Kid Icarus totally deserves a new game. I've been playing it again these days to keep improving the point-power up-scoring system. NES Kid Icarus is a a gem. I enjoy the soundtrack a lot. This video is awesome. Greetings!
Could not agree more! Hopefully Sakurai was actually hinting at a comeback in his UA-cam video last year. Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, a lot of people are also unaware that it was Nintendo's first game to use a password system when it released on the NES which is pretty cool.

My history with the kid icarus franchise like most started with super smash bros brawl, it was cool how they got an obscure character and he had a big role, then eventually I saw that Sakurai is making a new game and it looked really fun, Kid Icarus Uprising, i remember watching videos about the game on the eshop, specifically the multiplayer showdown presentation and thinking that's a really fun looking game, and about 5 days after the game was released I got my hands on it and wow did I fall in love with the gameplay, the music, and most of all the characters, Pit is one of my favorite Nintendo characters and still is to this day even though he hasn't had a new game in over 10 years and the likelihood of a remake or new game is very very low. On top of that I also got the NES Kid Icarus on my 3DS and Myths and Monsters, and I even enjoyed the first Kid Icarus, hard difficulty and all, and whenever I see someone make a video about Uprising on the Original I will always be happy knowing someone else is discovering this underrated franchise
That's awesome! I know a lot of people were introduced to Pit and the Kid Icarus series with Brawl. I was very happy to see the franchise finally get some love after so long. Kid Icarus was the second NES game I ever played back in 1987 and I instantly became a huge fan! The two decade drought from 1992 to 2012 without a single new entry in the series for nearly four console generations was really depressing. Found your channel through the Star Fox documentary and I’m disappointed this didn’t get recommended to me until Sakurai’s video on Uprising had me going on a Kid Icarus binge. Very high quality video. Really hoping all of Sakurai’s sudden mentions of how cool an Uprising remaster would be allows the series to grow wings once again. @@trapez77 Yeah, I get what you're saying. I struggled a bit trying to play SMG that way too and eventually just ended up using the classic controller instead. Either way, I still think Uprising deserves a second chance in some form. 👍
Top notch production, a joy to watch and listen, and spot on and so interesting to me explanations about the Japanese names. Congratulations for an awesome piece of work!
I just got around to finishing this retrospective! Fantastic job Rewind Arcade and MrMatthews with this beast of a project! Ya'll make me want to go back and play these games again 🙏🙏
The first video I see from this channel and the one that assures a sub of mine to you guys: Kid icarus uprising is probably one of my favorite pieces of media to this day, not to mention my favorite videogame ever. And you guys made an amazing work on this. Keep up with the great work!!!

I was also a big KI fan as a kid. Uprising looks interesting, but tbh it's not what I've been waiting for; I wish they did another game in the style of the first one

That honestly makes a lot of sense! I've never played the game, but the art direction and setting definitely feel like they would suit the Kid Icarus series really well.
I always look forward to seeing the retrospectives! I hope you can get to doing series such as Pac-Man World, Tak and the Power of Juju, F-Zero, and Wario Ware soon.
Thank you, glad you enjoy them! I’m taking a short break from longer documentaries, but F-Zero is definitely a series I’d like to cover in the future. 👍
Commenting for the algorithm gods That was a heck of a documentary on one of my favorite Nintendo Series, Informative, Well edited and well paced, Well done! (Also nice to see a chad of Myths and Monsters Enjoyer, I love uprising too even with hand cramps, but that game seriously is mad underrated, Give it a shot if you bounced off of the OG)
Thank you, really appreciate the kind words and support!! I really enjoyed Of Myths and Monsters, even though it was far easier than first game. The quality of life changes were very welcome and the controls felt a bit tighter. I'm really hoping they add it to Switch Online so that more people have a chance to play it. Thanks again for watching!
The amount of information and the great presentation, it’s incredible on this channel. Keep going! P.S. I love to see a video like this on Mach Rider and Ice Climber. I know that are games with just one and two games released respectively, but a man can dream.
Thanks a ton, appreciate the kind words! I'd really like to cover more of Nintendo's earlier games in the future like the ones you mentioned. My only concern is how much information there is about their development. Thanks again for watching!
Factor 5 was also in a financial crisis at the time due to the catastrophic failure of Lair. Because of that, their Kid Icarus and Turrican reboots along with their open world Superman game were cancelled and the company shut down in 2009.
Yeah, Lair really put a big hurting on Factor 5's financial situation sadly. It's one of those things where I'd love to see an alternate timeline where Lair reviewed well and was a big success since I'd love to know what the studio would have made years later, especially since they had so much talent.
@@RewindArcade I'm having mix opinions about the SFX it gives the video personality and stuff but sometimes it's kinda annoying I'm not saying the video is bad or anything I really like it
All good, I know not everyone is crazy about the sound effects, haha. The main reason I use them is to give the animations more weight and life, but I get why some people don’t like them. 👍
@@RewindArcade I was actually caught of guard by how the editing was different then the star fox video then I saw your comment about getting helped with the editing and it made sense but still a great video
I was never really exposed to this series until Brawl came out, but man Uprising was such an amazing game. I spent hours playing that game with my best friend.
@@Retrofire-47 Well the good news is that it gets easier and easier as you progress. The first few stages are by far the toughest. The Game Boy game is also much more forgiving if you have access to it.

