOW ... somebody talking logic on youtube !!! . PLEASE READ EVERYBODY !!!....(I will get to the important bit asap) . Usually when going for reverse , if you just "touch" 2nd gear and "buzz" the syncro, the gears will stop rotating. (Make sure the car mat isn't stopping the pedal going all the way down ! . (IMPORTANT BIT) . If your car simply fails to engage reverse .... (you may have jumped down a curb?) .... . Engage ALL forward gears....(including 5th gear) .... just lifting the clutch pedal high enough to feel a slight "urge" to go forward ?........ then it may very well engage reverve ! . REASON - The reverse gear itself could have just got slightly "stuck" , and you have now given it a chance to slide down the shaft to " rest" .... (well it's worth a try) .
I step on the clutch while in motion and my gears lash I can’t figure out what Is wrong. Rebuilt the transmission and 4 thousand dollars later and it’s still doing it. I need help
That is odd, maybe the clutch isn't fully disengaging but I'm sure you would be aware of that. Perhaps the gearbox is still bad. Not a lot else it can be unless you're not pressing the clutch all the way down.
@@ConquerDriving oh I’m pressing the clutch all the way down and the gear box is completely rebuilt I just spent 4 thousand dollars on that. Could the clutch not be disengaging properly and it’s a bad slave cylinder maybe??
My Toyota hilux 2019 model 6 gears always spins tyres and makes noise and the gear shift locks itself when I make a mistake of selecting wrong gear let's say from 5 directly to gear 1 is it normal
I'm not sure exactly what's happening to be able to comment. But wheel spin is normally too much gas and lifting the clutch up to quickly. It shouldn't happen simply because you have selected 1st gear when you're less than 5mph.

hi. would you be able to do a comparison in reversing or parking techniques with a saloon vs hatchback? i own a saloon and sometimes it is difficult to judge on how far i can go back as the boot protrudes further from the rear window and i dont really have parking sensors. i just passed my driving test the other week but i watched most of your videos to become better as i still have some drivers anxiety and feel like i dont deserve to have a license just yet. thanks 🙂
Maybe this video can help: ua-cam.com/video/uMGpAo-flbE/v-deo.html

Does accidentally grinding gear once in a while cause damage?
lol big thnx i buy used SEAT Toledo 2014 and i tought my gear box is demage. But if i do what u say all works fine. thnx mate.
Can i do this on my lexus is 250 2007 model ??
You can engage the synchro in a new car by putting it into any gear first, then quickly going straight into reverse and it should go in easily.
Does your clutch going bad has anything to do with this? Because here we get told by the mechanics that the clutch is worn out everytime we hear a crunch. My Hyundai Xcent now often gets a crunch on reverse and was told that a clutch needs to be done.
It can be a clutch related issue, but not due to wear, if the clutch is damaged then it will affect all gears.
I Love your video's man, i just want to ask you about something
I'm considering Buying a 2018 2L turbo diesel Seat leon fr should i go for it?
also it is going to be my first car .
Thank you. If it's in your budget and you like it then that's what matters most.
@@ConquerDriving it is in my budget i just asked you if it is a good car as you own one also is it decent for new driver?
cheers from france
How about when I stopped my car and press down the clutch then try to shift in 1, 2, and then 3 gear. The first two gears are easy to shift in but I often find it hard to shift into 3 gear.
That's unusual. Normally higher gears are easier to select. But when the wheels are still don't read into it too much. As long as it goes into 3rd fine when you're moving then it should be OK.
Very useful video..👍
Question: I've seen alot of drivers especially commercial taxi drivers trying to quickly maneuver hardly come to a full stop before selecting reverse & back to 1st gear & if you're like me you'd like it & do it too, does that mean all these guys have been doing the wrong thing & damaging their gears?
Some gearboxes have a synchro on reverse so you don't need to come to a complete stop.
Bro plz make video on how to stop wheel spin or slip while driving in uphill driving
don't add too much gas
Wheel spinning uphill suggests the car or tyres not appropriate for the hill. Or you are trying to accelerate too quick.
