It's hard to listen to your continuous onslaught of ideas, because every other statement that you make, my mind keeps running down that road and expanding on what you're saying---- but then you immediately shift gears onto another direction and I lose focus on what you're saying because I'm still think through the last thought you said. lol... This is why DISCUSSION can be so much more absorbable to watch.

It must be protected.
The U.S. Constitution must be upheld by all. It must be protected like your freedom and life depends on it, because it does.
Your argument for free speech is a little convoluted and it needs to be thought through and simplified. You're saying that we must have free speech as a necessity for a functional society. Well China doesn't have free speech, yet they are progressing at an intensely accelerated rate and will likely pass the US and become the world leader in the next 30 years or so... So there must be more-- and I'd like to hear your thoughts on it after a few long discussions of deducing what it is.

Yep, it's a feedback loop.
Only the mode of expression is different. It's just thinking out loud, really. Making noises with your vocal cords in order to vocalise your thoughts. It seems so absurd that some people want to be able to control the manner in which other people use their own vocal cords. What sounds they are allowed to produce. Considering that everybody has the option of preventing these sounds from entering their ears by just not stopping to listen. Trying to stop and censor written speech is even more absurd. It is akin to calling the number on a missing person's poster and telling them that you haven't seen them and to stop bothering you already. They're all very enthusiastic victims, is what I'm saying.

There are considerable differences between free speech and thought...he just doesn't know them, because he has a very limited understanding of philosophy.
@@ivareskesner2019 This, my friend, is the most bizarre comment I have read. It has nothing to do with vocal chords, it's what is said and the political, social, philosophical and legal implications of what is said.
It's poetry: "The entirety of society depends - for it's ability to adapt to the changing horizon of the future - on the free thought of the individuals who compose it." Beautiful.
My wife is always asking me "who are you speaking to?" I almost always answer "myself". I find myself verbalizing my internal dialogue from time to time. I suppose living alone for almost twenty years is the cause.
Whenever I have a deep issue at hand with family, or in relation to my small business, I find that I must work throigh it in my head and verbalize the ideas to myself. I do this to find flaws in my approach and then I reformulate the ideas until i'm satified with my conclusion. Sometimes I do this off and on for days until I solve a problem and yes my wife and kids ask the same question. Who are you talking to?
Its not just yourself, the act of thinking about language alone compels existence itself to speak back at you. This "existence" is like a 'being' that permeates experience itself. It is the primordial consciousness, God.

I have been talking to myself my whole life as long as I can remember. There is no other voice as comforting as my own.
Brilliant. And to this end…let us speak freely and realize we are strong enough to withstand hearing things we do not like or may seem hurtful. This is the process through which we can actually learn to live together better.

Yet when anybody speaks up against Peterson on his channel they are abused and told to go away...that's not freedom of speech.
This interviewer seems to be inept. If the globalist bankers censor our speech through social media forums, then individuals will start self censoring thoughts. If you continue this for some decades, you will have a form of mind control that can only be dreamed of before technology. To put it simply.

I watched the whole interview, it was just as compelling as this clip. I try to watch all this man's videos. I never want to stop learning or bettering myself.

I am greatly thankful for him for having the courage to call out how scary all this Neo Marxist ( Woke ) garbage is.
However , I think he misses the ball with economics .
For economics , suggest listening to Michael Hudson and reading up on what Ha Joon Chang , Thomas Pitikky
and Miles Corak have to say . Yanis Varoufakis is a bit biased , but he makes some great points too .

forgive me, but it seems JP is more interested in how to make people feel better about their lives (which is not necessarily a bad thing) even if that is going to warrant him use any Idiosyncratic dogma/religious creed/culture etc as the basis of his arguments.
If he was raised a Moslem or from some other religious group, He would use the texts of those religions (regardless of their falsehood).
He "reads meaning" into religious texts (almost exclusively the Christian texts) and bases a theory on that derived meaning.
In conclusion, I think JP only sees value in those philosophical, scientific or religious ideas that can directly improve human suffering.
@@steven5054 It's not because you don't get it that it is a word salad. It is a comment on the difference between what we assume things to be and what they really are. If we tell ourselves that something is one way, but in fact it is another, we'll act upon it and the result will be more "chaos". If what we believe to be true matches the real essence of things, and our actions are in accord with it, then we can make some sense of the world, do well or even thrive.