Thank you, really appreciate it! I recommend checking out MrMatthews on UA-cam as well since he helped out with a lot of the editing and animations on this.
The Game Boy game is so much more forgiving than the NES one. Also still hoping Uprising gets a Switch port so I have an excuse to play through it again!

Thanks a ton, glad you enjoyed it and really appreciate the kind words! I get a lot of comments about people not liking the sound effects so it’s nice to finally get one that appreciating them. Thanks again!
Man, I love Kid Icarus! I played it shortly after Metroid in '88. Boy, was it tough back then. Still is at the beginning of the game. I have a lot of nostalgia for it. Like drawing maps of the three dungeons. I didn't even know about the GameBoy game until I came across it at a game store eight years ago. I think it was less than $10. I played through and finished it. I liked it, but haven't played it since. I need to dust it off. I don't own a 3DS, so I've never played Uprising. All I really know about it is from what I've heard Dongled bitch about. The controls. 😂 Another criminally neglected franchise by Nintendo. And it's a damn shame. I remember getting hyped for Super Kid Icarus on SNES... and it never happened!! Something on the Switch would be sweet. But I'm not holding my breath. Excellent video as always, dude! I learned a lot of new stuff. I recommend checking out GTV's Kid Icarus video from years ago if you haven't already. He also has a video covering the manga. Anyway, I really enjoyed this. Looking forward to learning about the next franchise you dive into.
Ayyy, really appreciate it Wes!! That's awesome you played it right around the same time I did. So much nostalgia for the game, and just like you I was immensely disappointed when a Super NES entry never released. I honestly only played the Game Boy game for the first time when putting together video. I really liked it, but it was WAY easier than the NES original and I ended up beating it in one sitting, barely breaking a sweat. As for Uprising, I had the same complaints as most which were the controls, haha. I ended up using an emulator to capture footage for this and was able to map everything to a twin-stick layout which made it FAR more enjoyable. Makes me hope a Switch port is in the works even more! Not sure if you've watched any of MrMatthews' videos who collabed on this project with me, but I think you'd probably dig his stuff. Especially his NES Hard series. Anyways, it's always awesome to hear from you dude! Thanks for watching and hope you're doing well.
Greetings, good documentary about Kid Icarus and I have some curiosities that do not appear in the video and that may surprise everyone, my comment will be a bit long but it will be worth giving that information and complementing it with this documentary: -The date of the first game was not exactly December 19th, originally its date was December 15th and that can be seen in the official game posters and game magazines of the time. -The original game had almost no censorship, I mention it because the crosses on the tombs of the overworld and especially the Syrens and the venus sculptures at the end of the game were not censored by Nintendo of America, the only censorship was the Water of Life that In the original Japanese version it was the wine, that's right, Pit drank wine in the first 2 games. (As additional information, in Kaeru no Tame Ni Kane Wa Naru, a game made by the same developers as Kid Icarus, the main character, the Prince of Sable, like Pit, also drinks wine to recover life) -There are details of the Eggplant Wizard and Specknose, the rod that the Eggplant Wizard holds and his creation is a reference to the bonus that the developers received in the winter bonus season during the development of Kid Icarus and regarding Specknose in addition to based on Hirokazu Tanaka is also based on party supplies called "nose glasses" or known as Groucho Marx glasses. -Dark Pit is not the only clone that Pit had, in Of Myths and Monsters there is a group of characters called Putt and their description is as follows: ''Looks like an Amazing Pit (Amazing Pit is Pit with the three sacred treasures equipped, that is, Putt's appearance takes from the three sacred treasures) and attacks in groups''. -in the unused graphics of Of Myths and Monsters, there is a lion and a goat that were not used in the final game, and even though the game didn't make it to Japan there is a set of characters written in partial katakana: ウエオカキワクコサシス セ That's all, greetings from Captain Hanafuda🎴👺♠
