I think very clearly the upset that stands out to me is Armada over Mango at Genesis 1. Armada being doubted by all of the American Smashers, makes a massive run over DSW, M2K, Mango to make it to WSG out of basically nowhere to effectively reignite melee as a global esport. I think without Armada doing what he does you don't have the same scene that exists all around the world today. Armada showed the world that the US wasn't unbeatable and that you can come from a small scene, put work in and beat the best.
Same could be said of M2K Mango as Scar mentions, but I suppose breakouts aren’t really what they’re looking at. Mango and Armada were clearly top 2 players at their times, it was just unknown, whereas these upsets are primarily within actual skill discrepancies The set in isolation is not necessarily as large an upset since, as you mention, Armada had already silenced most of the doubters by the time he got to Mango
The fact that this set wasn't listed yet Prof vs Hbox was makes me think the people putting these things together don't really know melee history that much
The upset that should be there is Armada vs M2K at Genesis 1 (since Armada lost to Mango's main). They even mention that set two separate times in this video, which goes to show how important it was.
I was expecting to see that on here. I don't know a crazier upset than an unranked player beating a guy who dominated the scene for 2 years. Not only that but they thought it was a bo5 instead of 3 and he still got the win
@@_Majunior The main argument against Albert-Hbox is that it happened at a tournament held on monitors, prior to lag reduction codes and a broader understanding of the relevant hardware. That said, it's definitely up there - it got 2nd place (behind Lovage-Leffen) in the Melee Stats March Madness of greatest upsets
Wizzrobe 3-0ing Hbox at WTFox2 should've been in this. Wizzy was already getting some good results, but no Falcon had ever beaten Hbox. This was the era where Hbox was only losing to Fox-players and for it to be a 3-0 came seemingly out of nowhere.
@@minizimi3790 At that point it wasn't much of an upset, though you're right it was his first regional-level 1st place over Hbox. I got to go back and watch it sometime. I've often rewatched Yahoo! Rivalries grands because of Phil/HMW's hilarious commentary
You know someone has been around when they remember “Ken vs chillin: KEN DEFEATED”. I remember seeing that on DC++ My personal fav is aMSa vs M2K. I remember at the beginning of the match, Scar scoffs when asked what aMSa’s chances are, and then the first game aMSa loses badly which was expected. But then the following games aMSa somehow adjusts, keeps his composure and wins. aMSa imo is Melee’s Daigo.
I think its so cool that they ended up choosing the same set that Innuendo Studios focuses on in the “Things of Beauty” video on melee; it really is such an iconic set
Prof over Hbox is funny because Hbox upset Prof in PM earlier in the day. Prof said he knew he was beating Hbox in Melee after that loss. Agree that ranking though, Hbox in mid 2015 losing to fox did not feel like a massive upset at the time.
As someone who got into melee through the InnuendoStudios essay on the aMSa vs M2K upset, I personally think it's the goat, with a close runner up of n0ne over M2K
All three of these people are great. I've only ever had a chance to chat with Kevin back in the day. Glad to see these pillars of the community standing strong!
Great video. My favorite upset was Oscar/Leffen. I remember the end of the last game when Oscar hit a random fsmash and leffen totally gave up for the rest of the set. You could see his still getting crushed in real time. Amazing set
I remember coming back to my college from a visit home, it was a Sunday and I had forgotten my ID card so I couldn't get into my dorm. I went into the basement of the library to connect to wifi and catch the end of KoC. The Amsa M2K set was about to start. by the end of the set I was being so loud they found me in the basement and made me leave. I'll never forget the hype
I lost my fucking MIND when I saw the aMSa m2k set. And scar’s commentary made it so good. Agreed, it is THE video I show people when I show them an upset in melee
Actually one of my favorite Melee videos is called: "Smash as a spectator sport". There the guy talks about that match between M2K vs Amsa and I remember watching it back in the day... It just feels like an anime were Amsa is the protagonist, it is too good. Nice vid as always you Golden Guardians !
Mang0/Magi might not be the most iconic upset of all time, but I think there's a strong argument for it being the biggest. A previously-unranked player beating top 2 in one of his strongest matchups, with maybe the biggest "perceived" skill differential ever seen at the time. Insane
Armada vs Swedish was definitely the smallest upset in terms of player skill difference, he was top 10 in the world at the time. But purely in terms of melee history alone it is easily one of the greatest upsets of all time.
My hot take: the fizzwiggle/mang0 set should be S tier. Not because it's necessarily hype the way that n0ne/m2k was, but because it's establishing the precedent of the Slippi era: that a relative unknown can take on a top 10 player and potentially pull off an upset. People tend to forget that Melee's LAN nature made the game incredibly insular for well over a decade--places were region locked, competition was sparse if you weren't living in a major metropolitan area, and it was difficult to learn and improve without the propagation of content that YT now provides. Slippi and UnclePunch has basically upended the entire Melee paradigm. Now that people have spent their 2+ COVID years grinding on Slippi, regions are less of a thing, overall skill level has increased, and new names are up-and-coming. So yeah, fizzwiggle's win itself isn't mindblowing. But what it represents? It's in S, for sure.
I think it's too soon to tell. Mang0 is also bustering out lately due to not feeling much passion for the game. we don't ha e enough future data to tell if this is really setting a precedent or not.
I'm really surprised Leffen vs Plup Samus and Hbox vs Wizzy (Optic Arena) wasn't on here. Those were the first two that came to mind, and were each pretty big. I do love the Amsa vs M2K one though.
It's interesting to say that the Swedish v Armada upset ushered in a wave of A level players getting god tier tech skill and that the top player pool got wider because of it, when, around this same time, Hbox became the clear number 2 and then number 1 when Armada left. On the one hand, there is more depth in players with the increased tech skill and everyone is getting closer. On the other hand, the guy that couldn't jump cancel grab was number one in the world
because ken was the clear best player in the world and it wasn't debated while mang0 was coming back and doing it with a brand new character (also chillin didn't get 4 stocked in brutal fashion)
There was a lot of criminal omissions. Armada vs M2K at Genesis 1 was massive. They even mention it a couple of times in the video, that's how influential it was.
I am suffering from a severe Scar-content-deficiency. This helps

I have the same deficiency

Surprised they didn’t talk about PPU Hbox at apex. That upset was start of the Marth discussion and pivot tippers
that upset was crazy.
"He's looking clean if he's washed" is so clever and I only just now understood the joke 5 years later
Amsa is such a beast. Keeping Yoshi in the conversation from 2014 to 2022.
"His existence itself is san upset" lol
I mean, true. Yoshi is not supposed to succeed and yet now in 2022 we have aMSa as a top 5 player in the world
I think very clearly the upset that stands out to me is Armada over Mango at Genesis 1.
Armada being doubted by all of the American Smashers, makes a massive run over DSW, M2K, Mango to make it to WSG out of basically nowhere to effectively reignite melee as a global esport.

The thing about Magi's set with Mango was that it was a launch pad for their career. Magi kind of became household name after this.