He describes and understands the human condition as did Swift.
I'm not sure as to whether they came to different conclusions.
Swift condemned humanity simply for being human but I think that Peterson still has hope for us all.

This is now my favorite presentation on Free Speech. I've read entire books on the subject in the past; but as a rationale: why free speech is essential, nothing beats this.
Read John Milton's Areopagitica. It's technically about a free press, but the underlying theme is freedom of thought and expression of that thought.
@@stefanlaskowski6660 I can't reproduce the argument in Milton in less than 2 minutes, as I can with Peterson's argument. In the past, I tried to justify free-speech using Enlightenment ideas like fairness & justice. I assumed other people had my concepts of fairness & justice. But the right & modern left don't. I think Jordan Peterson's argument will work with everyone.
I used to quite like Christopher Hitchens talk on the subject as one if my favorite talks of all time, but while it still contains many useful and accurate well made points, there are parts of it that now make me cringe pretty hard. I'd still give it a listen though if you haven't heard it. But yeah this feels better now, and is about 1/4th the length which is more easily passed on.

What a truth Mr Peterson stated when he said that we all need to be heard. Children who grow up without opportunities to be heard can become adults with no sense of self.

OK so you think I'm wrong, explain your thoughts. I will listen. Or what I got when I said the First Amendment gives everyone a right to comment. The response I got back was (they earned there right to the First Amendment) WTF kind of return comment. How do you earn your Right to the First Amendment, written in the Constitution of a Free Country. I responded and asked tell me how you did that. No response so far. Maybe I just got them to think a little. Instead of everyone else just swearing at the commenter. There are so many on comment section that write a few words comments. That say nothing. Don't explain how they got there. Do they love having someone just text back mean words. To me it make's no sense that all they now is getting a nasty comment back, no real debate. Myself expect texters to me to explain for example why they are RIGHT and what I text, in there mind is WRONG. I will always listen. My siblings and I were brought up not being allowed to speak freely and to have to agree with lies. It is absolutely true that it is devastating and crippling.
The importance of Free Speech its not self-evident but Professor Peterson describes it in a compelling way and you can follow his logic very clearly as he speaks. I really like the fact that he uses realistic analogies like examples from his own life to illustrate his point

The whole point of thought or having a thought is to share and communicate. Imagine where we would be if inventors kept their thoughts to themselves. 🤔

I mean asking the question is part of the processes of answering it. We aren't born with all the answers to all questions and haphazardly ask ourselves things we already know...
I’m not saying we don’t need to ask ourselves questions; as a comparison it’s also, and often even more so, clarifying to say it out loud, hear the words, the answer may come to us almost instantly when we do. What I’m saying is that this was fantastically funny, and I am, as so many other times, impressed with Peterson’s ability to express himself - it’s not often he makes me laugh this much though 😆☺️
It’s fascinating…..for me it’s the same as when you forget a name or where you were on a specific date……you start searching through your mind and you’ll land on a few names or places and KNOW that they are not right and when you find the RIGHT one you KNOW it. But then that raises the question, who is looking for the information? And if you say, it’s yourself that is looking then how come you KNOW when you’ve found the right answer…….because if you KNOW the right answer you wouldn’t need to look for it. The human experience is mystifying if we give it more than a few minutes thought. Peace 🙏

@@k1_w3 yeah well, holo denial is for people with failed mental faculties, or egotists who grope blindly for anything contrary and incendiary enough to common teachings to make themselves appear to have value to themselves. If they want to practice thinking, they can try it on other 'mysteries' that haven't played out as historical catastrophes.
I'm no fan of our current government but 100% down with criminalizing that exact exercise in self-aggrandizement and/or contrarianism. Guaranteed we'll see countless Russo/Ukrainian war deniers in 30 years hungry for clout as well.
This is why I’ve always loved shows like QandA, because it allows for opposing sides to ‘engage’ with each other and try and sort out the world through dialogue.
If only people weren’t forced to the extremes of their views with all the echo chambers out there, it makes it very difficult to reconsider something which has become a sacred value to someone because everyone is CONVINCED of their opinion.
This argument was basically how Jordan became a household name internationally. When he said he opposed compelled speech, he really meant it.

