- With the SUV market growing ever rapidly and showing no signs of slowing any time soon, we wanted to see how two performance SUVs shaped up, mixing the mighty AMG petrol with the impressive new Audi diesel.
Combining practicality and impressive performance, both the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63S 4MATIC and Audi SQ7 seem very similar on paper, but which would Tiff and Paul prefer?

I have owned an SQ7 now for 6 months and I have to say it's a very easy car to live with. I get upwards of 35mpg on long trips and can hit 40mpg if driving at a steady 70mph. I bought it because I wanted a bit of fun combined with good mpg and being able to fit my 2 dogs in the boot. Ticks all of the above. I could not find a match to those 3 requirements on another SUV and especially at this price point. Great car.

Hey , been thinking about buying a used one and seen some people say that pretty much all the electrical issues and other reliability issues have been resolved , that the Q7 has.
So now 2 years later , how was your experience with it and how much have you drove it (and if still driving it) ?
It also has a middle isofix seat which is a huge bonus for me with a young toddler and older kids. No merc or bmw offers this.

+THE MYTH Fair enough but you're still nitpicking. With turbo-charging and downsizing we're lucky enough that one manufacturer knows to keep the right V8 noise. Audi and BMW V8's sound like vacuum cleaners in comparison.

I actually quite like these Audi SQ7s . I am not into Audis , don't know much about them , but recently discovered these by accident and they're growing on me.
Some of the comments here people are saying you buy a vehicle like this to show off , etc. I DON'T THINK SO. I think the Audi is very understated. Just looks like a big estate car , (which I like) , It'ss not showy / flashy at all.
The only thing I don't like on it is the shifter and that big console between the front seats. I wish they'd put the shifter on the column and left the floor clear in the front.
I am still impressed though . Love the technology in this and would seriously consider one.
You deserve far more subs than 16k. Good video, good production and reviewers have good chemistry. Keep up the good work. God knows my additiction to car videos need more of these.

I have the GLE 63S. It's fabulous and v.v.v.fast. Love it
I have an SQ7 and it is all that is mentioned here and does 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds, but can do 40mpg as well. The Merc can't match that economy.....

As nice and complete as the Audi is (its very good) I will still choose the Mercedes. It looks better, sounds better, has a nicer interior and I just like it more! Excellent video, as always!

I accept your opinion. However, i think there are objective characteristics which clearly speak for the Q7's interior. I will try to explain that standpoint:
GLE is a car introduced in 2015. Nevertheless, it's interior looks very similar to the interior of the c-class (W204) from 2007, except for better material quality, a bigger infotainment screen and some other details. But the basic framework is almost the same. There are several elements, which are simply outdated. For example the number pad in the center console. No one needs that anymore because of smartphone integration. Additionally, modern design implies usage of digitized elements, such as digital dashboards, digital screens and so on. For a car that is so expensive as the GLE, i expect it to have a modern, cleaned up interior, like the one in the current e-class.
The Q7's interior however appears way more modern. It has a very clean design with several digitized elements such as the "virtual cockpit", small digital screens for the climate controls, ambiance lighting and so on.
This is why i think that the Q7 clearly wins in terms of interior. However, mercedes looks better from the outside, has the better engine/performance and the better sound.

Tom Current diesels are really clean due to Ad-Blue. Do some research and use internet to gain some knowledge instead of listening to gossips.
Firstly, I was joking about the VW scandal. Secondly, current diesels are not clean outside the test cycles. Here's a study by TNO from the Netherlands: www.tno.nl/nl/over-tno/nieuws/2016/10/zes-nieuwe-rapporten-over-praktijkemissies-van-wegvoertuigen/ (I think you are Dutch, judging from your name?)
Check the PDF at that page which is the result of the study. Modern diesels are, in practice, Euro6 is only 30% better than Euro1 which is a horrifying result.
If anyone thinks there is such a thing as clean diesel. They are dim. They wont be able to imagine how our sun rotates the milky way on one of its arms.
Yeah, using double the fuel and chucking out way more co2 is really much cleaner!

Everything about the GLE63 is superior. It looks better. It sounds better. It goes better. The interior might be older, but I like its aesthetic better.

A simple stage 1 remap brings the SQ7 up to 520 bhp & 750 lbft.....in a diesel! Absolutely bonkers!
And then you’ll be putting a new gear box in no time

We have a sq7, the performance and the sound you really have to experience in person. We’ve had s3 and still have a ra4 which we don’t drive it that much cos we enjoy the sq7 so much. My wife and I often ask each when was the time we fill up the sq7? Cos it’s so economical compare to our other cars. Full tank of diesel usually last us 2 weeks sometimes more the way we drive.
You have a nice collection. Paul thinks the SQ7 is the best every day car on the market for the money, period. 👍

Dude no way! the Q7 has the most beautiful and modern interior I've seen! Even next to rolls royces which I've been in many times, the rolls obviously has better materials but as for placement and tech wise... Q7 is way better with that

I drive Audi and my misses a Merc. I reckon it’s easier to set the re entry control on a space ship than set the sat nav in a Merc! Tiff, if you don’t do modern tech and can’t even operate the rear wiper on an Audi how on earth do you deal with a Merc! Look at that central touch pad thing half covering a wheel which also depresses as well as moves lift, right, forward and backward. It’s the most complicated interior of any car I’ve ever driven, and that’s a lot by the way!
That said the Merc engine is glorious.
Final question, did I miss the MPG debate?

Yes but I look at it this way. The noise of the amg wins every time. I would happily pay the fuel to hear that noise. Besides if you are in the position to buy one of these, I don’t think you’ll be worrying about fuel consumption

this sound that the Audi made when it was turned off was regeneration, which means that it blows away all the gases that have risen in the exhaust pipes to prevent an explosion.

Great review. I’m not normally an Audi fan but of the two I would go for it simply on looks, the Merc looks lumpy and that C pillar is a carry over from the 1st generation and still does not work.

I like the Audi's interior more, though the Merc's interior will age much better. So which car will I get? Not the Audi. I wonder why Audi won't bring a diesel vehicle to the US... lol
With your gas prices (compared to Europe) you don't need diesels!
Lovecars haha good point, but the range offered by certain diesels here in the US make them very attractive for travel. As a 'basic' car I'd heavily consider a 3 Series Estate with a diesel motor. It'll definitely be a long time before we get any 'sportier' vehicles stateside as a diesel. Even the new Audi SQ5 we get as a gas model.

Don't forget that the Merc's interior is already essentially 7 years old, with an update 2 years ago. The new GLE coming in a year or two will have an interior more akin to the current E- and S-Class.

Sadly today almost every manufactorer ditches classy dials for "virtual cockpit tft things". Have never seen a graphic i liked on them.
Still there is no tuner offering different graphics. The second thing: carbon trimm on cars with weights over 2 tons is ridiculous.

Hi. We get zero support from Mercedes-AMG (and most manufacturers) so have to rely on kind hearted friends to lend us cars for reviews!
The Mercedes looks nicer, sounds better and goes faster, and has a nicer interior design IMO.
The Audi, is cheaper and gives better MPG but also uglier, slower and an tech overload interior. If you can afford either car then who cares about a few extra MPG? I dont see the point of the SQ7, they should have put in the RS6 motor and be done with it.

The US Version of SQ7 has TFSI Petrol engine with 456 hp & ABT Ver has 503 hp
