- In this video I share what I've been up to in my sketchbooks recently, some of the artists and art books I've been drawn to and show you some of the paintings I've been working on...a summary of my current inspirations and fascinations.

Just want to thank you for the inspiration you give to me as well as the book recommendations. I have ordered several of the ones you've highlighted in the past and thoroughly enjoy flipping through them for ideas, composition and colors. I have taken up sketching different patterns and designs with felt tip markers in a sketchbook and it is so satisfying! Thanks again!

Hi dearest Helen ! You look so lovely ! I love your high spirit and the excitement you bring in your videos ! I enjoyed every minute ….. as always ! I am loving your latest course Magic Sketchbooks ! Like the other one from Still life to Abstracts it is really inspiring for me and I am finding my way to develop my own style ! I have finished a sketchbook which I have filled with loads of drawing in markers which I have not used for ages and I love flipping through it with all those colours ! I love the idea of using things from my home as even while doing housework I keep imagining what I could do with my colourful ornaments ! Loved your trees, such whimsy! The shapes and the rhythm are so delicious, I was especially inspired by the 'circle trees'. I might have to steal that idea and see what I can find from it for my own art.
Every time I see your sketchbooks I'm so in awe of the sheer amount you work! The edge to edge colouring in itself is impressive, but the way you think through your subjects is amazing.

I love how maximalist Klimt is, while watching this video I immediately wanted to sketch something and see how I can fill up the background. I also love your idea of folding a page back, what an incredible way to and interest and contrast. You are such a delight to watch Helen, thank you!

The Gustav Klimt book is full of such amazing vibrant work. Lovely brother buying you such a golden treasure! I really like the other two books too. Trees are wonderful to gain inspiration from - so many shapes, colours, textures, moods, organisms and life that depends on a tree. I like hearing you chuckle as you go through your books Helen. A lovely human touch in a world that is increasignly artificial and robotic. 😊
Thank you kindly. Yes my brother is very good at buying me beautiful books.. he’s a book designer and always buys me the most spectacular books! Im glad you like the laughing, I sometimes think I should edit out some of it as it may appear that I’m not taking things very seriously…but then I decide I’ve just got to show up as I am.. idiosyncrasies and all xx

Helen you have worked so hard with your sketchbooks, I have yet to finish my first sketchbook I have finished 70 pages out of 112 but it’s taken me at least 6 months. Your work is absolutely incredible, I love the vases, particularly the blue and whites as I enjoy lots of blue and whites in my home, you are a top artist I would love to see a huge book printed of your work I would be the first to purchase it. Lovely surprise to see you again! Really enjoyed seeing your art books and inspiration - especially the trees, I adore them generally, and really loved your interpretations! I was given a ticket to see Grayson Perry in Edinburgh, and knowing nothing about him, I was intrigued. Erm....he is an acquired taste, just let me say that! But it was fun to push myself out of the "norm" and into someone else's world. Great video, thanks for sharing and popping in to say hello! :)

I am entranced by the tree painting at 10:47. The background is stunning on the right page. I am assuming it was done with felt tip markers in short strokes of alternating lengths. I have tried to replicate it but I can't figure out how you got the different shades of color, I have played and figured out how to create the diversity of value but not color. How did you achieve that stunning effect of the greens, blues, purples, and yellowish-orange.? I love the power of the complementary colors but when I try I end up with either mud or very sharp edges of color, not the smooth transitions you achieved. Please advise.
Oh how lovely. Yes it’s waterbased felt-tip markers. Possibly ones that are slightly running out which makes the marks more evident. I can’t tell you the exact colours I used as it was several years ago. I build up layers of colour… one on top of the other until I get a colour I like… have fun Helen x
