    I have looked for a butter mold with a clover all my adult life - just like my grandmother's. This was a true joy to watch. We always had white butter from our own cow's milk Thank you.

    Back in the day we had a few Jersey cows on the farm and used to skim the cream off to make ice cream and butter. For butter we would shake the cream in a quart jar till separated then rinsed it in water and added a bit of salt.

      Yes, I know, it can be tricky! I have had the best success by pressing soft butter into the wet mold and then placing it in the fridge or freezer for 30 mins or so. Hope this helps 💛 ~ Anja

    Lovely video. Wish you'd shown yourself putting the butter into the mold! I was amazed to hear you pronounce tangy as if it was from tangerine rather then tang, tan-gee rather than tang-ee. It IS the tang of the sour cream you want, isn't it? Keep churnin'!

    • @OurGabledHome

      For this recipe, I used 2 pints of cream and about 2 TBSP of sour cream. That gives me about 1 pound of butter. You can check out the full blog post here: ourgabledhome.com/how-to-make-butter-the-old-fashioned-way/ 😊~ Anja

    just bought a churning setup for my first batch. what sort of fat content are you looking for when purchasing cream? i'm guessing unpasteurized is number one.

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  2 роки тому

      You can use both pasteurized and unpasteurized cream. I use the latter that I skim off our raw, non-homogenized milk so I am not sure of the fat content but the butter always comes out perfect 🤷‍♀️ ~ Anja

    How do you make butter if you don't have milk with cream in it? I want to buy whole milk from the grocery and make butter due to the high cost of butter but all the recipes call for cream. That's too much.

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  Рік тому

      Most store-bought milk has been homogenized so the cream won't separate. See if you can get un-homogenized whole milk. Otherwise, you can just buy heavy cream ~ Anja

    Please don't use your hands, with jewelry on, to squeeze out the buttermilk. Use a cotton cloth or cheese cloth to wring out the buttermilk. Check out other videos on how it should be done. Some will show you how to form the butter with paddles.

    That's not old fashion butter . That's city butter made with stuff from the store . What you have is the same butter everyone buys at the store made from processed milk . And old fashion butter doesn't need sour cream .

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  2 роки тому +5

      Thank you for your comment, Tim! However, I disagree with you: this video is about a method, not certain ingredients. If you look closely you can see that my cream is organic, from pasture-grazed animals, and has only been pasteurized, not homogenized. Folks can use whatever cream they like, the method doesn't change. Of course, old-fashioned butter does not 'need' sour cream but I have an antique cook book that actually recommends letting cream sour at room temperature before churning ~ Anja

    Hi Anja - I so love your videos !!! Should I be getting "cooking" cream ? or "whipping" cream ? For "salted" butter, how much salt do I add and at what stage ? I can't wait to try this. Many thanks

    • @OurGabledHome
      @OurGabledHome  3 роки тому +5

      I would get heavy whipping cream if you'd like to make butter. For 2 cups of cream, add 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt for a fairly salty butter, or 1/4 teaspoon for lightly salted butter. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your sweet comment 💛 ~ Anja