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the extra facts! We talk a little bit about the censorship stuff in the add-on Kid Icarus video released alongside the documentary which was very bizarre for the time, but either Nintendo of America was still working out their censorship policies or the Western port was simply rushed to market. It's also sad how little information there is about the Game Boy entry. Really hoping more information surfaces about it's development at some point.
I'm just glad Factor 5's revival of Kid Icarus was canceled. They initially decided that it would be a God of War-esque game with an older Pit taking revenge against Palutena for banishing him, with heavy emphasis on action. If the game released, it would've become the franchise and Nintendo equivalent to DmC Devil May Cry in terms of reputation and controversy. I couldn't thank Sakurai-san enough for giving Uprising it's charm as a zany yet intimidating work and one of my favorite 3DS games of all time next to Fire Emblem Awakening and Animal Crossing New Leaf, among others. Hades will always be renowned as one of the funniest Nintendo villains(next to Bowser in Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, Fawful in the thirdly mentioned, Ghirahim in Zelda Skyward Sword, King K. Rool in the Donkey Kong series, et cetera), as well as one of my favorite demons in video games such as Dante from the Devil May Cry series(no pun intended), Morrigan, her alter ego Lilith, and Jedah from Darkstalkers, Dracula, Soma Cruz, and Alucard from Castlevania, Demi-Fiend and Nahobino from Shin Megami Tensei, and Dark Gaia from Sonic Unleashed.
Yeah, I’m very happy that they didn’t take Kid Icarus in Factor 5’s direction and ended up doing Uprising instead. It has some of the best and funniest writing I’ve ever seen in a video game. Thanks so much for watching!
Daedalus is like an old fashioned Dr Wily, an ancient inventor who behaved like an ÆON FLUX character. Which carries into his myth... if you fly too close to the sun and claim to be God you will meet disaster. If you go low and cold like a sullen wretch, you will drown. So this Western myth says very blatantly choose a middle path on your escape from a labyrinth of woes! Kid Icarus also happens to evoke on his good days... an Angel fighting demons.
Fantastic! Keep up the excellent work! [Yea I know I'm only 4 minutes in, but I know it's gonna be solid :P] *Edit after actually watching* This is a series I have always wanted to know more about and this is by far the S-Tier of vids for this. So many tidbits. Love it.
@@sinisis_sinisis The original game got a port on the 3ds that fixes the problems of the original. Sadly the non 3ds version didn't age well. So stick with Owlboy.
I always knew Kid Icarus would have a comeback after he was given serious consideration for Smash Bros. melee and appeared as a trophy. I'm not sure if we'll get another kid icarus game for a long time, but if it's half as good as Uprising was, it'll be worth the wait.
Yes! I was so happy to see that and couldn't believe that Nintendo chose Kid Icarus to be featured in the movie. I wanted to include it in the video, but the script and a lot of the editing was already done by that point and I was worried people would be mad about Mario movie spoilers. 😅
Back in the early 2000s I created a Kid Icarus game engine for fun. I messed around with the physics and everything, but I could never get that funky movement aiming just right 🤣 Hope they create another Kid Icarus game 😍😍😍😍😍😍with RPG elements like a Zelda game. That'd be awesome. Thanks so much for this video!
That’s really cool about the Kid Icarus game engine! And yeah, I agree that a more adventure-based Kid Icarus game would be amazing. Fingers crossed we get something new at some point. Thanks so much for watching!
Hey I love your retro spectives I was wondering if you would be interested in doing one for r.type ? It’s a Shmup it would mean the world as your previous gradius one was awsome
Thanks, glad you are enjoying them! I had actually considered doing a “History of R-Type” documentary right after Gradius, but I found that Shmup Junkie had already did an excellent one on his channel so there was really no need. Highly recommend check his R-Type documentary out. 👍
I'm still waiting for a proper Kid Icarus 3. A platformer that evolves from the gameplay of the originals. I've only been waiting for about oh, 33 years now... Good God I'm old
