I remember one time on John Robson's channel he mentioned a kid that turned up with his guitar and the request was 'teach me to play like Malmsteen'. John sent him packing quite understandably
😂👍 Yeah I'd need someone to teach me how to play Malmsteen first, then like 12 years to try and get it nailed down, before I'd even be comfortable to give the kid the Harmonic Minor Scale 😂
This was a fun and interesting discussion with a great panel - I’ve followed the Old Grey Guitarist since several years before he got on AGT . . . and nice to get better acquainted with John Robson, who I follow and occasionally watch. I've got ya mate! I'll give you the long correct version then the quick short cut at the bottom 👍 OK long version: So if you take any Major Scale. Let's say C Major (because you know that one and there's no sharps or flats) C D E F G A B C It's always the 6th note of the Scale that is the start point for your relative minor scale, it's the exact same notes in the same order, but the start point changes to the 6th note being the first note: A B C D E F G A This has a different order of intervals and results in the formula for the minor scale sound. Bonus Tip - This also means you can call C Major the Relative MAJOR of A minor 🤓👍 Here's another example Using G Major G A B C D E F# G The 6th Note is E - So The relative Minor is the E minor Scale: E F# G A B C D E Which also means that G Major is the Relative Major of E minor. The Same rule applies to Chords - C major = Aminor. G Major = Emin. Etc.. Right here's the quick short cut way to to find the relative major - min (and vice versa) in any key in 1 second! 😀 If you're dealing with a Major Scale or chord - Let's Say C again... First note is C (fret 8 on your bottom/low E string) put your pinky on that note, and align the rest of your fingers behind it with finger 3 on fret 7, finger 2 on fret 6 and finger 1 on fret 5. (The 1 finger per fret rule) Wherever finger 1 lands - That's your relative minor 😀👍 It's the same for every key. Some people prefer to think of it as just "counting 3 frets back" weirdly I count it as 4 frets because I include the fret I'm on - but that's a me problem 😂 So for another example. A Major. A = Fret 5 on E string. Chuck your pinky on fret 5, finger one should land on fret 2. Boom F#minor is your relative minor. You can also do all of the above in reverse to find your relative Majors. If you're in Gminor (Fret 3) start with finger 1 on fret 3 and wherever finger 4 lands (fret 6) That's your relative major (Bb Major). It's best you understand the long version, but there's nothing wrong with using the shortcut (imo) Hope that helps - I know it's a lot of txt here - But it's really very very very easy! 😀👍 That's why a little bit of theory goes a loooong way - One wee piece of info and we can instantly 24X our knowledge based off of the wee nuggets we already know
