  • One of the most frequently asked question I get is "how to mix drums for metal" or "how to get a metal preset" in Superior Drummer 3. In this video, I show you how to get a good starting point for metal orientated drum sounds using the internal tools of Superior Drummer 3 and some basic processing. Hope that helps!

    Great tutorial Mike, very usefull for me. I did knew about the stock presets you added. So thanks for that. I'm lately mostly mixing the drums in Reaper using raw drumsamples. Maybe I will try this approach on my new cover. Thanks for sharing.

    Metal!! I tried to download SSD5 but it wouldn't run on my 32 bit system. Sure this will help out quite a bit of people!!

    Hey Mike, First up thanks for your in depth explanation on e-drums and Superior Drummer 3 in particular! I find it to be really helpful. I just purchased SD3 last week, which is connected to my TD-50. It drastically improved my e-drumming experience for sure.
    While I have so much questions, I just wanted to ask if you do have any video explaining how to get different nuances from the multi-zone PD-140S. I find it to be a little bit static now.
    Greetings from The Netherlands.

      Hello, thanks for watching! I have a video where I showcase the different zones in SD3. Maybe that helps. It’s actually doable to create a more smooth transition between the different zones and articulations.

    Great video Mike! What about Toms? I was waiting for You to chose some Big Toms from SD3 preset and wondering how big they are and how would add them to the mix, so a #continuation of this video with some heavy toms would be nice!

      I get a lot of questions about processing toms, so I think I‘m gonna do a video about it. Thanks for the input, appreciate that!

    You can just choose the Iowa preset based on the same kit from the Core Library thats got basically the same stacks and is overall great except for the toms which are a bit too dry.

    Who the hell wants a metal kick anyway? HAHA. Just joking. But in all actuality, I have always disliked metal kicks because IMO, they are extremely way too clicky for me and not enough body. But I guess the metal drummers need to emphasize the double bass drum technique they do. Very nicely done my friend. Great that youre helping people. Youre the man Mike!

      You need a clicky sound or else it would become too muddy the faster th go

    Thanks for this. Do you know if the stacked sounds also randomize? And do you always stack for kick and snare for metal? is this industry standard to stack like this? Or is this just an alternative to EQ-ing and processing the separate mics individually?

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  Рік тому +1

      Hi, thanks for watching.
      The stacked sound randomize as long as you use instruments from within SD3.
      Well, stacking is one way to approach it. It’s quite common, not only for metal (Jazz probably doesn’t need it). I think it’s a better way to create some energy or to shape a tone in order to cut through the mix without overprocessing one instrument too much which often looses its character then.
      In the end it’s always about how it works in a song and in a mix. Context is everything.

    Is there a difference between a clean kit or a default kick, I thought they bouth were unprocessed? I mostly choose a clean kit or is that not right?

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  5 років тому +1

      No, the default kit is the same. Maybe I used the wrong term. When you pick the default kit, it’s always the Gretsch kit.

      Just add another instrument (the box in the top left corner).
