- Thank you for watching! I really appreciate it.
In this video I build an Electric Forging Press. I used Harbor Freights 5 ton electric log splitter.
I started out by removing all the pieces that I didn't need on the log splitter. Then I cut 6 by 3.3 in I-Beam into two 5ft sections and two 1ft sections. I also used 1/4in plate on the top and the bottom. I have no experience welding so I asked a friend to help me weld the frame. Kyle not only welded the frame for me but he also fixed the ignition on my Miller welder so I could finish the project.
Now that the frame is welded I figured out I wanted to mount the splitter to the frame. I used two small 1/4in plates stacked to make the bottom mount. I drilled 4 holes in it to receive the bolts sticking out of the bottom of the log splitter. Then I used 3/4in by 2in bar stock to make the top mounts for the plate to bolt to. The plate was welded onto the wedge of the log splitter then bolted to the rails on the frame.
The carriage was made from two 3in sections of the I-Beam butted up side by side then welded together. Then we welded 1/4in plate all around to make a box. I used 1.5in angle steel to make the guides. Then I used blocks of steel to make the die mounts. I welded one on the top of the frame, then bolted on top of the carriage. I use angle steel again to make the guides. I cut one side short. I used 1/4in plate as the base for the dies.
I used 16 gauge sheet steel to make slag guards.
I Painted everything with Truck Bed Liner.

Thanks for the inspiration I didn't know if that log splitter would work vertically I think that I am going to get the 12 ton shop press and attach the log splitter to it
I love this press. Not too bad for a beginners first press.
This is the biggest project I have done on this channel. I had just as much fun building this press as building a nice dagger or something. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it. Thank you.
Can it make Damascus
I haven't tried yet. I will try as soon as I get some 15 N 20 and 1095. I'll make a video too. @@mrcheese6139
Awesome video brother. Thank you.
this is the best build I've seen using the 5 ton electric log splitter .... love it, thanks for sharing
Thank you.
This is the best conversion of one of those splitters that I have seen! Good job and good ideas.
Thank you. I really appreciate it.
i just got a 5 ton to turn into a forge press. Thanks for all the insight and ideas! Great stuff!
Thank you, I’m glad it helped.
What an awesome build! Great job on the video this is top of the line of home built forge presses and I know your glad this is finally done.
Thank you . I’m super excited that it’s finally done and ready to start working.
That was a fantastic build! Thank you for sharing with us!
No problem at all. Thank you.
This is great!
Thank you.
Awesome build wish I had the skills to do that.
Thank you. I wouldn’t have been able to without the welders helping me out.
@@drewdoesart9277 Yeah, I'm halfway through a MIG class at the local college. Also working on tap and die skills.
Need a set of plans to work from. Got a Bilt 6.5 ton log splitter coming next week.
Geddon bey. Think I'll be building one of these. Great video.
Excellent idea
Thank you.
Looks good! ❤
Thanks
Awesome build 🤟
Thank you.
This is fantastic
Thank you.
Did you ever have issues with using it in rapid succession? I’ve heard some of these starter capacitors don’t charge fast enough to do rapidly.
So I haven't had that issue yet. But I also haven't really tried to go super fast. Once I press, then let go, I push down on the foot pedal right away to stop it from receding down as I reposition, then I press again. That process works really well, and haven't had any problems. I will say if had to redo this project, I would start with a 10 Ton Splitter. It works good, but I would like to move more steel per press.
I’ve been hate n on a few of these smaller capacity log splitter conversions but man I gotta say this one really does well
I’m I huge fan of modified machine builds as I also build
I’m actually look n at press frame styles today cause I’m about to process some steel I have lay n around to build me another press
Nice job sir
Thank you. If I had to do it over I would have gotten an 8 or 10 ton log splitter. But this one does work good.
@@drewdoesart9277 I did that with the second log splitter,it was the champion 7 ton model and where I thought it would be strong enough it wasn’t
3gpm just isn’t enough,I outfitted it with a 16gpm and it was fast and strong enough
So you upgraded the gear pump? @@jamesball7322
@@jamesball7322 man, you change from 3gpm to 16gpm, how many horse power of you motor?
@@jendrayani543 5hp 240v (strong enough to do the job still two years later)
Not the suggested 1.5hp per 1gpm
This is how I'm thinking of doing it. Except using my hydraulic shop press as the frame.
That’s a good idea. I like that it’s vertical and doesn’t take up too much space.
I see the hydraulic ram goes from the floor to the ceiling but would it also work going down from ceiling to floor?
Yes, that's what I wanted to do originally. But then it would have been too tall for my garage, plus I would have had to build some sort of base that would have cost more moneys. And it would have made it harder to change fluids later.
Do you have any issues with the bottom die moving not the top? Most the top moves but I like your idea with the HF press I was looking at?
The dies would move a little inside the slots. But now I put a stopper to keep them in place. Now they stay in place.
This is a pretty awesome build. You did a great job. I am also building my own press and I have everything finished but I need to make the dies to be done. I was wondering what material did you make your dies out of?
Thank you. The fullering dies base plate is 1/4 in mild steel, the round bar welded to the top is 4140. The flat dies are only mild steel for now. Until I can get some more tool steel.
How many tons will your press be?
@@drewdoesart9277 Thank you for getting back to me. I was going to use 4140 but not sure if it needs to be heat treated. I have a piece left over from a hammer I made and wanted to use that but also wanted to save it for something else. Do you think 1045 would work as good? My press will be about 29 tons. I made the frame based on the iron coal forge one. It turned out pretty good. I was very happy when I got all the hydraulic lines hooked up and ran it with no leaks. Anyway, thank you again.
@@sankojin 29 tons is Awesome! The only thing I regret is not going with a 10 or 12 ton log splitter. 29 tons should be really great. As far as the Die goes, I think heat treating it would help it to last longer without deforming. But the heat treat will get ruined anyway since the hot steel will be sitting on the dies so much anyway. I never used 1045 before. But I'm sure it'll work. Just make sure the billet you're working is nice and hot. Plus you can alway make new dies in the future.
Hey man, I love the press! I’ve built one myself but, I’m having an issue. Is there some way I could possibly message you privately to discuss?? I’d sure appreciate man, thank you!
Yeah. No problem.
Motor HP?
The motor is 1.8 HP
The music has totally distracted from this video. Lordy
Im so sorry, This was my 1st time talking in one of my videos. I did upload a version without music. That way it's easier to hear what I'm saying. Other people told me the same thing too.
Its a damn shame when the music destroys what would otherwise be a good video. I kept having to turn the volume down on the music (which was very clear) and turn it up when he was speaking, and his voice was muffled. Dont these people listen to their own damn videos???????
This is my 1st real time trying to talk in my videos. I hear you for sure. I was thinking about uploading it without music too. Thank you for being honest. I’ll definitely work on the commentary audio quality.
I went and watched it again with a different device. I totally agree with you. I’m going to reupload it without the music tonight.
@@drewdoesart9277 there is a free program called audacity that will allow you to inport audio, mess with it and then export out into whatever editor you use.
