  • Thank you for watching! I really appreciate it.
    In this video I build an Electric Forging Press. I used Harbor Freights 5 ton electric log splitter.
    I started out by removing all the pieces that I didn't need on the log splitter. Then I cut 6 by 3.3 in I-Beam into two 5ft sections and two 1ft sections. I also used 1/4in plate on the top and the bottom. I have no experience welding so I asked a friend to help me weld the frame. Kyle not only welded the frame for me but he also fixed the ignition on my Miller welder so I could finish the project.
    Now that the frame is welded I figured out I wanted to mount the splitter to the frame. I used two small 1/4in plates stacked to make the bottom mount. I drilled 4 holes in it to receive the bolts sticking out of the bottom of the log splitter. Then I used 3/4in by 2in bar stock to make the top mounts for the plate to bolt to. The plate was welded onto the wedge of the log splitter then bolted to the rails on the frame.
    The carriage was made from two 3in sections of the I-Beam butted up side by side then welded together. Then we welded 1/4in plate all around to make a box. I used 1.5in angle steel to make the guides. Then I used blocks of steel to make the die mounts. I welded one on the top of the frame, then bolted on top of the carriage. I use angle steel again to make the guides. I cut one side short. I used 1/4in plate as the base for the dies.
    I used 16 gauge sheet steel to make slag guards.
    I Painted everything with Truck Bed Liner.

    I love this press. Not too bad for a beginners first press.

    This is the biggest project I have done on this channel. I had just as much fun building this press as building a nice dagger or something. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it. Thank you.

    I’m actually look n at press frame styles today cause I’m about to process some steel I have lay n around to build me another press

    This is a pretty awesome build. You did a great job. I am also building my own press and I have everything finished but I need to make the dies to be done. I was wondering what material did you make your dies out of?

    • @drewdoesart9277
      @drewdoesart9277  Місяць тому

      Thank you. The fullering dies base plate is 1/4 in mild steel, the round bar welded to the top is 4140. The flat dies are only mild steel for now. Until I can get some more tool steel.
      How many tons will your press be?

    • @sankojin
      @sankojin 29 днів тому

      @@drewdoesart9277 Thank you for getting back to me. I was going to use 4140 but not sure if it needs to be heat treated. I have a piece left over from a hammer I made and wanted to use that but also wanted to save it for something else. Do you think 1045 would work as good? My press will be about 29 tons. I made the frame based on the iron coal forge one. It turned out pretty good. I was very happy when I got all the hydraulic lines hooked up and ran it with no leaks. Anyway, thank you again.

    • @drewdoesart9277
      @drewdoesart9277  29 днів тому

      @@sankojin 29 tons is Awesome! The only thing I regret is not going with a 10 or 12 ton log splitter. 29 tons should be really great. As far as the Die goes, I think heat treating it would help it to last longer without deforming. But the heat treat will get ruined anyway since the hot steel will be sitting on the dies so much anyway. I never used 1045 before. But I'm sure it'll work. Just make sure the billet you're working is nice and hot. Plus you can alway make new dies in the future.

    I see the hydraulic ram goes from the floor to the ceiling but would it also work going down from ceiling to floor?

    • @drewdoesart9277
      @drewdoesart9277  Місяць тому

      Yes, that's what I wanted to do originally. But then it would have been too tall for my garage, plus I would have had to build some sort of base that would have cost more moneys. And it would have made it harder to change fluids later.

    • @drewdoesart9277
      @drewdoesart9277  4 місяці тому +1

      The dies would move a little inside the slots. But now I put a stopper to keep them in place. Now they stay in place.
