- I used to be someone who would abandon a sketchbook because I didn't like what I had created. I now know that making pages I don't like is a key part of the creative process. In this video I share some thoughts about what to do when you don't like what you've made.

this is so funny I have just come to watch this AFTER I had looked at a horrible page in my sketchbook and worked out what to do on it, which worked out quite well. So yes leaving the page alone for a while is great advice. I have a beautiful brand new sketchbook, quite an expensive one that a friend bought it has beautiful handmade paper in it. I told her I didn't want to use it because I might spoil it with really bad stuff. She said Oh don't worry fill it and Ill buy you another one. Feeling so blessed.
Your friend sounds just wonderful...Fill it up is lovely advice. Thank you x
You are so right, I very often do not like what I created, and after a few days I look at it again and go: what was I thinking, this is great
Adding semitransparent paint over busy areas is a great idea for calming down parts and adding breathing room for other parts of the artwork. Thank you!
Oh that’s great, thank you so much 😊
Great video. Sometimes I just close the sketchbook and walk away for a couple of days. Sometimes I go back later and like it; sometimes I go back and just heave a very big sigh.
You are just so spot on Gail! Thank you, I think that deep sigh is universal xxx
Yes, yes, yes. My philosophy lately is, if I don't like it, keep going. I recently got some watercolor ground so I can always use that if things go really south, but I love that you pointed out that you can cover just part of the page. Also sometimes I cut up my paintings to feature good parts (not generally to a sketchbook, but same concept!)
Your talent and voice keep me checking out your channel.
Oh what a lovely thing to say. Thank you 🙏🏼
Oh hurrah for synchronicity! That is me this morning .... definitely created something I do not like in my sketchbook recently and oh, boy did I need to hear this! Thank You Helen xx❤
Good tips. I shall persist!
Yes Vivien, please do! Wishing you every success x
Great advice, Helen. I like the idea of toning areas down and photocopying bits. Your art is so amazing and unique. Thanks

Good morning, Helen….You are such an inspiration to me. I watch all your videos as they pop up, and I save most of them to refer back to. What are these journals you work in? I love when you flip through them page by page…the pages don’t seem stiff as you turn them even with all the different art supplies on them. After you finish a page, do you go over them with a last and final layer of something to protect your work? I love, love, love your art. ❤️❤️❤️
Wow thank you so much for such a lovely comment. The sketchbook I use the most is a Venezia Book from Fabriano it has paper that is nice and quite thick. I rarely put anything over the pages to finish them, sometimes I might put a tiny bit of wax over an acrylic painted page to stop it sticking but mostly I never add a final layer. I never want my sketchbook to feel too precious so I’m happy with a bit of smudging xx
How can I learn more about courses you have?
Thank you so much Tina for your interest in my online classes. I currently have three different classes available which you can read more about here:
