"1776 is a 1972 American musical film directed by Peter H. Hunt. The screenplay by Peter Stone was adapted from his libretto for the 1969 stage musical of the same name. Portions of the dialogue and some of the song lyrics were taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants of the Second Continental Congress. The song score was composed by Sherman Edwards."
In this song, William Daniels as John Adams.
“One useless man is called a disgrace, two a law firm, and that three or more is called a congress.” Nice to know 243 years later some things never change.

FYI, a few years ago, B.C. (Before Covid), one of the FNC “Legends & Lies” series played, focusing on the Founding Fathers. Each episode focused on a particular Founding Father. And the actors appeared in other episodes in the role of their Founding Father.
I really liked the actor who played John Adams. Later, I found out this actor had great esteem for John Adams and had played him in maybe four different productions. I read a short piece he wrote about his experience on the FNC series, as well as in “1776,” in which he played… John Adams! So he had to have been a great singer as well. If I recall, he said that at the FNC audition, they were pretty much considering any of the actors for any of the Founding Father roles. During his audition, they wanted him to read some lines, which he did. On the spur of the moment, he asked if he could present one of John Adams speeches. He recited it passionately and from memory-and got the role of John Adams on the spot.

I love John Adams little power move at the end. He knows he cannot win but he refuses to give into their demand. He walks out while screaming rather than shut up and sit down.
Thank you John Adams for never shutting up!

Underrated musical. I am young, but cultured and thank God for that. All you Hamilton lovers, do yourself a favor and watch this all the way through. It is one of the best musicals out there and it is worth your time!
I don’t see why you call yourself cultured, or call out Hamilton. Seems a bit pretionous.
I did watch it all the way through and I don't like it. I'm sorry but was that supposed to be a insult to Hamilton lovers. I mean the reason why it's underrated is cause it's not up to some people's standards. for me the musical is *ok* but Hamilton to me is better. Don't be rude and say stuff like that some people like something and the others like something else.
@@jaydenps2759 You mentioned standards. You should take into account when it was made. Tastes change through time. 1776 won a Tony for best musical in 1969 so it was up to the standards of that time. The reason the film was not successful was the turbulent anti-war sentiment in 1972. The country was divided. People didn't feel celebrating America.

@ What do they call Jr High now?
@@colleen4ever Many are called 'Middle School' now, though I suppose some might still be called Jr. High. The one I attended in the late 70's was just called Seekonk Jr. High, but several years latter they renamed it the 'Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School' after the principal who died of cancer. Back when I was there he was my English teacher and I had him for home room.
I taught high school history and used this several times. I'll never forget the time one of my students was trying to answer a test question on the Triangle Trade and was quietly singing "Molasses to Rum" to himself to remember details.
When I was a kid I desperately wanted to play Adams in a stage production. Then I ended up being the height of George Washington.
I still wish I could play him sometimes.

WILL SOMEONE SHUT THAT MAN UP!... NEVER!!!... NEVER!!!...
I just realized that Boy Meets World made reference to this movie by naming the high school John Adams high school. (Which William Daniels who plays John Adams plays Mr. Feeny on Boy Meets World.)
The "hot as hell in Philadelphia" line made it into a Saint Elsewhere episode.
Yes sir! William Daniels sang it to his wife while they were vacationing in Philadelphia. Just the line, not the whole song. 😁
I was in my terrible 2s in the Bicentennial Year. I've been told by my parents that they and my 2 older brothers would burst into "Sit Down John" every time I threw a tantrum.

Interesting fact, for context on this scene: the whole window thing is that whenever the Congress was debating, the windows were boarded up and nail shut so outsiders couldn't eavesdrop. The same happened at the constitutional convention over a decade later in the same location.

Any musical that celebrates and informs about our founding is alright by me. I love this play and film. It was produced using the music of the day, just as Hamilton was. They were generated to reach the audiences of the day. No need to make sweeping statements about which is better musically, that's completely subjective. Though you could gripe about accuracy.
come on, you really think the audience of the day preferred opera esque musicals? Don't be dense. 1776 reflected what wealthy show watchers wanted and were designed with that audience in mind. Hamilton on the other hand was designed for a more wide reaching audience. Ironically enough the very urban population that Hamilton targets can't afford to see Hamilton.