They were in the motions of disciplining her for showing a Jordan Peterson clip, with the professors abusing their authority whilst comparing him to Hitler. This was hardly a private conversation between a group of friends. Academics cannot just use defamatory remarks to censor the work of other academics.

I think you summed it up pretty well in your response to Griffin, bless her opportunistic and sneaky heart - _'In order to be able to think, we have to risk being offensive'._ And we certainly have no right to inflict our sensitivities on everybody else when we can simply not engage at all. Ignore. Keep walking. Not stop and get offended. But keep walking. Or engage in a constructive manner and actually try to understand a contrary opinion. God forbid we should understand those we disagree with.

And it has nothing to do with disagreement. It has to do with a consistent effort to make caricature version straw men out of every single topic they discussed. That woman was having an argument with herself. Creating her own narratives and then trying to dismantle them. This is what prime time gaslighting looks like...And still I support her right to do so, even if I disagree with her method. We need this types of clear juxtaposition of common sense and obvious bullshit. People watched and people saw immediately through it. It was a win for common sense. The more people present such clearly manufactured objections, the louder the voice of reason will sound.

@@Doctor.T.46 I've seen him lose his temper and in the process his train of thought. And then try to recover it best he can while still trying to maintain some momentum. That sometimes may look a bit clumsy but you have to keep in mind that this is during situations where he is alone, surrounded by cameras and a crowd of frowning people with nothing but his wits to hold onto. He's performing extremely well considering the pressure he's under. That said. I can't say I've ever seen him gaslight, though. That I haven't.

The problem has become that descriptor of "evil" has been hijacked to apply such moniker to one who simply has an opposing opinion. This just speaks to how incredibly fragile a relatively small amount of the people have become. Those people have successfully infiltrated ALL of big tech, Joseph Goebbels Propaganda Media and more than just a handful of VERY large companies.

As we have been hearing for a number of years now..."Go WOKE... go broke!" is finally beginning to hit home and companies like Disney, Netflix and even Twitter, are starting to feel those societal repercussions. However, it was NOT what they were led to believe, but they stupidly viewed the Twitter Outrage Mob as real life!

When you realize that it’s not just a right but something fundamental to being human. A world where you cannot share thoughts with other human beings can be compared to living a life in stagnant pond water. Humans can’t live and thrive without it and life simply wouldn’t be able to go on. This also proves why so many companies and organizations have fallen and failed over the past few decades. Challenge every situation where you feel you’re being silenced. State your truths and the answers in your thoughts. They aren’t there for nothing. Being agreeable to falseness is far off of being virtuous, and, as I’ve seen in my own life, causes suffering for people that come after you. “Don’t rock the boat” they tell you. I say have some self respect and be someone who moves things along in this world, for yourself and for the respect of others that come after you. But hey, to comfort those who have to suffer because people before you never took action - hang in there. Be the person who creates a better world for others. You’ve made it this far because you’re capable, strong, and chosen to make a change.
And in the animal kingdom, we have to believe they do not have individual or independent thought so that we can wantonly use them for our own purposes.
Speaking of virtues, it is an act of temperance to speak the truth in the face of opposition or censorship. Its cowardice to give in, and you die inside every time you do so as its your choosing to give up in what you hold dear.

Ha! I often wish I could have had a father like Dr. Peterson! I'm not bemoaning my childhood nor would I want to change where I'm at now in life (well at least not the family I've made) but I would have loved to have been able to learn the things I've learned from him earlier in life. I spent far too long pitying my lot in life rather than making the most of it & I know now that it didn't have to be that way. I give Dr. Peterson a great deal of credit for that for helping not just me but my husband too.
Dr. Peterson speaks most persuasively to people who are ready to receive what he has to say. I tell myself that I would have developed into a different, better person if I'd had the benefit of his lectures/insights when I was younger. Well, maybe. But not necessarily. "Timing is everything" is an overstatement, but not far off the mark. There were times in my life when I wouldn't have understood Dr. Peterson, and other times when I would have ignored him. Rather than regretting the lack of Dr. Peterson in my past life, my time is better spent listening to him and promoting him every chance I get.

