  • Close range judo. When? Why? RvL
    RvL (Kenka Yotsu)
Short range judo involves a lot more unpredictability because of the lack of space and hip engagement and explosivity.
Ask yourself: Do I know this position better than my opponent?
I prefer the midrange where I can post on the inside and maintain distance. Sometimes, I get outgripped in this position and I can't do my judo in the midrange where I prefer. I can also "go for broke" in this position when I'm down by points.
My advantage is determined by my shoulder position. If my partner can trap my arm downwards, I won't have power in my attacks. Keep upright posture and stay capable of attacking the back angle. I keep my toes pointed outwards to keep the o soto gari from being as effective.
    RvR or LvL (Ai Yotsu)
Shoulder to shoulder, if the shoulder is coCut the hand, wait for the hand to come back for the lapel and give a little resistance. Then go for sode tsurikomi goshi as he comes up.of the underhook!

I love watching this stuff. I did judo at Napa Judo Club, Napa, California from 1989 to 1999. I was 13 to 23 years old. in the summer, our club and Santa Rosa would go to NJI in Colorado Springs for a week. I met lots of good people in judo. keep up the good work. My go to was sa-sai or tai-otoshi. (My daughter's UA-cam page)

So much of grappling seems to be "can I get my legs under me?"
When you can you have stability and power, when you cant you're vulnerable. If you can get your legs under the combined centre of mass for you and your opponent then you're dominant.

Great video thanks! I am a jiujitsu brown belt, in competitions people always try to grab both lapels and drag each other down with brute force, would be great if you could make a video of how to address that. Love your channel my judo has improved a lot since I start watching it. Thanks again!

Loved this video. Perhaps show each move to completion / splice in footage for people that don't know the names? Either way. Solid stuff.

Hey Shintaro, can you do a video about Aaron Wolf's grip? It's just like the one you showed, Kenka Yotsu hip to hip position, but the Tsurite grabs the back collar. He sets up Uchi Mata and Tani Otoshi with it. Thanks in advance

Hello Sensei, my name is Peter and I am building a website decided to free Judo content. I would like to know if I can have your permission to use your videos on my website while giving you full credit? I'm building this site so Judokas around the world can find an easy place to look for specific techniques and history of our Art.
