Coincidentally, just yesterday, I thought I was going to have to do this to a valve as I was replacing a double spout faucet with a single spout faucet in my kitchen that I detected the hot water valve slightly oozedripping after being completely tightened shut off AND even after the home's main water line shut off. Made me concerned, initially but, fortunately, it ended up a fake alarm benign issue with out any drip whatsoever after valve faucet was installed, all valves were opened and especially after tightening that specific little nut you mentioned connected to valve handle to back out and apply the rope. Checked the kitchen under sink floor board numerous times after faucet turned on and off throughout the day and not a single spot of water condensation or any moisture ANYWHERE.

Worked like a charm! Thank you!! ...and for all you knuckleheads that say it's only $10 for a whole new valve...you have completely remove and re-solder the fitting... not always possible, or necessary. This was a very easy fix for only a few bucks.

If the pipe extends from the wall enough, it would be easier to cut the valve off and replace it with a valve that has a compression fitting.
may as well replace the whole valve!

I was surprised when he didnt just tighten the packing that was there, or even mention it's probably the easiest/ most common method given his shit might be too old. Given the space between the two nuts, I'm pretty sure there was enough packing already to just put some extra pressure on the nut for it to work. Good tutorial if that's not the case regardless

our house is aroud 60 years old. I am going to go to the hardware store, get some 3/32 Teflon rope and see if I can fix the leak. by the way, Great video!

Whenever I do any type of plumbing repair I dry it off good and then wrap the joint with toilet paper. That way I can check it days later to be sure it's not leaking.

Would there be packing rope in there already? How do you get that stuff out? Where do I shut off my main water? Is it where the water heater is (two giant handle valves)? Do I need to turn off the water heater to do this? Thanks!
I had a "professional plumber" install a kitchen sink and faucet a month ago. He failed to tell me about the shutoff valve leak. Nice guy. So, I'm now reluctant to call any plumber and pay the big bucks for what looks like a simple fix.

You can also replace the shut off valve. Yes, DYI save money and get the experience.

Never heard of teflon rope and you know darn well that's where they leak from when they sit unused for years. I tell everyone that when they change their clocks they should change their smoke alarm batteries and also give all their shut off valves a full turn cycle off and then on again to keep them working properly. After years of non use I have broken off handles with Channel locks trying to turn them.

I just finished installing a new vanity, vessel sink and single faucet. Went to turn on the water, then low-and-behold, both valves are leaking. I tried to tighten the nut. Which did not work, especially since I never touched it to begin with. I was just about to go buy a new valve, pipe and soldering, that was until you video magically appeared.
At first I thought you were going to use Teflon tape, as I never heard of Teflon rope.
Now I am going to buy some rope and try to do the Teflon rope remedy.

Hello! Trying to replace a very old leaky valve that's rusted. Since the valve is being taken apart in this fix, could you buy a new valve and then replace only the half that you took off with that portion of the new valve as an easier, slightly more expensive option?

Get a replacement shutoff and install it cost = about $15-18 from Lowes. You can do it and it will be fixed for decades!
i removed the handle of the shutoff valve to replace it, but water startedt coming out from the stem. is that suppose to do that? would removing just the handle makes the valve leak?
No. Maybe the valve was seized and you changing the handle caused some movement of the stem, thus the leakage.
Why would you need to solder to replace it. You could add a compression shut off valve.

Yes
my water valve doesn't have a packing nut but it's still leaking. it's one of those that you turn 90 degrees
Why do all that when you can replace the shutoff for cheap ?

Sure, if you can find the right size and if you can get the handle off. The fastener holdiing a water valve handle can be very difficult if not impossible to remove if it's older due to corrosion which is where teflon rope shines. It's like making your own custom gasket which saves time, money and it WORKS!
Was NOT leaking until i turned it OFF to replace the tank valve, now its leaking ...

Replacing the valve requires soldering. More than 10 bucks in time and equipment, I'd think.