Can you say why the reverse gear is very fast even without pressing gas pedal?
Some engines add gas for you when in reverse to help you reverse without pressing the gas pedal.
@Conquer Driving howcome many driving instructors only do Manual, would love Auto video lessons.
There are more videos to make about Manual and over 90% of people in the UK still learn manual.
Please can you do a comprehensive one off video on Automatic driving or do you only have Manual car. Really like your videos and commentary.
If you need lessons for driving auto, you should probably not drive at all
@@cv4809 I'll never understand why some people feel superior, because they drive manual.
Also, don't coast with the car in neutral if you're using an auto, just stay in drive.
Very helpful thanks
I don’t seem to have ever encountered this? Idk if it’s cuz I only have a 5 speed gearbox so I don’t need to press down or anything.
It probably has a synchro on reverse so you won't get the problem.
is it true that if you’re on your driving test and someone flashes their light for you to go and you go is an instant fail? some people have failed for this, doesn’t really make sense to me as if they’re slowing down and holding up traffic to help you make progress and you don’t go that would make more sense?
That's definitely not true. Only go of it's safe though, just because someone flashes their lights doesn't mean it's safe, someone else's could be coming.
Thank you! Problem solved!
oh man, when i put it in revese for the first time, i slowly let out the clutch until it was engaged and thought "why am i not moving" and then heard crunching... too gentle with the gear stick
That can happen, sometimes it's easier to put it into gear than other times. Most cars are like this.
Thank you Sir for sharing
''it doesn't want to go in first time'' - that's what she said
Excellent explanation as always.
I haven't noticed a difference.
Much respect.
So it’s not necessarily an issue with the gearbox or something
what is the fix for the grinding?
There is no fix for reverse gear grinding because it's not broken it's just how it's designed. However, you can avoid it as explained in the video
But if you mean "what is the fix if you grind your gears away", it would be a very expensive gearbox rebuild.
Neautral, hand break up. Clutch wait move in to reverse. If failed do it again
thank you adamc
Hi CD. My theory test expires on the 7th august but my twice delayed practical test is booked for the 13th. What should I do?
It's odd that you've been able to book the practical for when you have an expired theory. You will need to pass the theory test again before the practical test.
@@ConquerDriving I feared that was the case. It's the DVSA re-booking my test that was meant to be in February. I guess they don't take the date of the theory test into account for that.
Hi Everybody I have a specific question according to car engines fabrication...In every car engines, do gears have the same amount of teeth? Could be two different cars that includes similar transmission
They are many different transmissions with different teeth but there are plenty of transmissions that are shared with many different models of car.
Some older cars seem to have a synchro on reverse, new cars don't seem to.
Thanks sir
So what happen if im in 1st gear and directly move to reverse (while pressing clutch only once) ?
That's fine, it's best to hold the clutch down for a second before selecting reverse though.
That's fine, it's best to hold the clutch down for a second before selecting reverse though.
@@ConquerDriving Thanks sir !
When i can't get reverse, i select 1st and then it goes into reverse or let the car roll a bit and then it selects reverse
That also works.
WOW ... somebody talking logic on youtube !!!
.
PLEASE READ EVERYBODY !!!....(I will get to the important bit asap)
.
Usually when going for reverse , if you just "touch" 2nd gear and "buzz" the syncro, the gears will stop rotating.
(Make sure the car mat isn't stopping the pedal going all the way down !
.
(IMPORTANT BIT)
.
(well it's worth a try)
.
@@ConquerDriving the front wheels just slide with no gas added to it because I don't add gas while changing gears maybe I lift the clutch way up quickly
i don´t know why but when i first start my car it does a noice when putting reverse but after a while driving it doesn´t does the crunch noise. Putting reverse slowly and without moving doesn´t solve it
Perhaps your clutch isn't disengaging properly? Make sure the clutch is fully down and wait 2 seconds after pressing the clutch down to put it in reverse.
still in my first week of driving manual and that awful sound happened when i was about to leave today and i just switched cars i was so worried😂😂
