My love of gardening has been lifelong. My husband saw the arborvitae’s and he goes. I want a whole row of those to block out the neighbor who curses and carries on a little too much. I said, sure thing buddy he’s on a tight right now I told him we have to wait till spring.😂❤
I've been planning on opening a nursery for a couple years, and in 2025 we're finally going to start building. I appreciate, so much, everything you've shared on this channel. I've been in search of information, tips and tricks, what to do and what not to do for a long time, and I've run into gatekeeper after gatekeeper. Your videos have been immeasurably helpful! Thank you.
@@savvydirtfarmer Yes it will, but the dishpan sure beats 70 individual solo cups I filled and a WHOLE lot easier to move and water when needed. I about lost my mind during the 7 week drought we had. And less holes to make in chosen vessel. Thank you for sharing your journey. You are very generous. I appreciate your efforts. From York County Pennsylvania.
For rooting I use 20 % sand, 60% pine bark mulch. 20 % shredded leaf mold. I find if it was just sand it would have great drainage, but would dry out too quickly in warmer weather.
The Green Giant and Emerald green are such a great seller. We have a lot of other growers here selling them but still sell plenty each year. Pretty much sell all that we grow. Great video showing the whole 1-2 year process! Merry Christmas! Wish you all a prosperous 2025!
Great privacy trees for a distant fenceline. Just know that the 🔥 FIRE DEPARTMENT 🔥 strongly advises people to NOT PLANT these trees/shrubs anywhere near a home, barn, or anything that you don't want burmed up. These plants contain very volitile 🔥 resins and oils. I watched my neighbors green ,tall arbivita tree/shrub catch fire. It went up like a Roman Candle... Like a torch!!! It was obviously burning with much more intensity than the other vegitation in his yard. I proceeded to have the ones that were planted at the corners of my home REMOVED. I work in the nursery industry. I always inform folks of this concern. FYI
Great video Craig! I am glad that you mentioned that you can use the flat branches for cuttings. Many times that is what you get when you order from wholesale suppliers. They work great. They just take a bit longer to reach a sellable plant. My question to you is, do you check your trees to ensure a single leader? I bought a group of clearance from a local box store and most of them had 2 leaders. That’s ok for me since I am about to strip them. Thanks for the great video. God bless! ❤
I try to prune them to single leader when I pot them up.... whether that is rooted cuttings,, 1s into 3s, or 1s into 5s. Sometimes one here or there will grow a little wonkey and it may need a little extra care.
Hi there, I am renting space out of someone elses house. Can I grow a nursery indoors in a small space and still be successful by making a decent profit?
You can! Keep the operation's expenses very low - propagate your own plants. Think about growing on shelves multiple levels high to maximize space. Sell your plants on FB marketplace, other social media, or at local farmer's market.
Do you get the problem of "wind scald" or "wind burn" in the south as we do in the north? During their dormancy we wrap our arborvitae in burlap cloth to protect them. Also, does there come a point where the "mother" trees have to be replaced? Love your channel ❤
I really don't know. They turn an ugly golden brown in winter, if that's what you mean, but I'm not sure that's caused by the wind.??? Replacing mother trees? Probably at some point. But I cut them back really hard so mu cuttings always come from new growth. I think cuttings don't work as well from older trees because the tip growth seems to be older. It just looks.... different. Older.
I only wish arborvitaes grew here I really do like them. I always watch your videos on propagating arborvitaes and other plants you just don't know when you might pick up a tip
Great video! Wondering why you cut off so much of the growth that looks so good in the ones you are going to root? Wouldn't leaving that give it a head start to looking good sooner?
It's not a particular brand that I know of. I have bought it from different sources, including amazon and harbor freight, and I haven't had trouble with any of it tearing or failing prematurely.
Hi sorry if I missed it but how long does it take to get the cutting from the size of them ones at 14:20 to the size of them at 20:00 minutes? One year? Love your videos by the way!
@@savvydirtfarmer Sounds like a fine family business. Good luck to you. I live in Northern Idaho and would love to get my son, age 38, a business he might be able to do with my help. However, I know he would have to want to do it.

Look around as you go around your area. Which do you see more of? You'll get obsessed with looking. That's probably the best way to answer the question.
Hi there. Do you have a website to purchase your green giant cuttings? I’d love to buy 10-20 of the ones right after rooting and ship to Vancouver island Canada. Let me know if that’s an option. Cheers.
I do not. When I have any available, I just make the announcement here on my UA-cam channel. That said, I don't ship into Canada. It requires paperwork and red tape I don't have. Sorry.
@ do you have any recommendations for seed sources that deliver to Canada, maybe even a specific link? I’ve been trying to source some, and am getting confused by some of the different species names out there. I don’t want to order the wrong thing.
I'm shocked that you let them grow so long in that small container, root-bound and tangled. In most growth situations heavy competition reduces growth potential.
Hey Just wanted to let you that home depot has several proven winners shrubs and southern living shrubs for a very low price. Southern Living Golden Oakland Hollies $8.74 each, proven winners Jazz Hands Loropetalum for $7.50 each, endless summer hydrangeas s $7.50 , southern living heart throb hydrangeas $7.50, first editions BananAppeal Small Anise Tree and more. What I like about Kincaid is he follows his propagated plants and gives us updates.
Yes!! It's interesting to see how they've grown... especially his privacy screen. I've learned more about plant propagation from him than anyone.

less than $.05 / plant