As a linguist, I was taught that speech is a symptom of thought. If you CAN speak it, you are able to think it. When you think it you SHOULD be able to speak it. Otherwise your thoughts are shackled to what words you can and cannot use. It becomes intellectual captivity. I'm for total language freedom.
I know how restrictions seeped in: In a theater you shouldn't be able to yell things that upset people because kids get trampled in a stampede. And online, some extremist groups were recruiting people. But online, there is no physical contact. There is only linguistic contact. Here you should be able to speak whatever you want. If you commit a crime by your communication, then the police should arrest you like with any other crime. But it has to be a law that you break not some company's terms of service.
I think there is zero need for content moderation. If I can't access and abuse your personal data, I cannot physically hurt you, no matter what mean things I say to you. If I do access your data and abuse it, that is a crime and again it's a police matter. All internet communication should be the same as if you were shouting out the window to your room. Each of us should just stick to closing our own windows or using the mute button if we don't like what you have to say.

I thought the same thing immediately. This is why people go to therapy. We have to talk about our lives and we come to our own conclusions. Peterson is saying that we have to talk to each other about our collective lives so we can come to conclusions. Apply this to what just happened with discussions surrounding masking and the vaccines. We will look back on the last 2 years with disgust.
I agree these last 2 years have fucked with people. At first is was nice to see people come together and look after each other but then after a couple months it went very nasty and ruthless towards people that did not agree with the common train of thought, it got worse and worse until i think people realised what we were desling with. The problem wasnt just the virus but the people in charge too.
What I have a problem with is people in suits assuming they have the right to control my though and behaviour. I'll die before I allow it to happen

It should be obvious and common sense for people to need freedom of speech. I don’t understand how someone could be anti free speech. You’ve lost touch with reality if you think we need less freedom to use our voices. It’s very anti-human to be against freedom of speech.
idk, censorships and information hiding are pretty commonly used everywhere. facilitating discussion are a ridiculously poor excuse for doxxing in social media, for example. bot chat spamming are another poor excuse for "free speech". restrictions of buskers (which are included as free speech) are pretty commonplace. feels like that argument is riddled with exceptions.

Bots aren't people (assuming it's an actual bot).
The handful of exceptions like these, or cp for example, are just used as a cover for silencing critical information that's damaging to the agenda of the censor, in the same way that non consensual intimacy, familial intimacy, and life of the mother are used as a cover to justify the 98-99% of completely arbitrary fetus deletions that don't remotely fit into those categories.
Folks just want to silence political or ideological opponents and facts or arguments that destroy their case, and pretend they are preventing hate or foreign interference or bots by doing so, when really they are the ones doing all of those things in support of their kwn agenda.
How about I be allowed to choose what I listen and subscribe to and you do the same (eliminating unwanted bots), we enforce the laws were they apply (cp and calls to violence including veiled ones like doxxing), and allow people to discuss whatever they want in a self organizing way?
Oh right, because the people with control over the tools want to transparently abuse their power over public discourse to manipulate the public and political outcomes while pretending to be the good guys championing communication while weeding out "hate" (ie whatever/whomever they personally hate).

But, I'm simply listing out examples where one should be against the "free speech" argument, in contrast to the main comment questioning what moral and pragmatic grounds one might have to be against "free speech". My argument is that not all acts of spreading information should be inconsequential and ignored by authorities. As you yourself have agreed with, doxxers aren't exonerated because "they're just putting the information out there". Nor are spam botters claims valid when they argue that their bots are simply extensions and amplifiers of their "free speech". Similarly, when the police removes a busker forcefully out of a public space, the police aren't necessarily violating the busker's "freedom of expression". All 3 should be obvious, moral, and pragmatic examples why one would be against "free speech".

Not sure of the definition of buskers (on the phone, will look it up later), but police breaking up protests is only valid where the protesters are being violent and/or preventing people from getting through where they need to. There definitely appears to be double standards for different political factions on how that is handled and interpreted.

6:14 a great definition for respect. Been pondering on how to break it down, and this fits.
This made me realize something, when I’m well, I don’t think in thoughts, I think in feelings. Impressions. Thinking ‘in thoughts’ that hard work, as Jordan alludes to with ‘a problem’, only really happens when I’m deeply troubled or depressed and as my goals and principles are properly ordered, I’m not sure it’s particularly helpful. That’s just me as I tend towards rumination though and it tends to prohibit action.