I wonder if Nintendo minds if we make a Kid Icarus fan game? They probably would, but since they never DMCA the Mother 3 translation patch, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind a fan game of Kid Icarus
Interesting video about a game that i haven't really played that much. I desperately wanted to play the 3ds game but i found the controls totally unusable. Though to be fair i do struggle with playing the 3ds because of the positioning of the controls.
Thank you! Yeah, I had the same issue with the 3DS game when it first came out. I actually went through Uprising for this video using an emulator with the controls mapped to twin analog sticks which made it soooo much better to play. The 3DS in general always cramps my hands to play so I’m always really happy when they port its games to other platforms.
I actually split the video editing workload on this one with a friend on UA-cam, MrMatthews, who does amazing work, so we were able to go pretty crazy on some of the animations, haha.
I recently had a theory about the original ending in the first game where Pit becomes an “adult” and a budding romance develops with Palutena. The scoring system determines the ending which focuses on Pits experience and inner growth through his battles, but in my theory, I noticed that none of the other “centurions” you rescue are any bigger that pit himself, implying that all angels in this universe are but children who do not possess the ability to age and grow as humans do, thus, despite their bravery, valor and experiences in many battles, these soldiers also remain but children. Pit’s struggle to accomplish feats that no other centurion was capable of separated him from these brave warriors and in the end, his efforts gave way to a new path. You see, pit doesnt grow up to become a man if you get the best ending; he ascends to godhood, thus, winning the heart of the goddess Palutena, sadly, and ending that was never futher emphasized on in future games where he retains his “child” state.
I'm not the biggest knowledgeable guy about Kid Icarus, and still you made me want to try it (Switch Online) and I really liked it. So thanks a lot. PS: maybe it's too late ahah, but a video about the Pikmin series would be nice before the release of Pikmin 4. However maybe you will prefer to play Pikmin 4 before doing this video. 😅😁
That's awesome, glad you tried it out and enjoyed it! It's a pretty fun game and really deserves more attention. Pikmin seems to have a very interesting story and would be a lot of fun to cover, but my plan moving forward is to take a break from longform history videos for a while. Definitely an idea to put on the backburner potentially for later though. Thanks a ton!
My older sister had the NES and a few games and I would play them. She had Kid Icarus but never played it so one time I played it and had fun and it would be the one I would try to beat
I remember borrowing it from my brother when he had it for the game boy (we both got our own game boy and a game, mine was balloon kid and I hated it 😅) and I never got far 😭 it was so hard!
Yup, unfortunately I had finished the script and had begun editing this video before the movie released. It was still awesome to see it be referenced though!
No no no Metroid was finishing up and the team was looking forward to holiday. But they decided to help toru osawa finish up kid Icarus. Right before Xmas Hiroshi yaumachi said it's bug free then it's done. So basically osawa got the dream team to help him out. I own a prototype in my collection it's one of my holy grails. the only problem is that to play it I need the intelligent systems programmer to play the game. I got a hold of one at a private auction and there is several differences between proto and finished version. I don't usually post my collection because it's more fun hearing oh this is one of a kind or there's only so many nwc90 carts out there. Someday I'll piss a lot of collector know it all off when I show them why their rare games now have lower values.
Honestly, the original Kid Icarus is one of those strange games where it starts out very difficult, but gets easier as you progress, since you're gaining levels and power ups. Definitely worth another shot, but it's certainly not for everyone.
Thanks for the correction, I’ve had a few others let me know too, haha. I had it correct in the script originally, but at some point the words got flipped around. 😅

