This. I know so many people who put ALL their experience on their resume or ALL their education. I have seen friends who have doctorate degrees putting all that on an application to McDonalds. There is no law that says you have to put EVERYTHING on there. I fell into that trap where I listed my management positions and had my entire work history on this 4 page super resume. Now I have a single page resume with it tailored to the job posting. Even though I am happily employed now..I constantly apply and get hits with it all the time. Why still apply when I have a job? It keeps that skill sharp.

The legal profession is falling apart. Law schools produce 2 graduates per entry-level job. Incomes for self-employed sole practice lawyers (who are 40 percent of the profession) have declined 35 percent since the 1980's according to the IRS. Paralegals are being replaced with computer software - 1 para can do the work of 10 now. Five law schools have closed in the last 3 years.
I went to law school. Dave Ramsey, a factory job with Overtime, and parents with a spare house is how I repaid 90,000 in debt in 3 years. That lady needs to get out of law. Dave's corporate assistant idea sounds good.

I was thinking about being an attorney at one point. I have the chops for it, but I didn't want to spend the ludicrous amount of money for the degree, with no guarantee of success. I knew that it would be a dumpster fire getting into the business, so I opted to not do it. I'm just happier driving a truck, even though I have a college degree and have actually helped a friend pass the bar exam in two states. (I've also won lawsuits, going pro se and I love negotiation and mediation.)

    • @sbrazenor2

@rocky mountain lass it's a dicey proposition. Giving legal or financial advice without adequate licenses / certifications can lead to legal problems. I do offer tactical guidance, procedural tips, and resource information where I can. Some issues require as little as a notarized affidavit, others require simple contestment and discovery inquiry (i.e. for debt collection, an itemization is required to determine outstanding balance and terms of agreement for delineation of debt responsibility, but most collectors lack that information - which means the default is their claim is invalid.)
I also helped a friend with a recent probate issue, but that only required two forms and a death certificate. (Small estate disbursements in NY are pretty simple if there are no other heirs / claimants.)
I don't need the money, so I wouldn't charge anyone I help. It's more about seeing things done justly.

When someone can refer you or speak up for you as an advocate that you’ll be great at a job, it helps you stand out and makes your chance of getting hired more likely. I love what Dave suggested about connecting with her church family to network.

This is probably the only call I've heard, where I'd actually take the person that called in and help them out until they got working again. I can hear that this woman is at a point of desperation where she'd be back on her feet within 2-3 months in the right part of the country. Sometimes the worst thing a person can do is dig in roots in the wrong place.
I did the opposite. I bought into a neighborhood that was at its worst point, and was about the worst in my city. We had shootings, drug dealers, and section 8 tenants about 7 years ago when I bought in. I knew it would get better than it was, but it would take some time. Now the neighborhood is gentrifying with young families moving in and the houses are being restored left and right. I bought in at $67K on a bank owned foreclosure and the current estimated value is about $182K.
I've also almost tripled my income since moving in here. By being tenacious and making the right risk choices, I've done pretty well. If things start sliding the other way, I'll be gone before the $#!t hits the fan. LOL :)

Yes it’s true lower end jobs such as McDonald’s, Walmart, target, and so on, they are always looking for applicants to have a giant labor pool to choose from. These low end jobs have no reason to put down their help wanted signs when they can keep it up to collect applications, and I think it’s reasonable to have this many applications, because turnover is real concern, and having the next best candidate for the job on the ready is great. So yeah, don’t get the help wanted signs confused if looking for a job.

Cleaning houses 40-60 hrs a week, every week for months maybe years is also not for everyone, you really need to have the physical streangth for that. The best thing might be for her to move.

I'll admit, I've never been as successful to be a paralegal or anything like that. But having been a supervisor at many retail stores and pharmacy chains I can say that.. we were told to hire younger people. Alot of the older people on applications we received were just discarded because we want someone who can work hard and fast and learn things the way that we want them to. Anytime we ever did hire older people they were set in their ways, refused to listen to training.. refused to work hard. So it's just easier for a company to hire a younger person who's willing to listen and be molded. I imagine the market is hard for people at 57 years old who don't already have something established. The best thing I ever saw on applications was a drive to learn and master any skills.

I really identified with this call. When I got out of university, I could not find a job to save my life. I looked just about everywhere, but I ran into the common problem of being too qualified for minimum wage work, but not qualified for anything that paid more. Finding a job can be more tricky than it may seem, and I hope that this caller was able to sort out her situation.

I'm currently between jobs. My parents recently had a conversation with me where they pretty much insinuated that I was laid off because I was a failure. Then again, my father worked the same job from 17-years-old until retirement. But they just are unaware that things have changed since the 60's. Things continue to change. I liked Dave's recommendation to network with others in her field. Hopefully she can find work that pays the bills, if not fulfilling her dreams of doing what she loves.

She can rent out space in her house, despite the problems in her neighborhood. She could nanny/babysit, as families would likely appreciate an older/experienced woman who is also a mother caring for their children. She could be a caregiver and take care of the elderly (with little to no training). If she's willing to go to school for a few weeks, she could become a nursing assistant and work in a nursing home (often, community workforce development agencies will pay for this training; also, some nursing homes will provide this training for free and then hire graduates after completion of the program).

His living situation in VT is beautiful but he is also financially frugal using a wood stove to supplement the heat and he drives a Prius. 1 kid in college and another soon to be there. Thanks Dave! Finally a caller on my level. I'm going to sell my paid for house next door in GA. and move into a van or RV. I have applied for jobs delivering pizza and get interviewed by a 23 yo who tells me "yes" but I never hear from them again. "I need to check your license....." Don't worry it's clean because I used to drive a truck. My house is worth $36K on a good day; we don't have shootings yet but drug addiction and theft is rampant. I can barely walk at age 59 because of all the labor jobs I have had, but at least I have SSDI, for now. I didn't want to retire early and still don't. They say you can work part time but when you do they send you nasty letters. Try to find any job in this "white hot" economy. Ever see those lighted "Lyft or Uber" signs on dashboards at night in Atlanta? A regular taxi will crash into your front wheel or bumper on purpose and leave; your car is disabled and the airbag is blown in your face! I can't wait to move into a van; then I will have to buy drugs in MX just to get a part time job. I have also applied for cleaning jobs but they want a lady to do it. I get it; me too.

I'm an accountant and I'm in similar situation. I don't have enough experience to get hired, but need to get hired to get experience... What have I done so far and am confident would work for her?
    1. Get learning. Nobody's gonna care about anyone, be 20 or 50, if they aren't learning new stuff at home, if they don't stay current.
    2. Get expanding your repertoire. If what you sell about yourself doesn't attract employers, try selling it as an advantage to an employer, who doesn't have the necesity to hire someone full time on it. "So, you're applying with us to be an accountant and you clearly know your legal stuff? that could be helpful to us"
    3. Get networking. While I don't usually aggree with Dave's church recommendations (co's I don't think church could help anyone with most meaningful things), this is an exception. She needs to get in touch directly with small business owners. Not even with HR!
    4. Contact nearby public universities. Atleast in my region, Uni's try to help anyonle who come's, as long as they can.