Always considered myself to be a lefty but I can’t believe how much I appreciate the opportunity to be able to listen to Mr. Peterson. My son has introduced me to his thought and intellectual genius. I don’t agree with everything he says but this man is so good at all he does. I’m disgusted with the treatment he takes and I have no clue why anyone would want to silence him? I know it’s just my opinion and I’m no more important than the next fella but I just appreciate my chance to be able to hear his wisdom!

There is not one single soul on this planet that doesn't have 'free speech'. Every single person is free to say whatever they want, whenever they want and to whomever they want.
It's what happens to the free-speaker AFTER they've freed their speech that differs, but they still spoke freely.
Good analogy. I would also add free thought is required for the brain to function; free speech is the collective brain of society, and is also required, for society to function.

Restricting free speech also restricts free thought. Not being able to speak about things also means that thinking about it is considered taboo as well since thought leads to speech (and speech leads to thought too).
Hearing this clear, precise explanation of how an inner dialogue works (including the explicit statement that universities are supposed to help you to develop that ability) likely did more to help me understand my own thought processes than all my time at a major university.
I’ve spent some time wondering lately if I’ve forgotten how to think, since, in an attempt to be “well-informed”, a large portion of my learning consists of watching people debate, and I’ve noticed that when I try to think on my own it’s as if two people in my head are trying to come up with arguments against each other. I hadn’t noticed that inner debate so explicitly until recently, so it’s nice to hear that that’s how thinking should work, or that it’s not just my mind mirroring what it sees as I give it too much external stimulation.
I've been feeling similar. I realized I listen and follow people, and think oh, I like them or I like what they said. But then I realized, I was not thinking. I need to think. Why? Why do I feel that way about an issue etc.
That is why it was said "no man is an island". "I might not agree with what you say but I support your right to say it". And why Christopher McCandless wrote before he died alone in the wilderness "Happiness is only real when shared". Restricting the ability to speak freely restricts the ability to solve problems and even survive. This man is a true legend for his ability to put this in words and have the courage to speak it ❤

They don't take refuge on UA-cam, and prefer to make contact with students face to face, encouraging questions and critical analysis. Peterson doesn't do that...he is dismissive of questions because he lacks the expertise. He propounds views on philosophy, science, politics medicine etc etc...none of which he has qualifications in. Simply put, he wouldn't get a job in a UK university...Great as a guest speaker but no job.

Free speech for me is vital, sometimes I go overboard into saying what I am thinking. Being from Romania, people here are a bit narrow minded and get offended fast and become aggressive , which I don't mind, I can handle them and put them in place, even if sometimes they hit me bellow the belt like pointing out my lung illness, which they think it makes me a lesser man. However, your lectures, they make sense and its mind blowing when debates get heated with 0 arguments from the opposite sides, it makes me wanna throw my monitor out the window. These videos helped me realize defending your rights of free speech and free thought is a must.
My illness almost got me killed and surviving it made me very skinny and fragile, yet my speech hasn't changed, I don't feel sorry for myself and I don't expect special treatment from others. So if I in this condition don't expect anything special from anyone, why are there so many groups that expect so much language control and demand respect and compassion while trashing and trying to subdue people that don't fully agree with them. I find this insane and I think in years from now, socializing, dating, even making a new friend will be difficult and will push people to stay behind screens where they feel safe. I miss the times when you would just meet someone that has a common hobby as you and just talk for hours without any judgments, special language or sexual orientation. I mean we have now video games, popular ones, that the developers had the urge to mention each character's sexual orientation. So we have a gay, a lesbian, etc, in every hero based shooter for example, in which it doesn't have any relevance what genitals they prefer, its just a matter of they fight good or not... People have too much free time on their hands and life is too good for them, 100 years ago, if you would have bread on the table or not was a bigger problem then what sexual orientation a fictional/virtual character has. The end! And thank you for being awesome.

I am always in awe when I listen to the depth of information and intelligence that Jordan Peterson can express.
I know it seems that way, but a lot of this knowledge is trivial derived, after a shit ton of reading, it's similar to learning writing proof, once you get the technique down, it's not really a display of inteligence, it's mostly axiomatic logic. I do believe he is somewhat intelligent.