The first video I see from this channel and the one that assures a sub of mine to you guys: Kid icarus uprising is probably one of my favorite pieces of media to this day, not to mention my favorite videogame ever. And you guys made an amazing work on this. Keep up with the great work!!!

Immortals Phoenix Rising on PS5 is what Kid Icarus always looked like in my head.
The Wario series would be a fun one!
Shame the disc system never made it to the states. Would have saved lots of carts getting blown on.
Haha, I think by the time they were considering bringing it to the West it was already starting to struggle in Japan.

That was a heck of a documentary on one of my favorite Nintendo Series, Informative, Well edited and well paced, Well done!

Bro made a high quality video and didn’t think we would notice smh
Man, I love Kid Icarus! I played it shortly after Metroid in '88. Boy, was it tough back then. Still is at the beginning of the game. I have a lot of nostalgia for it. Like drawing maps of the three dungeons.
I didn't even know about the GameBoy game until I came across it at a game store eight years ago. I think it was less than $10. I played through and finished it. I liked it, but haven't played it since. I need to dust it off.
I don't own a 3DS, so I've never played Uprising. All I really know about it is from what I've heard Dongled bitch about. The controls. 😂
Another criminally neglected franchise by Nintendo.
Fantastic video!

Greetings, good documentary about Kid Icarus and I have some curiosities that do not appear in the video and that may surprise everyone, my comment will be a bit long but it will be worth giving that information and complementing it with this documentary:
-The date of the first game was not exactly December 19th, originally its date was December 15th and that can be seen in the official game posters and game magazines of the time.
(As additional information, in Kaeru no Tame Ni Kane Wa Naru, a game made by the same developers as Kid Icarus, the main character, the Prince of Sable, like Pit, also drinks wine to recover life)
-There are details of the Eggplant Wizard and Specknose, the rod that the Eggplant Wizard holds and his creation is a reference to the bonus that the developers received in the winter bonus season during the development of Kid Icarus and regarding Specknose in addition to based on Hirokazu Tanaka is also based on party supplies called "nose glasses" or known as Groucho Marx glasses.
-in the unused graphics of Of Myths and Monsters, there is a lion and a goat that were not used in the final game, and even though the game didn't make it to Japan there is a set of characters written in partial katakana: ウエオカキワクコサシス セ
That's all, greetings from Captain Hanafuda🎴👺♠
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the extra facts!
We talk a little bit about the censorship stuff in the add-on Kid Icarus video released alongside the documentary which was very bizarre for the time, but either Nintendo of America was still working out their censorship policies or the Western port was simply rushed to market. It's also sad how little information there is about the Game Boy entry. Really hoping more information surfaces about it's development at some point.
GAWD, how really, Really, REEEEALY want a "Kid Icarus: Uprising" HD Remaster on the Switch. 👼🏻🛐 🖥🕹
Fingers crossed it happens one of these days! 🤞
BIG agree on this one 👍👍👍
Intresting showing the black market who can’t be haggled
Yeah, I realized that after publishing the video. I think the idea still gets across alright though. 😅
I KNEW KID ICARUS WAS CONNECTED TO METROID
The editing of the video are really well done.
Thank you! It was really fun to put together, but also quite a bit of work.
Pretty much, haha!
Very nice!
Thank you!
Fantastic! Keep up the excellent work! [Yea I know I'm only 4 minutes in, but I know it's gonna be solid :P]

The super Mario movie! Mario was playing kid Icarus in his room! I think there will be a new game soon
I messed around with the physics and everything, but I could never get that funky movement aiming just right 🤣
Hope they create another Kid Icarus game 😍😍😍😍😍😍with RPG elements like a Zelda game. That'd be awesome. Thanks so much for this video!
That’s really cool about the Kid Icarus game engine! And yeah, I agree that a more adventure-based Kid Icarus game would be amazing. Fingers crossed we get something new at some point.

Good God I'm old
Something tells me we're going to be waiting at least another 33 more years before we see that. 😅
I wonder if Nintendo minds if we make a Kid Icarus fan game? They probably would, but since they never DMCA the Mother 3 translation patch, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind a fan game of Kid Icarus
There’s a fan game mentioned in this video and that never got shut down (nor was it ever finished) so it’s possible it would be okay.
@@RewindArcade thanks for the emulator heads up!
That "mature" look for pit looked so bad lol I would've pulled the plug too.

Very cool theory! I definitely could see that being the idea behind the ending. Would love to hear Ozawa talk more about the ideas behind the game.
Indeed. I imagine if they ever make another Kid Icarus, it would be a much darker tone (similar to metroid) and Nintendo’s answer to God Of War…

The NES game was in the super Mario bros movie
Yup, unfortunately I had finished the script and had begun editing this video before the movie released. It was still awesome to see it be referenced though!
日本の方ですが、kid icarus myths and monstersが日本で発売されなかったのは、ピットがエンディングで、翼が焼かれる事が原因なんでしょうか?
The only thing I don't understand is why you don't have 10x-100x more subs.
Thanks, haha! I don’t think UA-cam likes my channel very much. 😅
This game is too hard
Honestly, the original Kid Icarus is one of those strange games where it starts out very difficult, but gets easier as you progress, since you're gaining levels and power ups. Definitely worth another shot, but it's certainly not for everyone.
