Amazing information David. I had mine in pots, only about 3 feet or so. But one of them was browning and they seem to require way more water in the pot. Ended them planting them in the ground and they seem much happier.
Thank you, it is great to hear you are finding our efforts helpful. David says he has been nicely surprised about how well his plant is doing in a pot, but really (as you've noted), these are plants that really excel when they are able to thrive out in the open ground. If they are going to be in the confines of a container, it is important to use one that is as large as possible, because more soil volume means less fluctuation in soil temperatures, and less watering and fertilizer needs etc. It is a testament to its rigor of this selection that your plant survived the browning and hopefully now will continue to flourish and thrive in its new home. I can't remember if I'm the one who asked this question, but I do know it's a question I had/have and this is exactly the answer I needed. I also have the neighborhood explosion of deer.....herds of 7 or more passing through multiple times each day. So grateful to see this video pop up for me today. I bought some two years ago about 1-2 feet and haven’t seen much growth. I’m in zone 5. Any ideas? Not enough sun? Water them regularly and fertilize with a slow release granular in the spring.
That's a little strange, as you've no doubt noticed, our plants are growing beautifully! Fast, but not too fast!, if you know what we mean? Assuming you started out with well grown plants from a good reputable source, the only thing we can suggest, is that you check on the drainage (especially in late autumn, winter and early spring), Sometimes if there's poor drainage or a high water table, the roots will sit in saturated conditions and suffer damage under the ground. It depends upon the stage that you measure it at - older or younger! (i.e. 12, 15' or 20") and whether the plants were trimmed or not! Also, since this is a relatively new selection, we suspect some of this might be what they believe is an estimated size. Finally, in our data points, we try to take a conservative approach, so that's why we would rather rather err on the side of caution. And since evergreens like this live longer, are better furnished at the base, and perform better when given wider spacings, we would rather provide guidance that encourages wider spacings. We hope this helps clarify things a little better. Have you subscribed to our channel? Might these lend themselves to topiary?
That's a great idea, the finely textured foliage would be really wonderful for clipping into topiaries. We haven't done anything like that yet because one of the big advantages of this selection is that as a maturing garden plant it naturally makes a shapely, conical specimen that unlike many of the other sorts - doesn't need clipping.

The surface may look OK, but underneath the ground is soggy, and they won't like that!
If they are shady, and need more sunlight, they will often grow thin and lanky, or perhaps be one-sided. Root competition from other trees might be an issue too, this would be where the roots of any existing trees might be preventing growth. But, if that is likely, you would have discovered that at planting time.
Sorry, we can't be of more help. If these suggestions don't seem relevant, then you might consider contacting your local extension office or employing the services of a knowledgeable master gardener or garden coach. They might be able to inspect the site and diagnose the issue.
We hope this helps.

Why does your site say they get 8-10 feet wide when most other sites say junior giants only get 3-5 feet wide??
It depends upon the stage that you measure it at - older or younger! (i.e. 12, 15' or 20") and whether the plants were trimmed or not!
Also, since this is a relatively new selection, we suspect some of this might be what they believe is an estimated size. Finally, in our data points, we try to take a conservative approach, so that's why we would rather rather err on the side of caution. And since evergreens like this live longer, are better furnished at the base, and perform better when given wider spacings, we would rather provide guidance that encourages wider spacings.
We hope this helps clarify things a little better.
