  • A look back at the 2004 New York City Subway Centennial which took place on October 27, 2004. We begin at the Brooklyn Bridge station where we see a vintage SMEE train leaving the Brooklyn Bridge station, preparing to pick up guests at the old City Hall station which was opened up for the occasion. Earlier a train of museum Lo-V's stopped there to pick up dignitaries including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who briefly operated the train. Next, we go upstairs to City Hall ,where guests and dignitaries are awaiting entrance to the City Hall station. This station was originally opened in 1904 and was the first station built by the Interborough Rapid Transit Co. It celebrated the first opening of the subway 100 years earlier. As we go down into the station, we see employees dressed in turn-of-the century costumes along with a barbershop quartet. We then ride the SMEE train to Grand Central Station, where the guests are let off to go to a ceremony at the Grand Central shuttle platform where Mayor Bloomberg fielded questions from reporters.
NOTE: The consist of the vintage SMEE train of the R-33's and the R-15 car was: (S) 9017-9016-6239-9206-9207 (N).

Best 100th Anniversary Ever is the New York City Subway from 1904 to 2004.

Awesome video Awesome event, it does bring back memories, I love when the trains were Express! Skipping all those local stations👍🏻 that was so annoying, pick up in every station 😒 and so time-consuming. Unfortunately, where I lived, I had to take the number 1 Broadway local 😕 but there were times it was Express 🙏🏼for whatever reason, and that was the best feeling ever!!! trying to get to Battery Park to work in the financial district. Sometimes I could take the A train, toTimes Square, 42nd street, and make some switches there, but it was not always the case, this video is great, thank you!!👍🏻

The best Subway system in the world, amazing how they built the subway in a city like New York, with so many trains and routes, absolutely remarkable. And even though the trains and the stations were very old and at one point very dirty, with GRAFFITI everywhere, including inside and out of the trains, it was still a great experience, I'm not there anymore it's been many years but I understand that the Subways and the stations have been cleaned up and newer trains purchased.

This video is very similar to my coverage of the Last Redbird Nov 2003. This period was toward the end of the plateau of good times of a refreshed transit system that took 10 to 15 years to rebuild to a state of good repair from 1982. After the storm of October 29, 2012 the system was on a noticeable decline as billions needed to be poured into repairing the damage. In 2017 frantic efforts are about to begin to stabilize the slide in service quality, but without permanent new funding arrangements, the trajectory is ever downward. Population growth and other pressures are relentless and can not be wished away with a boost of just a few hundred million in capital spending per year. We need a major cultural shift that emphasizes transit as the center of world-proven, progressive city management policies.

In hindsight Bloomberg pushed that "do more with less" mantra just a bit too much.
    Or way too much.......

The ceremony is wonderful. Your video is awful. You swing the camera and bounce the camera and bounce it and swing it at the same time. You're trying to get everything and it is annoying at best. You need some kind of "steadying" device AND better judgement in picking and choosing your shots.
