The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Fun fact: William Daniels was nominated for a Tony for this show, but declined the nomination because it was for Best Supporting Actor, and (as anyone who has seen the show can tell you), John Adams is the star.
Did the Tony’s even saw the show!
One of many absolutely ridiculous rulings by the Tony Awards committee, and a principled act by Daniels, who might have had an easy win competing in a starring role against people who had only played supporting roles. Fellow *1776* cast member Ron Holgate (Richard Henry Lee) won instead.
thats the most john adams thing ever
So who the hell did they think was the Best Actor?! George Washington? Who literally mailed in his performance?!
Any performer billed below the title of the show in the opening night Playbill is eligible for Featured Actor or Actress. Because every performer in 1776 was listed below the title, including William Daniels, those are the categories they were eligible in. The producers of the show could have submitted a petition for Daniels to be eligible instead as Leading Actor, but they didn’t.
William Daniels played John Adams
In Boy Meets World, he is the principal of John Adams High in Philadelphia
Was this intentional??
And he sang “It’s hot as Hell in Philadelphia.” when playing Dr. Mark Craig, on St. Elsewhere.
Not a coincidence in the set.
I saw the original cast on Broadway in 1969 on a school trip and in 1972 our teacher took us to see the premier of the film at Radio City Music Hall. Wonderful memories! 😁👍🇺🇸
You are so lucky, my friend.
My mom took me to the broadway show when i was 12 years old. It was fantastic.
I would love to back in time and see the original show live. Unfortunately I was born a few years too late. :(
As if William Daniels wasn't already cool enough as KITT, Mr Feeny, and the dad in The Graduate, I now see he did a Revolutionary War musical? He truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
Watch the movie version from 1972. He is astoundingly good.
Dad in the Graduate was Murray Hamilton
@@michaelcap9550 Murray Hamilton played Mr Robinson.
St. Elsewhere!!!
If I ever get my hands on a Time Machine, I’m going back to see this live. I wouldn’t be born for another 8 years.
I absolutely LOVE this musical. Yes for years, I thought Adams was singing "Voteiess" and had to see if the word was actually real. Seeing this performance on the Ed Sullivan show is a treat.
You tell 'em Mr Feeney ! 😊
I love that show!! Never saw the play but I love the movie.
SAME!!
At the 1:00 mark we can see John Cullum as Edward Rutledge just behind William Daniels.
It's a cast FILLED with favorites...Ken Howard, Emory Bass, Billy Duell, David Ford, Ronald Holgate...never mind Virginia Vestoff and Betty Buckley...
Later in this clip, he performed Molasses to Rum, and did he knock it out of the park.
@@ElleCee62978 Beautiful man & OH THAT VOICE. Was lucky enough to see original Broadway play (think I as in 6th grade, fall of '70.)
@@valkillion6869 I’m so jealous. I’m a William Daniels fan because of this movie. Ralston Hill, John Cullum, and Ronald Holgate are also favorites.
@@ElleCee62978 moreso even than in the film IMHO. Cullum starred in like 5 shows on Broadway and I wish I could've seen 1 of them live.
Absolutely love this musical🥰🥰
The first Broadway show I ever saw: I was a high school junior, and fell in love with live theater. ❤
Oh wow! I saw the movie a few years later and a buddy of mine and I got the book of the play from the library and read a lot of it aloud but I didn't know this existed!
I learn something new every day
Never saw this musical! I do remember the fervor of the bicentennial when 1976 rolled around. 🎉💥 Great performance here!💜
It's an Essential. Watch it. 😊
Watch the movie.
Prime time network television, back then..
My favorite show
From playing a Founding Father to playing a high school teacher! Go Fee-hee-hee-eeeeenay!❤
He's why it was "John Adams" High School.
@@pendorran He was even in THE GRADUATE with Dustin Hoffman and Ann Bancroft. He's been in the entertainment industry as long as my parents have been alive!❤
Thanks for showing me a “Blast from the Past”…😊! I can see why William Daniels was able to play such an effective “Dr. Craig “ on the tv show “St. Elsewhere “…good memories!
Have a great day!
The film Director Peter Hunt probably had it easy as 95% of the film cast had already done the show hundreds of times. But then again, HE directed this...the stage production as well 😀. Probably got filmed in 2 weeks.
The movie though is one of the best historical movies of all time. It is a musical and somewhat of a comedy, but it really tells the story of America so well. William Daniels is John Adams. Ken Howard is Thomas Jefferson.
What makes it great is that this is how we like to think it happened without the music obviously
Feeneh Feeheeheeneh Feeeneee iykyk 😂
I didn’t know William Daniels appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show? 1776 became a movie in 1972 and ten years later he played cardiologist Dr. Mark Craig on the Emmy Awards winning St. Elsewhere and from 1993-2000 as Mr. George Feeney on Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World😀👍🏿🎉🎆🎊⛑️
Hey, why is William Duell singing “No” to “Vote Yes”? He was playing the Congressional Custodian- he didn’t have a vote!
William Daniels, as in St. Elsewhere, Knight Rider, and Boy/Girl Meets World?
yeah that's him.
@@1talldaddy I thought it was, he just looks so young there.
This musical seems to have been the “Hamilton” of its time.
In the movie, Franklin is not present in this scene, I thought the same was true of the show, but since he is here, maybe not .
Actor here not the Franklin actor in the film, btw
Man, John Adams gets bullied in 2 musicals now
