    Karen Savage's voice reminds me so much of Megan Follows, who in my mind is the only Anne. Karen does such a marvelous job reading. I've never enjoyed audio books more. Thanks so much.

    I must say, Gilbert Blythe is one of the best male characters in a novel, good person, kind, consistent, hard working and with a sense of humour. At times I felt Anne did not deserve him! Lucy Maud Montgomery certainly rose the standards!

    Karen Savage, you are brilliant how smoothly you change your voice to suit the character who is speaking. The listener feels to be actually hearing the different characters speaking in their own personalities. This is dramatic reading at its finest.

    I loved Anne in my youth but I could never get through the rest of the books beyond Anne of Green Gables. I couldn't understand why I just didn't read them! Now I know. It is because I had to wait to enjoy having them read to me by Karen Savage. She is as quintessentially Anne as Megan Follows, herself! I hope she has read every Anne book for librivox!

    It is always super annoying how blind Anne is to her feelings for Gilbert. Yet, that's what makes her human. We've all got to fudge something at least once in our lives. Phil's speech about how Anne doesn't know love when she sees it is 100% accurate. The whole situation shows how young and immature Anne is as a person. She's not irresponsible or anything, yet she still holds on to those same childish ideals that Dianna grew out of when she fell in love with Fred. The empty relationship with Carter and the near loss of Gilbert bring her arch full circle.

      @@nozecone"hick" usually means someone who is more in the lower working class, with crude language and not very literate. I don't think that is a good description of Gilbert. Maybe we're thinking of hick with different definitions

    • @nozecone
      @nozecone 5 місяців тому

      Gilbert was of a farming community in a somewhat isolated, insular locale. While he would have been of the landed rather than landless class, i.e., the rural middle class, he would have had habits of speech, dress, and behaviour that would have undoubtedly identified him as a 'hick' to uncharitable urban sophisticates. 'Hick' is a classist term I would not normally utter, but since you introduced it, yes, those who use such terms might very well apply the term 'hick' to a real-life Gilbert - before he went away to college and got polished up. I will add that my mother's people were part of L.M. Montgomery's social milieu - in fact, she borrowed the name of a relative for one of her characters - so I have some idea whereof I speak.@@mecheyne

    I don’t get how Anne could hate Ruby so much and not that kid Davy. But to me, this book was so much better than Anne of Avonlea! Gilbert and Anne yay! And I miss Diana, this new school bff is okay but for her to judge Anne like that was soooo uncalled for and honestly shows that Anne shouldn’t trust her. A snake in the grass to me. I wish Murilla was more vocal in guiding Anne to follow her heart and dreams. Anne even said she lost some romance for the world but I feel like Gilbert can bring that back to her.

    Why does chapter 20 sound so muddy? I could barely hear a word of it, and finally gave up listening to it, skipping ahead to 21. Too bad it was unclear as to why Anne refused Gilbert...guess I'll go back to my book for that particular chapter.

      Maybe your speakers aren't great? I'm listening to it with my cheap ear buds and it's fine. Librivox recordings aren't usually high end but I think Karen's reading is soooo brilliant for chapter 20

    • @rachelwickart275
      @rachelwickart275 5 місяців тому

      @@mecheyne I wish it were the speakers. I'd change them in a second, but chapters 19 and 21 sound just fine. Only chapter 20 is muddy...overlaid with crackle and hiss, as if Karen was reading in a huge tin can with the lid on and a hailstorm going on. I, too, LOVE her readings, which is why I'm willing to continue listening to the other chapters.
      I'd try my earbuds if I had a place to plug them in on my desktop!
